  • You like white top afras huh, check out my 240 gallon

  • this whole video i was singing hey there delilah then realized it was playing

  • love the names of your fish and great fish!!!

  • This makes me so happy i feel like crying!!! Boo-Hoo-Hoo Lol just thought i'd make someone laugh today!!!! LOL

  • How do you keep that thing so clean with all them little buggers in there!

  • Awesome! thanks for the tips!

  • what is the light blue with blue striped cichlid

  • what is the cichlid a 1:24

  • @Thask09 That is a cynotiliapia sp. white top hara gallireya reef

  • was that blue guy missing his tail fin, or am I blind?

  • @NorthwoodTimberwolve Nope, you are not blind, very observant, that is STUMPY, the result of one of my first attempts at stripping. I've gotten much better...no more chomped off tails. (He was perfect, I could see him coming out, I got so excited I moved and his mom clamped down on him. I thought she killed him, the tail dangled and I kept him in a separate tank in a breeder net/cage. He couldn't swim for the first week or so, then the tail dropped off and he was fine, and lived fine :)

  • i have 55gallons with 15 african cichlid(maximum size 5 inches). can i put 2 oscars(maximum size 5 inches) with african cichlids?

  • @3000carriers If my knowlege is correct Oscars are also african cichlids, but I think that 17 in a 55gl sounds a bit much.

  • @CamFeelsAlone Astronotus ocellatus are South American cichlids

As for the africans, they need to be overstocked, but you are quite correct in stating that a 55 is TOO SMALL

Africans like ROOM, and long tanks are the best. My 90 gallon is the SMALLEST tank I'd use to house mbuna.

  • @3000carriers Why on EARTH would you want to pollute an african cichlid tank with oscars?

Sorry, I'm just prejudiced. Africans are AWESOME

besides, oscars get too large and will just eat your africans.

  • where did you get the rock?

  • @jrawblue24 feller stone company, my local fish shop ordered it for me

  • Whee did you get the rocks they are awesome

  • @tobychong14 feller stone company, lace rock, local fish store ordered it for me

  • AWSOME¡¡¡¡¡¡ WHATIS THE NAME OF SONG?

  • great

  • Starting up a Cichlid tank, so far my first is a male yellow lab, a peacock and 2 other cichlids male/female

  • @Greatwhiterex Hope you have a big tank, I'd get the male lab about 5-7 more friends, they don't like to be lonely, africans are harem fish, NOT paring fish. Good luck :) send me a vid link when you get finished

  • gotta say mate thats 1 nice tank.

  • @kingpin2746 Thanks (I am female though...I am guessing i am not a "mate") LOL ;)

  • where did you get that sand from? real nice tank man

  • @MassacreSound That is pool filter sand, VERY CLEAN, right from the store ;)

  • I love african cichlids! These look so beautiful and healty.

  • @PilotJudgment Thank you :) Secrets I can share are GOOD veggie diet (Dainichi veggie delux) and occasionally NLS cichlid formula. THEY LOVE IT. And STABLE water quality and FREQUENT water changes (this tank had 60 gallons changed once or twice weekly. ALSO, you can NEVER overfilter, this tank had pond filtration on it (a nuclear 300 gallon capacity micron filtration unit was on my return line for ONE Of the filtration systems I had on here) You can NEVER overfilter, NEVER NEVER NEVER. :)

  • how do dominate female cichlids mate with a male thats not dominant can someone give me an answer i know how males dance for the females to lure them into mating but how do dominante females pick a male to mate

  • @5C7FE I have no idea, I often didn't catch them breeding, I just tried to keep 5-7 females for each male. They do NOT pair up, they are "harem" fish. Have lots of caves, mbuna are rock dwelling cichlids and must have rocks (with crevices and caves) to be happy.

  • The blue fish you have focussed on most of the film is absolutely gorgeous! lol @ the poor Demasoni =). Beautiful tank.

  • @twasbrillig33 Thanks, yeah, the poor demasoni just can't compare with the white top hara LOL

The hara are relatively peaceful and they got along with everyone in the tank. Even the demasoni :)

Actually, I didn't have trouble with my demasoni, they are really nice fish too. But the hara are my fav's :)

  • where did u get the decorations??

  • @hooverjonesTV All rock was purchased from my local fish store. With over 200 pounds (I'd guess) some was ordered from my local fish store in 50 pound boxes for me. (mostly lace rock

  • 2 questions-first what is the type of cichlid at 0:46? And where do you get them from, mail order? If so please tell the website as they are amazing, and so is your TANK!!!

  • @ffresh1 Google Dave's Rare Aquarium fish, I ordered them from him, he is AWESOME, and will help you a TON. This video was taken before I put in some bristlenose pleco's, they cleaned it up SOOO good. Dave has the best prices on plecos I have ever seen.

  • Love your fish and tank setup ,nice job

  • @DAVMAN52 Thank you!

  • Nice tank! I love the haras (have some myself). You seem to have the same problem i do with lighting spots. There are some places were your fish colors dont look right. I have the same problem going on in my tank.

  • @WhichWayIsNorth I know exactly what you mean, so annoying, the white top hara are almost white fish, and looked more bluish on film. After I got some plecos to clean my rocks (I put in some bristlenose) It brightened up substantially.

  • oh sorry i never read your info on the vid im assuming its the white top hara!

  • i love the white cichlid with stripes goin halfway down its body..what is that one called?

  • What sorta rock is that your useing !!

  • Lace rock

  • Thanks it looks 1000 times better then ocean rock!! can you tell me best place to buy this? im in the uk and dont seem to find any

  • @gary4sophiec Sorry so long to get back to you!!!! I was busy with a family member death, dog death, divorce, move, and career change. Now I'm unemployed and have a moment to reply to folks. SORRY, I'm usually not such a slacker, PROMISE,

Anyway, that is from Feller Stone Company, I am sure they probably ship worldwide. That is lace rock, I've gotten several boxes from them (my fish store would order it for me) and I've been very happy with what they ship. Hope this helps

  • @gary4sophiec Lace rock mostly

  • AWSOME!!!!

Im going to start a cichlid aquarium tomorow and this gave me lots of inspiration!

    Thanx!

  • You are welcome Markhogsvagen

Hope to see some vids of it!

  • im actually making one right now!!!

Its soon going to be up.

    I will tell u when.

  • Hey Delilah :) lol nice tank

  • Thank You

  • you always seems to amaze me with your tanks.... and taste in design of your fish tanks....

  • Thank you Larryjackson4125

  • what kind is the black with the Dark Blue Stripes?

  • I'm not sure which one you are looking at... Humm. I have no true black fish. I have some bad lighting in some of my tank (cheap lights!)

I have Pseudotropheus demasoni, they are midnight blue with lighter blue stripes. If you let me know what picture frame (what time they show up in the video) I'll try to let you know what the fish is. :) Thanks for stopping by :)

  • Pseudotropheus demasoni thats the one. I bought a few at a LFS and the guy had them mis-labeled, so i have been trying to figure out what i had bought. Thanks...

  • Demasoni

  • what kind of fish is at 0:53 ?

  • That is a male cynotilapia sp. white top hara gallireya reef.

  • super

  • Thanks borysjaworzno

    Appreciate that :)

  • hi i will be gettingmy malawis today afetr a long 4 weeks setting up and i just wondered what do oyu think of this mix and also how do you know if a female is holding>? also what temp and ph do you use???

the mix i anticipating are afra, carrelues, rd top hongi, johanni, mtericliiama grenakli or something like that!!

  • My temp is 78 F, my pH is 7.8

My GH is 6 degrees of hardness and my buffering capacity, or carbonate hardness (KH) is about 8 or 9 degrees.

  • I think your mix is fine :)

Holding females are easy to spot, they hide often in the rocks, they don't come out to eat usually, and they look like they have a mouth full of bubblegum :)

  • Where did you get to buy the rocks?

  • My local fish store has the rocks, but they didn't have enough (I needed a LOT)

so they special ordered the rock for me. Then, when my fish had lots of fry, I grew the fry up and traded them in for credit at the fish store. And I bought, you guessed it, MORE ROCK :)

  • Nice Tank ,Nice Fishes

    greetz

    Rock Area

  • Thanks for the comment Rockarea, appreaciate it :)

Hope you stop by again :)

  • Probaly one of the best mbuna tanks i've seen. well done, your fish are very healthy and look very happy.

never a dull moment in a mbuna tank.

  • Thank you very much,

Instead of a day at the spa pampering myself all the time, I like to do tank care. Nothing like a good exfoliating of hands and polishing of nails than moving rocks can sand LOL. My friends all want to know how I keep my nails in such good shape, and I recommend tank keeping to all of them. I'm sure the fish poo has something to do with it LOL.

Thanks for stopping by, appreciate it :)

  • Really nice tank. How old is Brutus, he's huge!

  • Brutus is five years old. Just a youngster for a cichlid ;)

But (hopefully) he will not get any larger.

  • ehy very nice mbuna tank, u can see my wild cynotilapia sp. hara from gallireya reef.. my set up is not as good a s yours..

    ciao!

  • Aquarium keeping is always a work in progress. I can never keep my hands out of my tanks. I'm always adding new rocks and stuff and just can't leave stuff alone. After a few years, your tanks will take on a personality of their own. they really do...

My tanks are all older tanks.

Yours will get there, over time, they will get there. :)

Thanks for stopping by, appreciate the comment :)

  • The white ones are male cynotilapia species white top hara gallireya reef.

(yes, that is their full name, say that ten times fast LOL)

And the yellows are yellow labs, or Labidochromis caeruleus.

These are both aggressive fish. They can not go in a regular tropical community tank. If I could pick the more docile of the two, well... MAYBE the yellow labs. It depends on the individual fish sometimes. Some are just more aggressive than others.

  • Nice tank its so cool :D XD

  • Well, thank you very much.

    Appreciate that :)

  • Well thank you.

    Appreciate that very much :)

  • So how much do you think you paid for all that rock?

  • Oh, gosh.. I dunno...

    Guessing $300 - $400

I ordered the first 100 pounds from my fish store, then slowly added more over the years :)

Lace rock usually runs about $3 per pound at my fish store.

But I only paid $2.00 per pound when I bought it in bulk (the first time)

  • where did you get the rock?

  • My local fish store ordered it for me. It is lace rock, from feller stone company.

  • EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL!TANK, music all what you want WONDERFULLL!!!

  • Thanks :)

    Appreciate that!

  • Beautiful Tank. Just curious what kind of rock do you have and where did you get it from. By the way what song is that.

  • That is Lace Rock. My local fish store ordered it for me.

I can't tell the song, because youtube has all these weird restrictions and stuff about music. I never know what I can and can't post, and their replacement tracks suck. sorry.

  • ur tank is a reminder of what mine should be very soon..i have a 55 gallon tank so yeah......

  • Thank you

My tank seems to be a work in progress. I never seem to leave it alone.

I'm always adding stuff etc all the time :)

  • Well keep up the good work.

  • nice tank

  • Thank you :)

    I appreciate the comment :)

  • I love all of your tanks, this is probably my favorite video of yours that I've seen though. I'm curious are you a member at cichlid-forum? :D

  • I'm a member on several fish sites.

And yes, cichlid forum is one of them :)

  • So I am going to go with a mbuna tank I think, now I know that when doing demasoni you need at least 12 for aggression sake, I was going to go for 15-20, also is it important to buy the demasoni from different sources.. to prevent inbreeding (is that even an issue for fish?) and how light in colour should a healthy fry be? (I am thinking about buying from a private breeder and I wanna know about quality?? what to look for and all that) Any help?

  • The demasoni should have bright colors. The females might be a little less colorful and a little smaller. Don't panic if you are buying adult demasoni and the mouths look rough, males have a tendency to grab each others mouths. They also pick at algae if you have any on your rocks, and it roughs the mouth area up sometimes. It makes their lips look larger, and a light color. Also check eyes, they should not bulge or be cloudy. Overall, since these fish are so easy to keep, I've not had sick ones

  • cool thanks for the tips, I have just set up my 90 gallon, Im pretty happy with it, except I need more lace rock, but it is super expensive and will have to make more money before I can fill it out at the back. I tried to model it after yours a bit and the wilddolphins too but Im afraid it pales in comparison to either of your tanks. Gotta start somewhere I guess.

  • just cycling the water right now gunna wait two weeks for perfect levels.

  • Try not to rush it. It might take longer than two weeks :)

    Have fun :)

  • I posted my Tank. check it out, and thanks for the help!

  • It looks WONDERFUL

    :)

  • Tanks are never finished. I'm always still getting stuff for mine, even years after setting them up :)

  • Hi Luvbeags, I really enjoy all of your tanks, infact it has enspired me to upgrade.... I just bought a 90 gallon and hope to have it up and running by the end of the month.. that being said I read your replys quite a bit and noticed that you recommended not to mix up mbuna's and peacocks together... just wondering why?... Fantastic tanks though really really well planed.

  • Mbuna can get something called Malawi bloat. It can be really bad and kill your whole tank. It is recommended to feed them a high fiber low protein diet, to hopefully avoid bloat. Peacocks are carnivores, and will lack color on an herbiverous diet. It is recommended they eat high protein. Also, mbuna are super aggressive, and always get to the food before the peacocks, who actually can be pretty shy for malawi cichlids. So, best to keep the separated. :)

    Hope this helps :)

    Congrats on the tank

  • alittle history perhaps..

I have 2 immature red empresses, (not sure if male or female just yet) 2 yellow labs, 1 red zebra and I never remember the name of the last one, it has horizontal black and blue stripes (similar style to a demasoni, just lines different)... I am using a argonite substrate, and I just bought some lace rock, if I had to pick a species to go with, which would do better given the pending environment?

  • I'd lose the zebra. It will breed with your lab and make ugly mutt fish. I'd load up with tons more fish.

Decide if you want peacocks or mbuna. Labs are pretty much the only mbuna that might do OK on the higher protein diet.

Malawi cichlids are not pairing fish, the male cichlids like harems. I'd start with a dozen or so of each mbuna, then when getting mature and you can tell them apart keep a male with at least 3-5 females. Even the peacocks, a male should have 3-5 (or more) females each.

  • One last question.. and maybe some more once I get started.. lol, I really like the look of the pseudo. acei, would they work out with a mbuna tank or a malowi tank?

  • acei are lake malawi mbuna cichlids, so yes they will work out. I have also heard of plenty of people having success stocking them with haps/peacocks.

    love the tank btw luvbeags

  • Thank You

    :)

  • Song is deliahla or something not so retardedly spelled

  • got a music download site or something? i want that song :)

  • Search Royalty free music on Amazon

    :)

I found this doing that search

  • Is your water brackish coz i heard you need brackish water to keep Chiclids?

  • No, there is no brackish water in Lake Malawi. As a matter of fact, the salt content of the lake is rather low. It has a pH of 7.2 to 8.4

    Not brackish at all.

And, my South American cichlids will not tolerate aquarium salt in their tanks, so I never use it. No need, these are not brackish fish :)

  • your tanks are so beautiful.... and you have so many videos of your tanks that i can hardly keep up..... haha..... very nice tank

  • Thank You Nikola :)

I actually took a LOT of videos down because I had so many up ;)

These fish have lots of babies, I think I have enough for another tank full :)

  • oh nice tank

  • Thank you :) appreaciate that.

  • what stae u live in the most of the fish excpt ele yellows are hard to find uy be very lucky if u get one in ny

  • My fish come from hobby breeders met at fish shows and online sales.

I do not purchase my fish from pet stores anymore, they do not have the quality of stock I require. :)

  • I like Very Nice Sound ;))) nice good ;))))

  • Thank You Badstorm23 :)

  • hey what song is this who plays it its the same meladi as hey there delia did they steal it? who is it

  • I have no idea about the song. I searched Amazon for "instrumental royalty free" and this song popped up so I bought it.

I guess if you want to find it go to Amazon to their MP3 section. Thats where I bought it. I thought it was OK to use because I had done a search under royalty free.

  • no problem

  • is a 20 gal or 29 gal too small for malawi cichlids?

  • It is too small for the Lake Malawi cichlids, but not too small for some

    lake tanganyika shell dwellers.

I also have some convict cichlids in my 29 gallon. They are babies but I've been assured a 29 gallon is big enough for them.

  • thanks for the info, keep posting the awsome vids!

  • beutyful malawi fish :D

i got malawi too and i just love to see beutyful malawi tanks

    like yours..!

  • Thank You :)

I'm not sure exactly how I got hooked on Malawi cichlids, but once I got into them they were very addicting.

  • lol hey there dalila

  • I hope you liked it. I want to name one of my fish after that song LOL

Problem with most of them is they look alike :)

  • Wow, just wow!

Your tank and fish are AMAZING! And hey there Dahlilah is great song ;] hahaha.

I should be getting a 75 gallon tank somewhere towards the end of June, and I'm going to be doing a Mbuna tank, i can only hope it turns out as nice as yours.

  • 75 gallons is an awesome size to start with for african cichlids. Since you are going for that size, look into the 90 gallon. It is the same footprint, just a bit taller! :)

75 gallons is PERFECT though if you are going with these types of fish. They do prefer length of the tank over height, but I have acei and they do like to swim high in the water. Most mbuna keep low and to the rocks. :)

When you are up and running, I enjoy video responses. ;)

  • grat vid good job

  • Thank you :)

    Appreciated

  • how many ADULT malawi cichlids do you suggest i put in a 55 gallon?

  • It depends on the species you pick

If you pick labs and demasoni, A GOOD looking combo, you could have about 15 demasoni and 10 or so ADULT labs.

If you are going to keep larger mbuna, like acei, You can do a group of about 5-6

If you are doing peacocks, one male and about 3-5 females.

You can not do haplochromes in a 55, they get too big and look cramped and die young in a 55 (haplochromes are open water swimmers)

Best to pick a subgroup, mbuna OR peacocks. Don't mix the two. Send a vid :)

  • Can you sell me some if you ever have fry? I am in socal.

  • Just this year I quit raising fry. SORRY :(

It just got to be too much work.

I've recently converted all my tanks to community tanks. IF fry are spit they are usually eaten. I get a survivor here and there, but nothing like I used to raise.

I'll send you a message where I got these fish, because YouTube won't allow me to post a web address in this comment section.

So, look in your online mailbox, because soon you will have mail :)

(You can see my tank renovations on my channel-fish vids)

  • Luvbeags I am always so mezmorized by your fish. They are so beautiful! You should be very proud of your tank!

  • Thank you so much!!

I hope people are watching in high quality!

    Comments always appreciated :)

    Thanks for stopping by rrcoolj354

  • I like your tank. Figured out the song too. Its an orchastra version of Hey there Delilah.

  • Thanks for watching :)

  • great job aquascaping, rock looks great. nice collection of fish too, all nice and active and looking v. healthy. nice one.

  • Thanks :)

I like your tank too. Do you have vids of the new one up yet?

  • I have the demasoni moved into my 6.5ft tank now. My order for the 10ft tank goes in this week, I'm currently running the plumbing needed through the walls for the semi automated water change system. Will post a video when its all done, about 4 or 5 weeks time. Cheers.

  • AWESOME :)

I can hardly wait. I'm very excited for you.!!!

    :)

My demasoni would think they were set free in a 6.5 ft tank. My 90 gallon, at 4 foot, seems so tiny now. But, my mbuna are happy. At least most of them stay pretty small :)

  • Beautiful tank, great music, I am strangely suddenly hungry for biscotti

  • Biscotti and coffee early in the morning

    9:00 early LOL!!!

  • Fantastic tank! i love the mix you have here. they compliment each other very well. LOVE the rockwork!

  • Thank You :)

This tank is getting an overhaul this weekend

:) We shall see if people like or dislike my changes

  • good luck, i'll check back to see the progress!

  • Awesome video! Your aquarium looks cool, very natural looking! :D Great music too! :D

  • Thanks so much for stopping by. The new fish have completely settled. Some are even "in the family way" LOL so I'll have some white top hara babies very soon :)

    (blush)

  • hey, are those yellow cichlids electric yellow labs, and a lemon cichlid. and how about those lue ones? is that elongatus?

  • This tank has Labidochromis caeruleus (yellow labs) the light blue/white ones are male cynotilapia sp. white top hara gallereya reef.

I also have Pseudotropheus demasoni and Pseudotropheus acei in there. I do not know what a lemon cichlid is (sorry) perhaps a peacock? I only own mbuna.

  • I bought my first cichlids a few weeks ago and find them entertaining to watch. Will make a video to share in the next week or two. Your fish are beautiful!!

  • Fish are VERY difficult subjects to film. Sometimes when I think I've got great footage, I notice a glare on the glass, or my reflection, or something wrong. They also NEVER hold still, hence my camera has them go in and out of focus. A lot. I try to film them when they've settled for the evening, hoping they will hold still better. :)

What types of cichlids did you get? I have another tank, as you may know, with South American Bolivian Rams. Quite the clowns they are, and very entertaining. :)

  • I got Keyhole Cichlids and Bolivian Rams. They are amusing to watch and some of the best fish I've bought in years. I have a couple of smaller Cichlids but don't know what they're called. Will have to do some Googling. As for filming, I switch off all room lighting, position camera in angle that doesn't show reflection and leave the camera to roll for 20 minutes or more. Leave the room. Sift through footage and edit out good segements. I have some great footage which I'll share soon.

  • I can hardly wait to see the new additions. Please do send a message when you have a vid of them up, sometimes I don't have time to check my subscriptions new vids. Can't wait to see the keyholes, I saw some at our local fish store and they seemed like very nice cichlids :)

  • WOW! How in the world do you get your fish to come out like that. When people come over to my house my fish just hide in all of the rocks. They never come out like that! awesome setup I still love the tank. By the way I thought you wanted to change the color of the gravel? I'm still trying to get that taste out of my mouth from that stupid sandwich, LOLOLOLOL!

  • The way I got my tank to settle and everyone to come out is by adding these great social little fish, and getting rid of my aggressive species. For a mbuna tank, most species I have (except the demasoni) are not very aggressive. And, the demasoni are only aggressive among themselves, so they don't cause much trouble in this tank unless my male population gets too high. Too many males surviving, and I just take the extras out and things settle.

  • So, now, in this tank I have

    Labidochromis caeruleus (lost count, sorry)

Pseudotropheus acei (lost count, again sorry)

    Pseudotropheus demasoni (yup, lost count)

and Cynotilapia sp. white top hara gallereya reef (I think I bought 12...I think...it was back in march I think)

I do have ONE Labeotropheus trewavasae female, Suzanne, I broke her jaw by accident when she was a baby (bag incident) and I don't think she would do good in a pet store, so I kept her. I think that is my fish stock list.

  • As far as the sandwhich, I don't ever want to do that again! I'm surprized no one met the challenge. Perhaps some more people need to get tagged. Did your tagged people make vids?

  • Ohhhhh, the gravel thing. YES, I want to change it to natural sand this summer, but our new puppy has had some issues and she has been taking all our time.

  • i noticed that the more numbers of fish you have in your tank they come out more to eat.

Luvbeags, i love the tank..i m thinking about getting more aceis...i only have 3 in my tank right now...but i m afraid that if i add 2 more...my current fish will beat up the new ones. you changing your sand anytime soon like we plan? =)

  • Yeah, I'm still going to redo this tank, but when our new puppy fell ill everything got put on the backburner. So, maybe no change soon, but you know it is always on my mind :)

Yes, good suggestion to overstock for overcoming shyness!!! My guys are surely overstocked and are NOT shy :)

  • sooooo pretty!!! So relaxing, perfect music!

  • Thanks Mindy :)

  • This is so beautiful!

    ~Tammi~

  • Thank You :)
