We all can say what our "faves" are of David Wilcox's...but, I what I find most enduring about his talent is that he never waievers from his own genius song, and allows his audience to connect with him... what they will. THAT my friends, is a true artist! IMHO, this song...regardless of the quality of video is one of his most soulful songs. Just MY opinion, of course! Yet, the melody, the simple riffs...and, of course, the lyrics...ring true for me. Thank you, David...for "finding me here".
David Wilcox is arguably America's best singer-songwriter but deserves videos with better sound quality and camerawork. His best songs: Eye of the Hurricane; Language of the Heart; Rusty Old American Dream; Chet Baker's Unsung Swan Song (covered by KD Lang by the way); many others.
David Wilcox has great new songs on his CD "Airstream" but his YouTube presence is spotty; he needs more terrific songs with great audio quality and intelligent video. I met him in Westfield last spring at his concert and he's very approachable, funny, humble. I like Covert War but I think "High Hill" (not sure if that's the right title) is excellent, along with "Prayer", and "The Time Between the Lightning and the Thunder" (again, not sure about titles).
High Hill is excellent! Also love "Show Me", "The Time Between the Lightning and the Thunder", and others. David Wilcox's manager, Tom Simonson, promised David would have more of a YouTube presence, but I have yet to find an assortment of high quality songs on YouTube -- too bad since David's excellent music would help a new generation discover excellent songwriting, lyrics, and guitarwork.
I first found his music by accident, from a father I knew only as a stranger. Listening to a tape that he gave me, the songs of David embraced my heart and kept me warm like an old familiar blanket of love, hope.. and heartache. Definately one of the most talented musicians of our day. Thankfully, the singer who built a bridge between a boy and his dad. Thanks for sharing the song.
Each is a guitar wizard. I don't hear vocal resemblance. When David first hit the scene in the early 90's he was often compared to James Taylor and, ironically, owes his career beginnings in some ways to Livingston Taylor.
David learned to play guitar in alternative tunings, unlike most who learn in standard tuning. Hence, his incredible array of tunings, lending to the Hedges comparison, perhaps.
Well, I should have specified. Haha. I meant his guitar. The vocals obviously are completely different. And your explaination does make a lot of sense.
I saw Dave play at a gathering of friends in Warfordsburg (nowheresville), PA. He was making up songs on the fly. That's when I realized his genius...
I grew up watching Dave In Black Mountain, NC, when he was a complete "unknown". I think there were about 5 other people at that tiny bar the first time I saw him. At the time, I did not fully appreciate how spoiled & priveleged we were to be able to listen to and see him him every week. He rings just as true now as he did then. What a gift! Thanks for the vid.
It's amazing to me that there are great singer/songwriters of our time that get little attention, who will be re-discovered by the next generation for their genius = and they'll wonder why these people were not more popular in their time. Others I would include are Richard Shindell, Dave Carter, Cliff Eberhardt, John Gorka - Do your friends a favor and drag them to these people's concerts! Dar Williams was the first who snagged me - once you find the path to the good stuff, it starts finding you
David is one of the great fingerstyle guitarists and songwriters of today. His songs capture images and emotions of everyday life that touch us all. His songs bring me peace and joy.
I've been a DW junkie since the late 80's when he opened for Christine Lavin. He stole the show -- and our hearts. He is mesmerizing in concert. You will be changed listening to him. Finest album (I think) is Big Horizon. Thank you, David for bringing light to such a dark world...
Saw him in Minneapolis at the Guthrie Theatre in '92 or so. Moved to Austin in '95. His solo live shows were quite amazing. Saw him in Houston in '95, then back to the Cactus in 2000 or so. I just don't get why he hasn't been on Austin City Limits?
How he delivers such an incredible music message, intricate guitar, a life story and emotion all at once is what makes you go to another place when you listen to him. A real musical genius.
My first Wilcox listening experience was discovering this gem of a song way back in 1990. Seeing a Wilcox concert is a wonderful thing in deed. Thanks to Paula for uploading this video.
I sang this at my wedding to my bride to be in 1992. enduring and forever timely. a true underrated genius

All those songs are great, but I think Covert War is David's best.

He reminds me of Richard Thompson. Both play and sing songs that are deep with emotion. Very good !

Does anyone else sorta think his sound bears a resemblance to that of Michael Hedges??

I have loved his music for almost 20 years now...does anyone know if he battled with addiction...some of his tunes have some familiar hopelessness.

all artists suffer addiction of one kind or another.

He gave the best live show I ever saw, at the Cactus Cafe, University of Texas, in early '91.
