When I first heard Holly do this, I was mesmerized. The song means different things to different people. No other word can describe this version by HC but she owns this, way better than Celine Dion - amazing.
I could never really appreciate Holly's voice until I saw her in a show on T.V. in Canada several years ago. The last song on the show was 'Cruising' (I think that was the title) and because I had recorded the show I repeated Cruising all the time because it's just such a good, vibey song, really suiting her voice. She had some really good musicians accompanying her. Haven't found it on youtube yet...
The movie "Bagdad Cafe" is a rare gem of a film, just like Jevetta Steele's original version of this movie soundtrack. The Holly Cole Trio does a fantastic job as well, simply different nuances.

Alessandra, o Trilly se preferisci, spero che tu possa provare quello che proverò io per il resto della mia vita. Fammi sapere se il mio odio ti farà abbastanza male!
@idhorricks yep that's what I'm saying! In fact I think anyone who sang a song Buckley sang original or cover is an imposter. That's my opinion dude so relax and enjoy Prague don't take it personally. Where's better Prague or Canada?
@nat00ben06 Are you saying that Jevette Steele is an imposter? I find statements like this incredibly vacuous...anybody who puts their heart into something is not an imposter, whether you appreciate their efforts or not.
J'ai vu Holly Cole last year in Wolfsburg - and she 's a women without illusions but full of imagination. So she is a real incarnation (? francais) of the vision she sings here so d'une manière tellement émouvante (sorry) . Je l'aime pour son authenticité! It's HER SONG! Malgré Jevetta Stone!
my dad wrote this song!!!! And the rest of bagdad cafe! And check out gospel at colonus, another musical by my dad, and mine, just put dylantelson and the first is mine
here comes the saccharine: remember hearing this in carcassonne in southern france coming from the french riviera on our way to spain with my then love. we were alone in a plaza and here was this haunting song which stayed with us the remainder of our trip. "i am calling you..................." wow, laurence
thanks for this. my cd, has holly, aaron davis,(piano) and david piltch,(bass) as doing this arrangement. recorded j/j 1991, in to. oh, cd is 'blame it on my youth', as if.
Holly Cole sings a sweet, melancholy version of this song. She doesn't 'overdo it,' sings it with enough feeling to make it bittersweet, but not saccharin sweet. Love it.
For my soul's sake, I bought it (in iTunes Store), but there's no sweet relief in this song, just the promise of it... the best promise i've ever heard!

DrumminQuinn this is pretty and not a bad version. Compared to Jeff Buckley they're all imposters. She not even close to him.

It was first recorded by Jevetta Steele, a gospel singer. Celine Dion, George Michael, and Etta James, among others, also did versions. The song was used in the movie "Bagdad Cafe" and commercials for AT&T and was written by Bob Telson.
