I saw the TV show this was taken from. The asteroid is 300 miles wide; the sort that hit the Earth several times in its very early history. There are very few around that big any more, we know where they are, and they aren't going to hit us.

However, if something that big were in fact coming our way, there would be absolutely nothing we could do to stop it. We could hit it with every nuclear bomb in our arsenal, and it would be like trying to stop a charging elephant with a BB gun.
