  • how many years of study your an natural

  • Thank you for posting these applications of the form I am learning and doing daily.

  • Hi Mariogroup, first off you shouldn't need to defend yourself at school, talk to your teachers. Second, tai chi is a lot more use if you have some martial arts experience already. Quickest way to learn throws like these would be to join a judo class, then come to tai chi later in life with more experience. It'll be better that way - trust me. G

  • @macmus98 I absolutely agree. My BB in Judo&Hapkido, really helps taiji flow for me...and having more life and fight experience, maturity etc. enhances the mindset for arts like taiji and aikido. Now my martial expression from Muay Thai to Capoeira to Kenpo to 5 Animals to Judo etc have basically blended into a single much more efficient potent and comprehensive expression for me.Interestingly, this holistic expression makes it easier to teach and distinguish its parts separately.

  • Hi Mariogroup,

  • If I wanted to learn tai chi for defending myself at school, what form should I use?

I would prefer a kind that involves a lot of throws such as the one in the video.

If there is only one type of self defense tai chi, what is it?

  • @Mariogroup

if you like lots of throwing, yang tai chi quan

  • tai chi is very useful for those who aren't nescecarily physically strong

  • I'm not sure why some of these comments are about mixed martial arts. The guys have said at the top what the applications are! If they don't really know Tai Chi then why make silly comments about something they don't understand.

  • @TheZhongzheng Thanks. I think that it's so rare to see Tai Chi applications that people have no idea what they look like. Also, throwing somebody on the ground is going to look similar in any martial art (most of us have 2 arms and 2 legs!).

I liked the video you linked too - Wudang and Yang look different in the forms, but in application what you're doing looks very similar to my stuff - you can see it's all "tai chi". Is that you in the clip?

  • @macmus98 Yes it is. We do have an element of Yang style and also Wu style in the Chen Tin Hung version of Tai Chi. He had more than one teacher. He named the style Wudang as he believed all Tai Chi comes from Wudang mountain.

  • @TheZhongzheng Yes, I heard your hand form is from Wu, but your sword form is from Yang Ban-Hou.

  • @TheZhongzheng Yep I really don't mind where it all came from as long as it all works lol. The concepts are all the same "Tai Chi". I would prob be disappointed if was a mix with Japanese wrestling though ha ha

  • actualy it's just tai chi, if you watch the form beem done you can see the same movements been done

  • That looks like Judo style mix with Kung Fu.

Oh well, as long it's MMA, lmao!

  • Yep - Chinese MMA! :)

  • @KevinVang1000 Its Tai Chi !!!!!

  • I know it's tai chi, but it's mix with japanese wrestling...like aikido or something...

  • @KevinVang1000 Ueshiba himself went to China and learned a lot from the internal arts so therefore he was doing a mix of Tai Chi and Japanese style arts. These are all applications from the Yang form. I practice Wudang Tai Chi yet I recognise all the applications. Theres no mix here but you will find that all martial arts will have some apps similar as there are only so many ways to move. The thing with Tai Chi it is the way it is executed with Tai Chi strategies and concepts. Cheers

  • If you say it's mix with something else, then I guess it's japanese wrestling. Do you watch a lot of UFC or MMA stuff?

  • @KevinVang1000 I didn't say it was mixed with anything! It is Tai Chi only. No I don't watch UFC or MMA but I do teach Tai Chi Chuan.

  • @KevinVang1000 I had about 2 Aikido lessons 12 years ago. I guess they must have really made an impact to be cropping up in my Tai Chi now ;)

  • No idea - what do you mean?

  • I dont see it? Im traditional so am I missing anything?
