Hip Hop is a lot of things but here is a few things that it is: It is the opportunity for someone to express whatever is important to them in a musical format, it is a format that was invented to create stories that would open people's eyes to new horizons and would also educate people in area's they would have previously not been very aware of.

Whenever you listen to a song by someone such as Nas, Rakim, 2pac or Jay-Z, through the way they articulate themselves on a song it helps show what kind of a background they have. That is why a lot of the time guns and drugs are mentioned in rap because a lot of the time those are elements of the background that these artists come from. So the artists use those aspects to help with their reflection.

Besides no matter what music you listen to whether it be good or bad it is always gonna be your environment that sets out how your life is gonna go because it is what is in your environment that has the most influence on you, music can have an influence on you, but if a poor child is seeing that the only guys with nice things and money on the block are the ones who are dealing drugs or are involved in any kind of illegal activity they are gonna think that that is the only way to get money.

However all I can say is that a lot of the stuff you refer to is just a very small portion of the topics that are discussed in rap, you have to go beneath the surface of mainstream hip hop to fully capture what rap is truly about.
