Awww I disagree--Sir John Gielgud is the best imaginable Tiresias, and has astounding presence in this scene. And yes, he has big speeches, but that was the Greek way; they spoke all the action of the play. And what a great cast; even the chorus has some luminaries!

Eurydice: "We are bred to stoicism (!!) in this family." A few centuries off there. Wonderful acting, but what an annoying, clichéd, inaccurate, self-important, zeitgeisty, pathetic translation.
The Hobbes touch, substituting 'City' for 'State' with Creon is done rather well, but the Anglicizing does pervert the play with a hackneyed tones (especially the choruses!).
I for one find this to be an excellent modernisation of the original text. The translator and director have worked well to preserve the original intent and themes of the play, but have taken sufficient licence with certain specifics to ensure that a modern audience can still relate to the content.
Your improper use of the term 'zeitgeist' (among other things) forces me to question your qualifications as a theatre critic. In the future, keep your pretentious blatherings to yourself.
Not knowing any better work I like this one just fine.
I love the character of Creon, how he evolved through the three plays from honest aide to Oedypus in Oedypus Rex to agent of Thebes in Oedypus in Colonnos to totalitarian king in this play. The scene with Tiresias is a masterpiece. These are GREAT actors.
Well it was intended on being a more modernized film. There are more translations to this story that try to be modernized to help the person understand. If you don't like this translation, then don't watch it. Dur...
obyosly creon did not learn from mistake of oedipus... he didn't believed what Teresisas and look at him... poor fool Ceron following damed path of odeipus... go U!

Creon changed his mind about the law out of fear of what the blind prophet said. That doesn't sound like a tragic hero to me.
