  • Anything that caught public attention was a problem for Frank Zappa...it was the only way that he could catch public attention...

  • DISCO IS NOT DEAD DISCO IS LIFE

  • @ThisisAliFareedshow Disco is shit.

  • the reason FZ dosen't respond is because its a dumb ass show, these lugs don't deserve his attention!! FZ was , and will continue to be a genius

  • Fuck this "saying less is being a genius." He sounds like a boring dick

  • @pouchfreeman Yeah, because he's supposed to entertain the mindless masses... You sound like a judgmental douche bag.

  • @197Decibels If he's supposed to entertain the mindless masses, you must be in hog heaven.

  • @pouchfreeman really? That's the best you could come up with? You win pal...

  • @197Decibels Prostate cancer had the right idea.

  • @pouchfreeman now you're just grasping at straws. It's sad, but entertaining. Now I shall stop feeding the troll.

  • @197Decibels It was a pretty good straw to grasp since it put us all out of pretentious,

moronic music. You wanna empty a room? Put on Frank Zappa.

  • I honestly thought this was an SCTV sketch at first. . .

  • Best interview ever.

  • Awwww, that was precious. Thank you.

  • @grandmachristine42 Yeah you're right. It's same as the one he did with Mike Nesmith on the Monkees when they swapped places by being each other.

  • I can't tell if these comments dissing Frank are sarcastic or if you guys really think he isn't funny and a true genius.

  • @tomspin42 better than a dumb ass

  • fank zappa rules!

  • Never discuss philosophy or politics in a disco environment LOL

  • That's Grace Slick?

  • I can't BELIEVE this fucking guy. He is soooooooooo UNfuckingfunny

  • OMG, the longer it goes on the less funnier he gets... WOW, what a joker... Was it cuz he was a WOP that he got any fame? OMFG

  • WHY DO YOU PEOPLE THINK THIS GUY IS FUCKING FUNNY??? HE IS A TOTAL DOUCHEBAG. HIS MUSIC SUCKS, HIS GUITAR SUCKS, HIS BAND SUCKS AND HE'S NOT EVEN FUCKING FUNNY!!!!!!!! OMG. WHy do you morons like him? Charlie Sheen is 66666666666x funnier than him!!!

  • @StaalRulz2010 : Why we morons do like him? - He was a Dental Floss tycoon!!!

  • @MrBaebel Yup. That sounds about the type of humour that Frank would come up with and actually find funny!!! WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  • @MrBaebel : Not just that, he was a Mental Toss Flycoon too..

  • what fucking show was this for?

  • "No."

    "Could you elaborate?"

    "No."

  • the crowd isnt even paying attention, LOL!

  • I remember once reading that research had shown that when disco died all the disco fans switched over to country. I don't know it that's true, but it sure wouldn't surprise me. There's only one thing that sucks worse than disco, and that's rap. At least disco involved real musicians. RIP Frank Zappa.

  • As a journalist, this woman was ahead of her time in that she was already as self-absorbed and egotisticalas journalists are now... I think Frank, in his wisdom, may have percieved that and it could be the reason he didn't answer half the questions and made jokes out of the other ones.... Right on Frank for stifling her in your subtle way.

  • @haney72003 I thought that was Grace Slick fooling around.

  • his words destroyed the disco generation. his words destroyed the hippie generation... zappa paved the way for artists to seek out what they loved... fuck the corporate, fuck radio, and fuck mtv... he re-established the first amendment. zappa's gift to the world... say whatever the fuck you want to say...

    just say it artistically...

  • @axeofgod72 in May of 1967 my big brfothers were both students at the jesuit college Santa Clara university in ouir home town. I was in 8th grade an the airplane showed up from a gig in LA to play at Jorma kaukonens college. Grace pulled me up on stage as I was about to be crushed against the stage as she sang White rabitt and other songs from surrealistic pillow. I still would like to todate her even though she is 14 years older than me.

  • Regarding stupid questions: remember, Grace DID ask about Varese, and Frank didn't want to answer. Much as I love Frank, you could never please the guy. He always moved the goal posts on you.

  • @anitasseo--Frank was always uncomfortable with interviews (and disco environments). I remember seeing this in the eighties. Thanks for posting, that was so much fun to watch. .....DRUGS SUCK!!!!

  • Grace Slick was incredibly old, haggish and out-of-touch even back then in the Eighties!!

  • blah, music doesnt all have to be political or that, just because its simply about having fun doesnt mean its inferior

  • Comment removed

  • whats with the questions who are these people dont they have anything too say to this man dammmm.

  • Lol i'm a huge fan of both these Amazing artist's love em both(:

It does appear there's some friendly tension here but...

I Do rember Frank saying he didn't like Airplane because they used the F-Word for shocking purposes on there Volunters album or something like that but either way i'm sure in the end they both had respect for each other.

And Frank like's to poke fun at his fellow musicians to(:

  • yeah,,, i think he was maybe more comfortable with people outside of the RnR environment?... he looks in a best mood with a policeman than with all that crowd and the rocker girl. and.. i can understand that, indeed...

  • Ouch! This is so freaking trainwreckish. God bless Grace Slick, I'll love her till the end, but boy she sure was not cut out to be TV celebrity... And Frank is having none of it... Gawd, compellingly embarrassing...

  • zappa was an asshole for taking this interview. Why didnt he answer the transition from varese to rock and why.

  • A wise man once said, "never discuss philosophy or politics in a disco environment."

  • That would be GRACE SLICK doing the interview

  • Rock Palace

    February 11, 1984

  • She was pissed because she didn't get the " answers" she wanted. If you ask a silly question your going to get a silly answer.. Or nothing in Frank's case LOL. RIP FZ..

  • At 1:20-1:30...she says that she knows of only 2 rock stars that dont do drugs...Frank Zappa and Gene Simmons...just then, someone says, "Michael Jackson" and she agrees and says, "Michael Jackson? Yea...you're probably right there". My my my how time tells all.

  • boy, NO chemistry between those two.

wonder why-? they are both so cool and articulate (and opinionated).

  • i agree.... why would that be?.. maybe cause they like each other? dunno...

  • Um . . . I guess you two were wrong on that Michael Jackson observation. :-(

  • I can't tell if this interviewer thinks Frank is a dipshit or if she likes him?

  • that s grace slick....she had great admiration for Zappa....

she's always said "Frank is the most intelligent asshole in rock"

  • yeah... for some reason (the crowd and the LONG questions didn´´t help, really) Frank was uncomfortable.

  • Very entertaining! The deadpan is very strong with those two.......

  • "No. I can't be rented either." XD

  • That broad needs to be shot. I don't know how he got through that. God almighty she was HENIOUS.

  • what the fuck

  • random sigourny weaver being a bitch to a brilliant man

  • no, you suck

  • Frank Zappa was pretty cool! He kicked ass! Too few musicians immulate him today.

  • Yeah- eh's a pretty cool guy. Eh wears sunglasses inside and doesn't afraid of anything.

  • Soon they will have zoo's of smart people... I can see it.

  • Guitarstring: "Soon they will have zoo's of smart people..." If they did, they could make quite a bit of money. Since, the people paying to see them, would be stupid. Shit, look at the average consumer, stupid is an understatement.

  • Grace finally kicked everything years ago

  • Really great! Thoroughly enjoyed that. Two of my all time heroes, both with that great deadpan irony. Thanks for posting it, hazzaroonee. You've made my day1 xx

  • She just tries to handle Frank! Instead she just could have been nice!

  • I love it..."Soon they will have zoo's of smart people" LOL HE is so funny its true the numbers are getting smaller lol

  • This is about as insignificant and ridiculous as any Nardwuar interview...

  • you're an idiot. straight up. nardwuar is a cultural landmark. compared to him, your musical knowledge is about as deep as my fucking pockets. don't bother replying, because i won't look

  • frank dont have to say jack to be brilliant !!

  • I disagree with the comments about hte interview being "GREAT" !!! Duh ? Zappa is visibly bored to death and uneasy, and Grace seems no less bored by her own questions. Interviewing Zappa in the middle of all that noisy crowd is already a fatal error in itself....the whole thing is so 80s, and so wrong !! And there are so many great interviews with appa on you tube, I can easily rate this as the worst !!

  • This is a very nice interview, Grace and FZ seem to genuinely like each other. Very endearing.

  • 4:18-4:21. "I'm slipping awaaaayyyy!" Grace is so cute. :D

    I love this interview. :)

  • You guys realize this whole interview is a joke? They're both being humorous since they were friends from the sixties. Zappa and Slick are awesome.

  • @elwoodc

Really? Where did you learn that? Zappa spoke against the Jefferson Airplane's "exploitative" use of politics in their music, so it's hard to believe they were friends.

  • @eganbarry Doesn't mean he didn't like them.

  • @eganbarry They were. FZ explained he lived with the Airplane for some time. He also invited Grace Slick on stage at the Fillmore once

  • Thanks for posting! This is a great great interview.

  • hah.

    hi grace!

    i love the airplane.

  • Hahahaha. Zappa is just like "GTFO bitch."

  • your retarded thats grace slick asshole how dare you call grace a bitch and retarded

  • I didn't call her a bitch. I was trying to refer to another poster. Grace Slick was great and sexxy as hell...

  • GRACE SLICK (Great Society, Jefferson Airplane) and FRANK , BOTH WAS GREAT!

  • That bitch you refer to sang for a little group called jefferson airplane and thier lesser talented offspring jefferson starship.

  • and The Great Society

  • I love when he tells her to stop laughing LOL, he can not fucking stand her. I have the you cant do that on stage anymore vol.6 cd and he talks about her on some on stage banter. He talks about her when he rants about porno mags and the "devices" you can order.

  • He talks about women in the magzine and how they have stuff hanging between theyre legs and the color is alittle too much in the red direction, and some of them look like grace slick lol. Thats what he says on that cd, its worth picking up for the on stage banter plus the great live songs.

  • her clothing says "I've just clocked off from the day shift at the local nuclear reactor.."

their conversation says "I've had a fatal dose of gamma rays, and I've lost the will to be entertaining"....you've gotta hand it to Slick, she don't massage no egos....!

  • Some serious self massage though.. I've relaxed my shunning of her lately though. Heard her and others talk about the great society airplane and her strange trip. But I also shunned her for 'We Built This City' arguably the worst song ever. Top three. And. She agreed. I welcome her back..

Frank lol get a job getta a good getta good job and be real rich.. my name is Bobby brown...

  • so bad, it's bad.....

an attractive woman who's reasonably coherent even though she's off her pretty face........

those Edna Everedge glasses sure came in handy....

'spose a question 'bout Vittengstein's outta da qwestion...?

  • "drole, straight-faced sarcasm".....nature's way of telling you you have a penchant for words with a French derivation and.......

  • "oh the games people play......"

    the jokes on you!

  • he must fancy her, he's working hard to ignore the fact she's a drop dead gorgeous arsehole who doesn't respect prime time TV enough not to be unintelligible on it......

never trust a person that uses the word 'grim' too much

  • I hate everyone. But I love these 2 people.

  • Frank has Edna Everidge-type glasses on....

Ms. Slick and Zappa talk business amid an orgy...

  • I think he never sold himself . he stayed true to music and reality which gave him and his family and band members a lot of struggle...never believed the media and the bloody record companies only himself and what he ... this intelligent composer is sadly missed...grace go and chase another rabbit will you

  • Never sold himself?? Whatever.. Strictly Commercial. And I agree he was tough. Tough enough to get into hell. Hell? He was with Warner Bros for 8 fukin years!

  • jazz is not dead it 's just smells funny

  • praps the joke is, a woman on drugs disturbs men coz said desirable female prefers her drugs more than sex, and therefore is blind to the 'charms' of a "fun guy"....like Frank

  • Hey you must be Italian..

    Jewish?

    Love your nails..

  • showbiz kids, makin' movies of themselves...

now I know why Frank hated drugs

  • gorgeous, except she's confirming all Zappa's prejudices about drugs making you act like an arsehole

p.s. the sentence "I never hang out with rock 'n roll musicians" might be construed as your employer having an unhealthy contempt for you

  • this whole interview was uncomfortable

  • Yes,I agree with some of the comments...But by 1981, MTVkids were more into quick flash music (the ramones or Billy Idol) than respecting a rock icon, and very intelligent dame like grace. Alot of kids then barely knew the airplane , or the mothers!! Yowsa!

  • Grace mentions Shooty Babbitt at the end of the interview. He played baseball for Oakland in '81 only. Also, I've seen publicity pics in '81 with FZ wearing that same outfit. Could be '81, then...?

  • Frank and Grace are old friends from the 60's and are treating the whole interview as as a joke.

  • It's always bad when the interviewer wants the attention because then the interviewee gets a little neglected and people get an incomplete image of what he/she has to say.

And youtube should really rethink the word-limit for text-responses.

  • Some of the answers he gave were not meant to be depressing or boring, they were meant to be sarcastic. You'll notice that he gave a little grin in the end (I often do that myself - it still amazes me how seldom people actually pay attention to that part). Grace is not picking up on it which means she's either very stupid (unlikely) or not paying enough attention and being too self-absorbed.

  • Grace is fantastic, just out of place. Then again, everyone and everything is out of place next to Frank Zappa!

  • grace slick is laaaame

  • Frank with absolutely no respect for Grace what so ever and her sad attempts at trying to be coy and humorous. Then again who does respect a member of Jefferson Starship(even though they built this city... they built this city on rock and roll.)

  • Shooty Babbitt?

  • he's dead

  • Was Grace Slick reading out questions from the audience or what?!

  • you're all such nice children. insert thumb.

  • Most Riviting interveiw I've seen since Donhue Vs. O'Reiley.

  • I thought that was pretty ridiculous. Frank ignored almost all of her questions.

  • (For those who doesnt know) the interviewer is of course Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane/Starship..Frank once said ina interview that Jefferson Airplane was one of the groups that did it for the money..though he did actually record with them in 1968 for a piece called "would you like a snack? " which was never released at the time ( but is featured as a bonus track on jeffersons 'crown of creation cd and their box set )

  • She's bright, but should stay from interviewing; she's out of her depth here.

  • Why did he even agree to the interview? He's such a sour puss here.

  • he probably did it so they would plug his album.

  • Fuck you.

  • Well, that's certainly a grown-up thing to write. What are you, 10 years old?

  • who is this biznatch?

  • Listen to your uncle Frank kids and say no to drugs or you will end up sounding like a mush-brained mtv vj like poor Grace Slick!

And do not discuss religion, philosophy and politics in America as it has become the very disco environment the few of us with a brain have always feared and tried to warn you all about. But did you listen to us? No you didn't. Just like you don't listen to us now.

  • I have a live zappa cd where he talks about her in a little monolouge about sex and women with loose vaginas. I'm sure he was right about what he said about her.

  • Wow, that was Grace Slick? The 6 minutes was worth it just for his disco comment.

  • a terrible interview...but Grace definetly liked Frank. She's trying to keep up, but the questions suck...She once called him " a brilliant man, the most intelligent asshole in rock"

  • Painful.

  • This is from a local video show in Los Angeles called G

Goodnight LA. They used to play pretty cool videos on

Friday night in the early '80's.

  • Grace Slick was TERRIBLE! What a waste of Frank's time.

  • that's Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane. Desperately tries to look clever.
