what do you mean 'down to personal preference' , it's a better quality mic. It's better than the inbuild mic. Has nothing to do with preference, just facts.
Just a question, can someone please answer, i have been reading alot of reviews, and people say there is a lot of noise when the 550D is joined with the Rode mic? Is this true?
As a shotun mic isn't it meant to be pointed at a subject to record? I appreciate the recording of you speaking towards the camera but I would've preferred you shoot someone speaking outdoors instead of shooting traffic and ponds
ok, and? Does this colour the sound of the mics or alter the preamp quality. Maybe it determines the quality of the internal limiter? No? right. You Fail
Hello, I'd like to know if you use some software to clean up the sound or the sound is directamnete the camera without any treatment? is because I have the same microphone and the same camera, but when recording indoors and quiet, I have not silence, but also noise and this noise is in the background when I record people talking and is very annoying.
For all DSLR users a shotgun mic is essential for filming with these cameras. I own 2 different shotgun mics for different purposes. I do have the Rode Video Mic Pro and its an amazing mic for filming talking, bands, and in places that are really loud areas. The other mic I own is a Sennheiser MKE400 and its a lot smaller then the Rode Video Mic Pro and I use the Sennheiser for skating cause that mic has more of a pop to it then a crackle(Rode Video Mic Pro) to it when it comes to skateboarding.
@palemango i definetly disagree. i thought the same as you for a while, thats it's not necessary to get a shotgun mic buy it really is. it gets rid of most background noise and makes the audio alot clearer and on top of that, most dslr mics suck anyway. no professional ive ever heard of doesn't use an additional mic, and amatuers too
Do you think this microphone would be good for recording something in a large room? I'm trying to record stand up comedy and I'm not sure if I should get a mono or stereo mic.
@KevinIso09 Your best bet if your not recording a band (which is an entire bloody complicated topic in itself) is to either try and get an audio feed from the mixing desk, as either mic will never really be as good as a mic in front of the performers face. However you might want to ask the sound guy to add in an audience mic so you can capture some of the audience laughter and clapping.
I loved your video dude, who says there aren't experts on YouTube!!! ;] I'm subscribing and I can't wait to see what else you are going to "Put Up"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
I actually like the internal mic better. yeah you get a little breeze from time to time but you can just cover the mic with a little foam and your good to go. thank you for the comparison.
Is this the Rode VideoMic or Stereo VideoMic? I'm thinking of buying the SVM but it's about £50 more than the VM and was just wondering if you've had experience with both the VM and SVM which you believe would be best for a filmmaker who is extremely fussy when it comes to the sound in my films?
Brilliant comparison and I love your channel, you're a great help!
@Madgefilmsinc3 Hey man ! High pass filter is an audio filter that allows only ''high'' frequencies to be captured,
for exemple : if the high pass filter is on 300HZ it means you ull have an attenuation on 20hz to 300hz. Its used for exemple to eliminate the POPS when you speak. High pass is the same thing as Low cut ! =)
Anybody know of another shotgun mic in this price range that is just as good? whether it be cheaper or a few dollars more, can someone name a few? aside from the new videomic pro
It's like the built in mic is so good, there's only a slight difference. Is it really worth paying $150 for just a bit of better quality. I prefer to use that $150 towards an extra lens or something more useful. Perhaps look for a better quality mic that would make a greater difference. That's just me.
Thanks for posting this. I worry about sound. I am/was thinking about getting the Rhode mic ... now I'm not so sure. The t2i/550d internal mic does a pretty good job. Certainly, the internal mic is not as good, but it would take an audiophile to notice even when compared side by side.
For all 7d and 550d owners. avoid external mics full stop use a recording device such as an edirol or zoom h2 recorder. the built in agc of the 550d and the 7d overpowers everything and in turn creates a massive hissing sound. using the magic lantern hack removes some of the hissing caused by the excess gain but from experience don't bother. my advice is invest in a audio recorder such as the zoom h2 or edirol r-09.
Cant STAND advertising...which is why I go to YouTube instead of television...now the ads are infiltrating the web....friken HATE THEM! Good review otherwise
Cool video, but I really think It would have helped if you tried recording dialog under those conditions. Many people who are considering a rode are going to be using it mainly to record dialog..
@tarrizzzzzzzzz Agreed. Premiere CS5 has great built in CC, and After Effects is pretty much the ultimate software in terms of CC. But what Magic Bullet provides are simple presets that are incredibly user friendly and easily adjustable. AE can provide stunning results (even more so than MB) but requires much more work and skill.
And I agree, the vignette is totally overdone. MB automatically applies it to many presets and is over the top unless manually toned down or removed.
I don't think the inbuilt microphone can be compared to the Rode Videomic. The quality is just so much better, clearer and more 'realistic'. The inbuilt sounds much flatter, as well as more easily picking up all that wind and ambient noise.
Did you shoot this in Southsea? Also, I want to buy a Rode Videomic, but I've heard bad things about the AGC feature on the 550D - is there a way to get around this? Also, what it the "Highpass filter"?
An open question to anyone: does anybody know if he was using a specific lens, or do you think he added the vignette in post. Because it looks really nice and I would like to know.
I heared no difference. theres still that ringing noise for both. I actually don't mind the noise, because it adds realism to the picture. it make it feel ike your there.

the rode mic is 10x better. what i want to know though is will this mic pick up lens sounds. the built in mic is picking up lens sounds when focusing and you can hear clicks and stuff in the video. can you test it with the rode mic.
Never use a Magic Bullet preset it looks unproffessional ;) (just a little Tip) And always shoot with contrast set to -2 (it gives you more dynamic range) than if you want you can bump contrast is post .
Hey Darryl. Dont quite understand mate, investing in a external mic will almost always bring better results. The in built mics on these dudes are rarely good.
nice... and liked the shots to it... but e.g. for the waves I liked the inbuild better.. besides that I think there is not much of discussion if you wanna use the inbuild or an external (RODE) mic... :)

Rode Mic is a short gun mic, should test it with a conversation.
PrinceNick87 1 year ago
the rode mic is 10x better. what i want to know though is will this mic pick up lens sounds. the built in mic is picking up lens sounds when focusing and you can hear clicks and stuff in the video. can you test it with the rode mic.

Hi, thanks for uploading this video. I heard the rode videomic combined with the t2i produces a lot of noise. Is it true?
JesseDeKoster 1 year ago
The Rode mic is a directional mic-so it picks up everything directly in front of it,and wont pick up so much from the sides and back.

Do you have a filter on the lens? If so could you tell me what filter that is? If not can you tell me how to do that with the camera. :D
Cheers

What software are you using?

you can hear the background music a lot more on the canon 550D, as well as the cars passing by. you can hear every noise around, all evenly.

Never use a Magic Bullet preset it looks unproffessional ;) (just a little Tip) And always shoot with contrast set to -2 (it gives you more dynamic range) than if you want you can bump contrast is post .

I would go for the Canon, hands down. However I suppose if you prefer a more loud and raw audio the other one will be great.
But most people, including myself, will definitely go for the Canon.

Hey Darryl. Dont quite understand mate, investing in a external mic will almost always bring better results. The in built mics on these dudes are rarely good.
dazpacket 1 year ago
I found that the In built mic is more trebley, If that is the case
gezzaky 1 year ago
nice... and liked the shots to it... but e.g. for the waves I liked the inbuild better.. besides that I think there is not much of discussion if you wanna use the inbuild or an external (RODE) mic... :)
Nice review...
