Oh, and I am not sure if it is there on all difficulty levels, but on medium, (where I have been playing it) once you go through the portal, if you look around the hill you end up on, you will find a mirror that makes Alice invisible and undetectable. Then if you run right away, you can make it all the way to the tunnel with the water in it without having to fight anything.
