Yes I do hold my paddle "backward" it always made sense to me to be able to reach the water as far as possible, therefore holding the paddle with the tip of the paddle on the bottom aloud me to do that. As I understand now, some paddle manufacturer are looking at reversing their paddle to have the tip down. In any case it works for me.
fair enough, must put some torque on you're wrists though

It is on Oahu, and it is exposed to the tradewinds, so we got lucky and when the wind is down it can be pretty good.
