Very nice, gentle training!! A Western Dressage prospect!! Please look into this new sport approved by USEF. Yes, a western horse can do dressage!!!!!!
@Equestrian08 Hi. The only real training I did for the piaffe before this was training Jackson to sit down on hay bales and then to lean back and squat a little. then we jumped right into piaffe training. Jackson had been under saddle for 3 years first, but it was mostly western training, very little dressage.
It is very difficult for a long flat neck horse with a long body to do such a difficult thing like collect tightly. your methods are gentle, clear and effective. You got him collecting his hind end, shifting his weight willingly and lightly to the haunches. I don't know how far he's come along since this video. But ideally, you want him to go forward more, into your hand and getting the front end stronger to elevate a bit more. Driving from behind and holding the front end will help.
@warmbloodjumper45 Actually, I trained Jackson to lean back using a combination of his rearing and his terre a terre. Like, before he would rear, he would back up a couple of steps and then he would lean back. The goal was to try to capture that moment before the rear. I used clicker training to get that. You can also use backing up and turning on the haunches. Message me if you have any other questions!
@warmbloodjumper45 Okay, you lost me. Train what? The piaffe? I didn't have to teach him the Ballancer (jumping back and forth), but I think it did help to teach him to lean back.
Can you train a 15 year old arabian this? It seems like i could but he is kinda stubborn, most arabians are. Is this the first time you have tried training the piaffe with him? If so do they catch on quickly?
@warmbloodjumper45 Any horse can (that is physically able) can learn to do a version of the piaffe. How bouncy, how much suspension, depends on the breed, conformation, and type of training. I would think a 15 year old arab could learn it. You have to "train it" not provoke the horse. I used clicker training during the training. I tried to click/reward for even a few good steps. I was looking for correct form and also on strengthening my horse. Any other questions? Message me!
You're doing a GREAT job with him! You can tell he gets a little frustrated at times when he's trying to figure it out, but then he keeps trying. He has a lot of heart and tries so hard to please you. What a great horse! =)
wow great training! your work has payed off, he looks like he has great talent for it. I sure wish i could teach my horses, seems sooo confusing.

Also about how long did it take you to train him that? Do you have to use the balancer method?
