I totally agree with you, the makers of final fantasy do over complicate an already complicated battle system. I've played 10 final fantasy games (blue dragon and lost odyssey included because the guy who created these two game is the same guy who created the final fantasy series, and it's all final fantasy to me) but after playing lost odyssey and seing how redicilously over complicated the battle system is, my days of playing final fantasy games are officially over.
37 dollars? could thing i decided to press my luck and wait for final fantasy the complete collection i got it new 29.99 (plus tax) so ya its quite interesting..and honestly i do find the moon phase a little more interesting to keep me thinking...and thank you for using persona has an example for a great RPg that made my day but with newer final fantasys i do agree with you about it
I would just like to say that before accusing the newer Final Fantasy's of "messing with things that don't need to mess with" that you check out Final Fantasy 2, where even before the RPG standards had been set Square Enix completely changed the development system. Even FF4's ATB system which defined the genre and became a staple was a result of them messing with the gameplay. It's what they do and what sets the franchise apart from the masses.
"Final Fantasy needs to learn from thier examples on how to make a good role playing game" you clearly shouldnt be reviewing RPGs after making a comment like that
the gimmicks give the games the feel of being different, I love the different FF "gimmicks" like the sphere grid or the GF system in FFVIII. I'm playing FFIV: Complete Collection on the PSP and have'nt finished FFIV yet so I don't know about the moon phases thing yet but it seems cool. it's a way to make it more challenging and makes you think more strategic it seems.
this moon bullshit is probably the most annoying thing i've heard of... its a free buff for you and monsters if this were any other game than ff4 I wouldnt complain but since it is ff4 im gonna complain this game's monsters are strong enough that when i get a random encounter i always plan on being wiped out especially at the end of ff4 on the moon, fucking behemoths...
you know adding something different to a new ff game is not some gimmick, it makes it have a distinct feel ff 12 is one of greatest FF games it introduces the player to real-time battle in other ff games are turn-based or active time battle, so that FF is been around for so long because each game is unique in their own way, plus a game being easy where's the fun in that !
Maybe the reason this game is so hard is because they assume your ready for a great challenge after playing the original FF4. I always like when games do this because really, would you buy this game if you haven't beaten the original FF4 and mastered the battle system?
@abser703 i have to fully agree with you here, ff ii is a great game and not one that you just walk right through to the end without grinding out some lvl's and loot, hell you could be killed before reaching the mist village!
this is not a "sit back and enjoy a great story" game, you have to earn the great story! i cant even remember how long it took me to beat rubicante but i had no internet in the 90's so i had to grind it out the old fashion'd way! ff ii and iii were the 7 10 12 of the 90's!
You spent the first minute whining like a woman about your beef with the FF series.
Then you complain about how the game expects you to know the characters already.
You don't seem to get that this game's intention was to serve fans of the original game, thats why the graphics are 16 bit, and thats why you are supposed to remember the characters. This game clearly wasn't for you, if you're going to moan about not remembering the characters. :\
This is the first review I've watched from you and you're pretty good. I disagree about the "gimmick" stuff though. The FF4: AY gimmick sounds horrible, but the FFXII wasn't really as much as a gimmick as a completely different final fantasy.
The band system reminds me a lot of chrono trigger's tech system. and yes the reviewer needs to slow down. your trying to cram too much into a 5 min review.the cap on youtube is 10 min you know. >.>

Fusing personae is a complicated task, albeit a welcomed one, that I rushed into haphazardly. It's initially confusing and as I stated before, randomly fusing personae without paying attention to their strengths and weaknesses can be your downfall. I eventually became accustomed to the intricate (and random) method that abilities were passed to personae but experiencing for the first time is quite overwhelming.
Walk around aimlessly with a random persona equipped without paying attention to its strengths and weaknesses and then you're suddenly dead in the next battle. The monster designs make it difficult to tell what kind of element an enemy is aligned to, further increasing the frustration of having your ass handed to by a ridiculous egg/mask/hand enemy that seems to have no reason to be using an Agi spell. It's all guesswork and experimentation.
The license board system was a mishap on Square's part yet I never found it to be too limiting as I usually had enough LP to unlock new things when I obtained them. P4 seems to be guilty of what you complain FF of doing as well. P4's battle system isn't entirely traditional and in quite a few senses complicated. It makes use of a wonderful “One More” system that encourages weakness exploitation that can make it simple to decimate enemies in an entire turn...but that applies to enemies as well.
The sphere grid from FFX gives players one of the most flexible character growth systems I've ever seen. You can rear a character to learn whatever attributes or abilities that you please. Hardcore fans can potentially clear the entire sphere grid and max out each character with all the abilities, spells, and stats. I personally found it rather enjoying searching through the maze like grid and deciding which direction to take my characters in.
Wiiviewr, you make a fairly pathetic argument for your feelings about Final Fantasy. JRPGs have been widely criticized for being stagnant and unoriginal over the years. A simple set of attack, magic, item, defend commands just seem to draw contention now. As for how characters increase their attributes, it's true that there is no point to change how it's traditionally done, but I feel that they are welcome changes. When exploited properly, they add quite a bit of depth to the game.
this game is so unbelievably hard and can take you a full year to completely beat, no joke getting everyone to lvl 99 and all the band would take forever its a nice story but constant battles that are constant possibility of death makes it unfun at some points, plus starting over every single story is terrible. they could have made it a little easier seeing how it can take forever to level up and even when your lvl 99 its still hard
i don't n\know what you guys are talking about i fucking loved final fantasy 12 and ive beatin it 2 times! 380 hours of my life as a child were some of the best times of my life.
@opti95 Finally, someone who doesn't bash FF12 to dust. Though I do find the story a bit lacking at parts, it's stil an awesome game. But, It would be fun if a new FF would be like the old ones: random battles, enticing story etc. but with amazing graphics.
And I don't understand his problem with FF10's sphere-system. I liked it.
@MirageVelondor yeah people like him get in thee little comfort zones with in themselves to where any new idea is felt like a threat. makes sure you don't get stuck in a comfort zone man, it makes you closed minded and hostile to any kind of creativity.
@opti95 Indeed. Not that all the ideas they implemented were great, but it does show they are willing to try something new and break some boundaries. It shows creativity and the dare to take risks. And without those risks, Final Fantasy wouldn't exist at all.
I like the fact that they all are different. Otherwise it would all be just the same game but with a different number.
@MirageVelondor wow i'm impressed, i haven't heard logic like that in a while, people can be so unrationable, but you can't blame them, since this world is full of chaos and confusion.
well I actually like FFXII I think it was a great game, nice story, amazing graphics and the battle system is perfect if spend some time learning it... I didn't liked the licenses either, but they give you a lot of LP so I didn't had to worry about that, and the gambits were a great deal so you don't have to stop every second to use a potion or a combination of magic.
fuck downloads, please release the game as a true sequel on ds3 and screw this charging for episodes crap, a story like ff 4 deserves to be played as a stand alone title and not broken down to make square more green. otherwise i'll just play ff4 gba which has a wealth of character add ons in the bonus dungeon to add to the ff 4 story without charging for them, and this phases of the moon crap why fix what wasn't broken.
@hckia i'm just old fashioned that way i guess, i like the games i play to preferably be cartridge based as they are less likely to suffer from scratches like cd and to be sold as a whole complete story, even if it were a download so i don't have to get through part of the game and have to wait for more chapters to be available but if it was for sale on a system like ds or psp i would get it in a heartbeat as ff 4 is a truly amazing story.
I really enjoyed this game, although admittedly, I am a FFIV fanboy. My only complaints were the battle encounter rate (which was insane) and the price tag. Other than that, it was really fun playing through a fresh adventure with the likes of Cecil and Rydia again. Most of the new characters were interesting as well. The story was very engaging with an epic finale. Solid, solid game.
@poshko41 I did too, I enjoyed it more than ff13 even.. I played through it twice, the second time completing all the challenge dungeons and getting most of the tails (missed like 2 of them) I beat omega and the other hard optional boss (omega being the hardest). This game is tough though, and I played it with ATB on, and the battle speed at the fastest.
of course you suppost too know who the charcaters are duh , why play a sequel if you dont know crap about what happen on the prequel really, this review guy suck.
I don't know if I'm up for a FF game. I started X and XII and I'm yet to finish them. The only FF game I ever finished was FF8. RPGs are so time consuming.
ok the moon cycles are annoying but the "gimmicks" you mentioned in FF10 and FF12 are just their own leveling system
the sphere grid was great, especially when you got into the phase where you re-edited each node. And the license board is just another way of leveling... how can you complain about needing licences to equip stuff when EVERY FF game puts limits on who can equip what
my main problem with FF4 is that its way to simple, no interesting leveling mechanics, you just level up
I'm still willing to play Final Fantasy if only to find the Diamonds in the mud of these terrible games. I enjoyed FF13 but it had no replay value, and I kinda liked it when everyone had a personality, or in the case of FF1 you could just make one up for the team.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, I was liking your review until you took a swing at 10. I agree, the new Final fantasies have lost their magic, but I believed that crap started after 10.
I do actually like the new Final Fantasy games. I will admit a lot of them do focus on graphics, in an attempt to help not only accentuate the story, but also make the game more entertaining overall. That's what games are for aren't they, entertainment? If anyone says they like the older FF games only, most of their shaded opinion is based on nostalgia of "better times". I do realize people do have honest opinions and actually like the games for the games, and not just for the memories they had.
@JeremyMcElhone Not really. 7 was my first back in the year 2000 (my fav. year ever), and I did not like the sci-fi thing. Since then 2 (the real 2, Firion, Guy, etc), has become my fav. 10 had a great leveling system (unlike the needlessly complex 8 junk), but it is still to modern for my taste.
Of course, maybe this is because I'm a Dragon Quest nut.
@redneckpride4ever I also like Dragon Quest, but I can't stand Final Fantasy 2. It's leveling system is similar to communism in that it is a great idea, but when anyone tries it, it never works out.
@JeremyMcElhone Dude, I don't even know why I'm an FF2 nut. Probably the music and the concept of recovering a lost kingdom. The leveling system sucks, but the game just has a certain "feel"...maybe it was because I was baked when I first played it.
@saddq1 Yeah, full governmental power and refusal to allow people to celebrate religious holidays is great. Life is about INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY, not "greater good". Myself is my #1 priority- once I can take care of myself, I can them help others.
@redneckpride4ever you didn't level in 8 because you just need magic after the first 30 mins or so levels didn't matter at all and that's why it sucked, there wasn't anything in 8 that i really liked at all
I played ff12 and I personally thought it was boaring
the graphics were amazing and decent story but the gameplay was weird and didn't impress me. I'm not saying it was a bad game but it didn't appeal to me
the sphere grid was ok, i didn't like it and felt that it made it less of an rpg. everything (except the characters) were good. i liked ffxii though, mainly for the story. i especially loved it because there was no love story.
Fair Review to be honest. I personally like the moon system. I dont think it was a stupid idea at all. Is the game hard? Sure, but not THAT hard to be honest. Just got to play it smart. And, if you dont know who these people are from FFIV then go play the DS version while you have time. Personally, this the best FF that has come out since FFIX. (This is coming from a guy who has beat every FF besides XI due to it being online and XII because it flat out sucked.)
wiiviewr I seriously doubt you've fully played. Final Fantasy X or completed the game if you had. Then you wouldn't have put X in the same boat as XII. I liked the grid system and the story for X. Was one of the best Final Fantasy stories i've ever experienced. Plus the voice acting really helps the player to care about the charaters. So I think you should take back that rant on Final Fantasy X.
Yeah in the ending, if Cecil wanted to he could've knocked out Ceodore in one hit. Instead the programmers made Cecil do only 1 HP of damage each turn so he wouldn't kill him.
Every Final Fantasy had its own "gimmicks" and IV's was the introduction of the ATB. While I won't have a say in whether X and XII are "the best gaems evar!" I will say this:
X's sphere grid was a form of leveling that game the player more control over how they build their character, mostly near the end.
XII's License Grid had a similar idea in mind. Though it defies logic of how it would work, it provides natural progression in skill and abilities.
its a little weird because at the end ceodore kicks Cecils ass at the end but you saw Rappy101's play thought of it so you would know that he was holding back if he wasn't he would have killed his own son
did you enjoy FF9? because it is my favourite (FF7 is still epic; i just personally like FF9 more). btw i do plan on getting FFXiii since i think it will be a good game.
not really he changes from some class name don't remember what to red wing but nothing really changes, but Kain gets a class changes into a holy dragoon
That's not really true. The rain only used as a way to show you how long you had to rescue the person. I don't think the monsters had any advantages when it rained.
FF4 on the other hand would cripple you in battle depending on the moon's cycle.
I HATED the sphere grid in FFX i like how this game is just you level up and get better stats

well I actually like FFXII I think it was a great game, nice story, amazing graphics and the battle system is perfect if spend some time learning it... I didn't liked the licenses either, but they give you a lot of LP so I didn't had to worry about that, and the gambits were a great deal so you don't have to stop every second to use a potion or a combination of magic.

fuck downloads, please release the game as a true sequel on ds3 and screw this charging for episodes crap, a story like ff 4 deserves to be played as a stand alone title and not broken down to make square more green. otherwise i'll just play ff4 gba which has a wealth of character add ons in the bonus dungeon to add to the ff 4 story without charging for them, and this phases of the moon crap why fix what wasn't broken.
burnquan 1 year ago
@burnquan the entire story together cost about the same a ds title, if not a little less, but I can understand you wanting it on that system.
hckia 1 year ago

Solid, solid game.
poshko41 1 year ago
@poshko41 I did too, I enjoyed it more than ff13 even.. I played through it twice, the second time completing all the challenge dungeons and getting most of the tails (missed like 2 of them) I beat omega and the other hard optional boss (omega being the hardest). This game is tough though, and I played it with ATB on, and the battle speed at the fastest.

OK, so the monsters go insane again. But all that extra gravity should have a lot more effect on people's lives. The tides, for example.

i personally loved this, and have enjoyed various features they have added to each FF.
the only thing i didnt enjoy was in FFX where you had to do many things to unlock and use their final weapon. my only peeve.
i spent tons of hours on each chapter and even more on the challenge dungeons and im not a new player to RPG whatsoever.
final chapter gives you lots of play time as well.
Tussinfinity 1 year ago
ok the moon cycles are annoying but the "gimmicks" you mentioned in FF10 and FF12 are just their own leveling system
the sphere grid was great, especially when you got into the phase where you re-edited each node. And the license board is just another way of leveling... how can you complain about needing licences to equip stuff when EVERY FF game puts limits on who can equip what
my main problem with FF4 is that its way to simple, no interesting leveling mechanics, you just level up
velocityeleven 1 year ago
I'm still willing to play Final Fantasy if only to find the Diamonds in the mud of these terrible games. I enjoyed FF13 but it had no replay value, and I kinda liked it when everyone had a personality, or in the case of FF1 you could just make one up for the team.

JeremyMcElhone 1 year ago

JeremyMcElhone 1 year ago
@JeremyMcElhone Dude, I don't even know why I'm an FF2 nut. Probably the music and the concept of recovering a lost kingdom. The leveling system sucks, but the game just has a certain "feel"...maybe it was because I was baked when I first played it.
redneckpride4ever 1 year ago
@JeremyMcElhone communism DOES work out

@redneckpride4ever you didn't level in 8 because you just need magic after the first 30 mins or so levels didn't matter at all and that's why it sucked, there wasn't anything in 8 that i really liked at all

Eagleknight815 1 year ago 2
wiiviewr I seriously doubt you've fully played.

Instead the programmers made Cecil do only 1 HP of damage each turn so he wouldn't kill him.

vandel90210 2 years ago
Every Final Fantasy had its own "gimmicks" and IV's was the introduction of the ATB. While I won't have a say in whether X and XII are "the best gaems evar!" I will say this:
X's sphere grid was a form of leveling that game the player more control over how they build their character, mostly near the end.
XII's License Grid had a similar idea in mind. Though it defies logic of how it would work, it provides natural progression in skill and abilities.
SLatios 2 years ago
atleast in 12 you didnt have to be (insert level here) to equipt the (insert item here) LP wasnt realy hard to get anyway
Willettes1 2 years ago
I thought to myself, "Let's see if this guy has a clue about RPGs". One minute in I had my answer: nope!
1) You don't ever have to grind. You almost never have to grind in modern RPGs. Anyone who says you do doesn't know what they're doing.
2) If you want a stagnant series that never changes go play DQ and quit whining about two of the best console RPGs ever made: FFX and XII.
3) If you need a summary of the original story maybe you could look into this whole internet thing.

That's not really true. The rain only used as a way to show you how long you had to rescue the person. I don't think the monsters had any advantages when it rained.
FF4 on the other hand would cripple you in battle depending on the moon's cycle.
