It looks like both the hippos stopped temorarily, and the one that was winning, was already winning to start with. I'm kind of surprised that hippos fight like this. With most animals similar to hippos, when one backs down, it's considered a victory, and the loser leaves to either find a new place to live or die from it's wounds.
