You should have rushed their line earlier with line infantry. with bayonets. that is the Russian style. :) Probably wouldn't loose as many men. Russian's line infantry suck at shooting comparing to USA. specially when comparing them to elite troops. But melee is not bad it all.

umm not really, there's many ways you can win a empire: total war battle; you can kill the general and wait a few minutes, and the game usually ends. Also, depending on the match rules, surrounding the enemy can also win you a battle and so does annihilating and killing all opposing units.

The Russians have always been masters of the "battle of attrition" technique. They often lose more men and equipment, but still maintain huge numbers so those losses mean very little. Take the battle of Kursk during WWII. Russia vs. Germany. Zhukov (the Russian commander) was able to win this slug-fest by sheerly out-massing his opponent in both men and resources. Strategy was of course involved, it just wasn't the main attribute that won Russia the day.
