those r great, simple, very reliable, fun bikes..honda should make these bikes again, keeep them simple & cheap,, & not charge an arm & a leg for them, like many of the bikes being made today..a local dealer here was selling a new yamaha tw200 for over 5grand for a freaking 200cc lil bike...
I had a 1980 XL500s, and I can tell you two things to watch out for. One is that due to a bad design, the head will slowly pull off the engine, thats why they all start to leak oil from the top end. You can remove the frame to head bracket to eliminate the problem, its the only solution. Also don't do really long wheelies cause the oil pump will starve for oil . They make (or used to) a bypass oil line for this problem, get it if your gonna wheelie. Good luck.
Hey! This is a cool video. I got the same bike recently, and everything is great about it. I'm only having trouble with a STIFF STIFF clutch. Like really stiff. Are they supposed to be like that? Thanks.
Thanks for the comment. In my experience I would say no to your question about the clutch. Have you lubed the clutch cable,it could be dry or dirty. to lube the cable the easy you need a special tool made for that purpose it raps around end of the cable after you disconnect it from the clutch lever, you can buy the tool and the lube at the motorcycle shop. Or you may have a new clutch in the bike with strong springs possible a Barnett clutch kit .
I'd wheelie my XL 500 for miles, literally. Start mid-throttle in 2nd, shift VERY smoothly to 4th, all balancing. The 23" tire was perfect for lofting! The van I was driving got broadsided in an ice storm, bike flew out, trashed. Buddy Gary rebuilt it, it's still in Columbia Co. OR--somewhere.
nice :)
