  • pavement has too much style for 140,000 views

  • boring as fuck

  • Pavement reminds me a LOT of a 90s Velvet Underground

  • @Cbclarkz yea there was actually a line about pavement from rolling stone that said they sound like a bunch of kids who listened to the velvet underground but never questioned what the black angels death song was about lol. I thought it kinda hit the nail on the head, both bands are great imo.

  • @supak108 haha wow I I had never heard that. That is a pretty damn perfect way to describe them though.

  • Una bandanga, un temango, que increible!!! como me encanta esta banda... no tiene un tema feo!!! aguante pavement desde santa cruz bolivia!!!!!! looccooooo

  • yep youre all right..this to me is one of pavements finest and the chicken ep is armwrestling slanted and enchanted for the title. it only loses by weight of numbers..4 trax vs about 11. gold gold golden sounds. so much style that its wasted on you-indeed!! oh,and they love perth!

  • los campesinos version is sweeet

  • for some reason.. first song i heard by this band. it wasn't a single or anything ( i dont know think). i need to get this luxe and reduxe

  • @hailtheheartbreakers

    You're a madman.

If I didn't have such a typical young white person appreciation for the mentally ill, I'd clobber ya.

  • @hailtheheartbreakers I am a LC fan, and let me just tell you... no. no, no, no, no.

  • @hailtheheartbreakers They're different.

  • incredible.

  • this is my favorite song by my favorite band

  • this whole EP is unbelievable,,,,,,,,

  • Be quiet the weather's on the night news.

  • "and it's war if we fail".... someone tell Israel and Palestine this... matter of fact send a memo to the whole human race.

  • That song is so, so good.

  • malkmus is a lyrical genius, rawk!!!

  • @pollard721 I agree one billion percent

  • I kind of like the los campesinos! version better, although this is very good. It must be because the compesinos version first

  • Heard the LC! cover first, but oh my god... the original is so much better

  • one of the best band of the 90's ...and today as a matter of fact

  • Los Campesinos! did a cover of this song.

  • BigMayneGregg from seven months ago: I agree with you to a massive extent. I would put 'Texas Never Whispers' very close by. I know it seems obscurist, but these are two of the best songs ever, and I really do mean that. History will be our judge! Or probably not

  • Second song at Berkeley

  • I always can't help but smile during 3:00 - 3:17

  • This is the song I listened to on the train on the way home from finishing school. It's such a good song to add to the sound track of your life. I love this song so much!

  • I am seeing them in three months! :)

  • I LOVE DIS SONG... i dont mind at all that the band is underrated, cos its more fun that way

  • sooooooooooooo muuuuuch style but its waaaaaaaaasteeeeeeeed

  • I've had this song in my head all day

  • personal favourite

  • amazing

  • Man.. so 90's...reminds me good times... i

  • "Well, I've got style

    Miles and miles

So much style that it's wasted", listened to it again and again and again, what a song, Pavement just genius can't wait to see them at Brixton Academy!

  • cant wait for pavement quarantine the past, got it reserved!

  • such a great song.ITs been my favorite for years.simple yet emotional.

  • someone else had the same experience of not being able to stop listening this song?

  • ME!

  • ME!!! TOO!!!!

  • i listened to it ten times in a row one day!

  • @lunatic19851985 Absolutely I call it like the last fifteen years of my life. Pavement. So good.

  • I don't get it, I like building a mystery by Sarah Mclachlan much better!

  • @BipolarBeatBoxer what? where did you get that from? comparing Pavement and Sara McClachlan is like comparing apples and oranges..

  • @chanceska Comparing apples and some fruit nobody's ever heard of!

  • @hpsfl as in you mean no one has ever heard of Pavement?!

  • @hpsfl I asked where he got that from because I thought him saying that he preferred some Sarah McClachlan song in the comments of a Pavement song was pretty random. I don't see why someone would compare one of her songs to this song. I feel like they are two totally different kinds of artists.

  • speaking of Sonic Youth, this was a time Pavement seemed influenced by Sonic Youth, but by Wowee and Zowee and beyond, that link was not really there

sonic youth was great in the 80s and they also had some great records in the '00s, the aughts, the zeros; and malkmus had 4 excellent records in that decade too

it's good to see the old-timers keeping on

  • who are the smiths? any song in particular that you think i should listen to? cuz there are too many

  • listen to "jeane" that song makes me poop my pants its so damn good

  • there is a light that never goes out seems to be a popular one, i like panic the best

  • The Smiths did the song How Soon Is Now, you might have heard it, check it out, they've got a few other good ones, don't know how you feel about the shoegaze genre though. But give The Queen Is Dead, Shoplifters Of The World Unite, and Please Please Please, a shot.

  • The Smiths aren't exactly shoegaze brah.

  • not exactly, no, but they had an influence on the genre. proper genre labeling for The Smiths would be like, Alt-rock/Indie-pop kinda deal.

  • @RobbingDog zactly

  • @RobbingDog yeah so what the idea is to make hits not worry about genre.

  • Empty Homes, Plastic Cones....

Malkmus' head is jut a big pot full of magnificent ideas

  • I used to listen to "Watery, Domestic" more than any other Pavement release. Don't know why, maybe 'cause it's only like 15 min. long! Only four songs, but they're all great!!

  • this might just be the most underrated song of all time

  • I notice this is to be track 2 on the new best-of compilation, right behind opener Gold Soundz. A very pleasant surprise!

  • @BIGMAYNEGREGG arrrrrrrrrrrtttttt

  • @BIGMAYNEGREGG ha except for all the other Pavement b-sides

  • @BIGMAYNEGREGG

Its really great to see the kids today appreciate artists in these many years devoid of art. Check out Deconstruction.

  • @Myhatisbertter think you for that

  • @BIGMAYNEGREGG Most underrated band of all time.

  • @Dltn97 amen to that

  • first time hearing this band...were they influenced by sonic youth? his voice reminds me alot of thurston's.

  • Yea they were, Thurston fell in love with this band.

  • Pavement were to the 90s what SY were to the 80s.

  • I like both versions. I think that Los Campesinos did a pretty good job of a cover. Made it their own in a typically los campesinos fashion and I think it works well. Pavement are one of their greatest inspirations after all.

  • i've got style...miles and miles...so much style that its wasted.

  • @mohashly

so much style that its leakiinnnnn

  • @mohashly I always thought it said 'wasting'

  • @rabrabrabbit korea, career.

  • I know Pavement I think for 5yrs, but I heard this song firstly from Los Campesinos. That was such a surprise when I realised then that is originally a pavement song. much nicer!

  • i had no idea l.s. had covered this song, i was young in the early to mid 90s (born in 85) which would explain why i hadnt heard of pavement but i liked l.s. version but I LOVE the original now that ive heard it

  • Still sounds fantastic 17 years on

  • What's a chromatic scale? It sounds pretty colorful.

  • If you're not being sarcastic, a scale using all twelve semitones (keys on a keyboard). If you are being sarcastic, I probably look like a bit of an arse now. =]

  • Chromatic is like note after note. without skipping notes. Thats the best that i can put it, i have barely any music theory knowledge by the way, ha.

  • I love this song! I didn't know it was a cover but I still love it. This EP is my favourite Ep of all time. In my oppinion it's better than S&E and ....Whatever the next one was called with "cut your hair". This is the best of both albums. They shpuld have kept recording and forgotten songs like "range life". Oh well. At least we had S&E, this and half of the next album. I won't even mention the last one since it doesn't deserve it.

  • thats not a chromatic scale..... lol

  • prove it.

  • ummm simply listen to it? if you new anything about music theory you'd realize its a major scale....

  • not chromatic, doesnt ruin, peace

  • Wow. I'm a Los Campesinos! fan, and I never knew they covered this song. As much as I like all their stuff a lot, they lost some of this song when they covered it. The nonchalant attitude that Pavement has when singing this song really makes it better. Both versions are good, but this one has more feeling.

  • all other music before and after pavement is tuning.

  • Dear God is this a great song.

  • i do like pavement. but i like los camp a lot more. obviously the original is better because they wrote it. but los camp still do it justice in my eyes

  • Everybody likes something, and some people actually want to let you know they like something. Any band that pulls influence from a group like pavement is obviously on the right track. Least they aren't doing a touch the sky cover or any other played out stuff.

  • Pavement's Watery Domestic EP is 4-song perfection, just bliss

  • What all you people who say 'LC shouldn't have covered this song!" should consider is, LC are Pavement fans, and by covering them, they are paying tribute... it is a different style, so at least they didn't just try to be Pavement.

It is very hard to play a cover better than the original. They are just interesting little extras.

  • What LC did to this song was a disgrace. This song is so essential to what Pavement represents. It is an anthem to their style. LC totally distorting and changing the song totally changes the purpose. There's a fucking reason the clincher line in this is I got style, miles and miles. No one else can imitate it, that's the fucking point. The irony is that they would choose THIS song to cover.

  • Yeah I'm sure that's the point the band was trying to communicate, just blatant, shameless self-importance like that. You know its fine to not like the cover, but don't pretend to "get" something that is really just a thinly veiled version of your own opinion.

  • tone of guitar makes me want to dance. -

"i've got style, miles and miles, so much style that it's wastinggg"

  • Wasted, not wasting.

  • Malkmus lyrics change with every rendition, esp. minor variatnts like this

  • I love this song.

  • Most tend to like which version they hear first. I prefer the Pavement version, LC shouldn't have fucked with the tempo.

  • What the hell was that about at the end???

  • idiot ^

  • one of my favorite songs ever

  • agree

  • Don't hate the LC version, it's very fun; but this is miles (and miles) ahead.

  • They're very different styles! LC's is poppy and very upbeat - this is more chillax. Neither is better than the other; it very much depends on your tastes.

Personally, I prefer LC's, but to each their own!

  • LC doesn't grasp the Pavement nonchalance and arrogant charm that you need to sing a tune like this.

  • agree with czaaaaa to an extent

  • A cover version of this song just doesn't work. This is a song that only Pavement could have written and performed. Any cover is guaranteed to be horrible.

  • Actually, you're wrong. The problem isn't that the cover is guaranteed to be horrible. The problem is that people have different tastes. There is no such thing as "to each their own" - not when the Internet is populated with close-minded idiots.

MY OPINION IS RIGHT ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH ME IS OBVIOUSLY A FAG LOL!!!

  • THEN AGAIN, this is Youtube, meaning that the chances of having some kind of intelligent discussion is nil. I don't know why I bother.

  • Maybe one day when you grow up you will realize that there is more to music than just personal taste. There IS, believe it or not, such a thing as bad music. We can, believe it or not, objectively say that this or that band or this or that song is horrible.

  • I do believe there is bad music (literature and other forms of art included.) I believe that it isn't wrong to like bad music either. But that's not my point. To say that something is guaranteed to be horrible simply because it is a cover - that is close-minded. And for the record, I do enjoy the original more now than LC's cover.

And LC is nowhere near the category of "bad music" - everything is so tongue-in-cheek about shit bands like Fall Out Boy it's amazing.

  • i think it sums up pavement: terribly melodic

the music is abrasive and grotesque, but melodic and beautiful in a strange way. the live version off of slanted is even better. LC's version of this is okay, but nothing beats the original

  • Never heard this before, weird after the LC version...I prefer LC.

  • You're on crack. The LC version sucks. Why? Only a dude with as much as "style" as Malkmus could pull off this song...

  • Both have their stuff; though I agree, LC version is funner, happier

  • Same. Why do people have to be pretentious and argue about this?

  • wow.. i just recently discovered this band on pandora.. i'm amazing <3
