  • that impulse control part of the brain is, i'm guessing since i'm not a neuroscientist, is the same place where morality exists

  • Wow....There is so much clarity in this talk....I am no addict, yet I found answers for myself...

  • nice

  • the final quote "only in the presence of compassion will people allow themselves to see the truth" is from A. H. Almaas

  • @olrichjames thank you, i was hoping Gabor would tell who the spiritual teacher was but it didn't happen. I'm gonna research on A. H. Almaas :)

  • People can be addicted to all sorts of behaviours not just those commonly thought or discussed, such as prescribed or illegal drugs alcohol and cigarettes. The often compulsive aberrant psychological behaviour patterns of many so called "normal" people cause just as much negative effects/affects on themselves and others.

  • HUNGARIAN POWER!

  • ADD

human beings are going to pay attention when they are interested in the subject

labeling kids ADD in classrooms - some teachers could be boring, and forcing kids to pay attention in a subject they might not have interest in seems wrong

  • As a person that has battled with heroin addiction for 30 years and been through all sorts of programs and therapys watched many people suffer and die because of addiction .I can only endorse completly what this guy is saying, compassion is the only answer to the problem of addiction, its been my experiance that many professionals after a peroid of time get fustrated with addicts when they cant cure them :) and end up doing more harm than good to the people they are trying to help

  • Nice to see a Hungarian especially one which prolongs the Mate name

  • @agentfrutopia All I can say is buy "In the Unrealm of Hungary's Ghost"!

  • So amazing! I loved this! Even took notes.

  • i can learn so easily from him, he describes everything reli well so you can understand and remember :)

  • Read Alice Miller to understand people’s pain:

    The cycle of abuse

Humiliations, spankings and beatings, slaps in the face, betrayal, sexual exploitation, derision, neglect, etc. are all forms of mistreatment, because they injure the integrity and dignity of a child, even if their consequences are not visible right away.

However, as adults, most abused children will suffer,

and let others suffer, from these injuries.

  • THIS SAVED MY LIFE! THANK YOU DR.MATE

  • No words

  • thanks for uploading, this is a great lecture

  • There is something about the man...anyone else just cannot stop listening?? My tea water just boiled out while watching this...

  • What's interesting is how many people are susceptible to alcohol in the world.

  • You can see the pain on this guy`s face. You can see that he has suffered himself - no fake dopey smiles.

  • What a beautiful human being!

  • Awesome. Dr. Mate is saving my life. Wish I could meet him.

  • nurture the nation

  • nurtured nations ?

  • ouch!!

  • Just Amazing...

  • SO love this video.

  • he's hot

  • I have a LOT of time for Gabor Maté. Dr Maté is a truly wonderful human being.

  • Un- Belivable

  • what about serotonin? 5-HTT? duh.

  • That was fantastic and I am very glad I watched it all. He's a genius

  • "We cant stand seeing in others what we dont like about ourselves" - WOW...the root of judgement.

  • it is a good lecture i have benifted it so much thank you , but i like to say that what the example of stressed jewish mothers affected her jewish baby is now taking place to all palestenian kids who suffer so many psychiatric disorders because of the israeli agressions against them and their families , i am sorry it has nothing to do with the subject but he turned to such issue in his speach and i had to carrey their painful message to the world because they realy need sympathy , and thank u

  • @mostafamahdyfirst - I see. Why do we continue to hurt one another in the name of religion? I love my God and I know my God is not your God and that is okay with me. And if we can realize this we can feel the peace of God and love one another as brothers and sisters of this earthly life without judgement or the condemnation of being "right / wrong". I may not know with 100% exactness who is right / wrong but I do know God created us both and I wish you love and peace for all time. "God" Bless.

  • Thank God for this man, he is one of the few physicians that combine medical knowledge, psychology, and an incredible compassion. If only more of the right people would listen to what he's saying ( like the US goverment officials, "Drug Czar",doctors, etc.). God bless his work!

  • Thank you for sharing this video. what Dr. Gabor Mate speak about - it is priceless. * Thank You dr. Gabor. Peace and Love.

    L*****

  • woah

  • So inspiring and informative

  • This is brilliant!

  • Amazing lecture.

  • Makes you feel good

  • very useful video i felt like im in class with a good professor and this one hour just passed away so quickly:)

  • Great stuff.

I've been thinking for sometime that there is a very profound connection between addiction and society. Dr. Mate eloquently illustrates it here. We are collectively addicted and we are killing our body (the Earth). It follows that the only interesting question is: if we can overcome our hydrocarbonic, consumerist, beige-furnished fascist thirst, how long will it take to rebuild the planet's essential brain circuits?

  • Awesome. Thank you for your work. The world needs this information.

  • food gets me so high. when I eat chocolate it's like a brain explosion, but I have to stay away from it otherwise I get addicted and eat one to two bars a day for a month and put on a lot of weight before I manage to stop, but god it's sooo good lol :(

  • @lili9000c try to find other ways to make you as happy as chocolate does. Working out, running, going to the gym is in my experience a thing that can break up those eating habit cycles.

  • @laurakaumbartner - YES...the working out physical exercise produces the chemicals that the Dr. is speaking of. It is a natural / positive way to receive those chemicals that make us feel well. However one must stay aware of this as well. Be careful not to make the gym an addiction as addiction in any form leads to a negative long term outcome. The best way to combat this so to speak is to "stay aware" use your self awareness as an everyday practice that keeps you in the light of truth.

  • @lili9000c

I LOVE chocolate and I thought i was addicted so i tried to not eat any for a week. And I did it. So now that I know i'm not addicted, i have gone back to eating chocolate every day.

  • Thank you very much Dr Mate we need more people like you, I´ve been into alcohol and sex addiction for 25 years, and finally I begin to understand the roots of my depression, anxiety and social phobia, that lead me to addiction . Problem is society and family still judges The addicts as criminal or cheaters or loosers etc, that lead us into the addiction again. All we have to do is join together the survivors addicts and show them the terrible consequences of Childhood abuse

  • @oscaedo - Light is beautiful. Smile.

  • Simply Brilliant this man, im struggle with two addictions for almost, 25 years of my life, and now im almost destroyed, and the cause of this was just Adverse childhood experiences ( Sexual abuse and family neglect )like Dr Gabor says . Until all society finally open the eyes and stop judging addict people like garbage, weak and criminals and see that everything that says Dr Gabor is so simple and real and true cause of all addictions , we the addict people will never totally heal

  • This is amazingly unappreciated. I think we, as a humanity need to take this on board and take it into the schools of the future? (i never got anything like this in school)

  • This guys part in Zeitgeist: Moving Forward will blow your mind.

Amazing movie, it's gonna change the world.

  • @gavbag1234 Yes! That's where I found him! I just recently watched Zeitgeist: Moving Forward (what did you think of that BTW?), and I had to know who this guy was. He speaks so brilliantly. I've begun reading his book, "When the Body Says No." It's hard going because I'm not a doctor, but here again, his writing draws me in. I wish all doctors were like Dr. Mate.

  • @gavbag1234 Awesome film. It needs to be dispersed, sent by as many, to as many as possible. I have watched so much more of Gabor & Robert Sapolsky, since seeing it. Have a good one mate.

  • If the neurotransmitter imbalances are the problem, then remedying with amino acid supplements (to provide the building blocks for building depleted neurotransmitters), is a plausiable therapy....

  • @wincelet If it was the Dr.'s would prescribe them.

  • As a recovered drug addict from alcohol and meth I appreciate the genius of Senor Gabor Maté. First got hip to him via Democracy Now! I bless him and wish him the best of health, ~Che Peta

  • Thanks

  • Thanks for posting this. Does he have his own You Tube page?

  • One of the simplest ways to understand addiction. Recovery process is like a born-again experience for a Christian - (Renewal of the mind, community support, unconditional love from others, and personal responsibility). Alumada Keya Amos

  • Thank you Gabor Mate...I saw him in Vancouver and was struck by his compassionate view of addicts and insight that he shares with us...we who wish to judge and point fingers. I am finding myself shaken up....opening to new ways of looking at things, clearing the fog of my prejudices....

  • "Our addictions are destroying the earth."

Dr. Mate has summed it up. Fulfillment comes from being affirmed by other people, not things or drugs.

  • Excellent........thanks so much for posting ....I think you could expand this to mental health problems too.......childhood trauma can ruin any chance you have of living a happy life

  • @landownunder You should really watch the video. Gabor is quite clear and adament that people can transcend our childhood sufferings. Almost all of us have suffered childhood trauma, it is most definitely not a sentence for an unhappy life unless its what you choose.

  • understanding is a weird sensation

  • Thanks for this video. Educating me, and very helpful, holistic for whole lot of people in the world who are working with addiction and addictive tendencies...

  • I just saw Dr. Mate for the first time on Democracy Now. He makes so much sense, and connects so much of what I see personally and professionally.

  • Same here. I`ve watched this video about three times during the last days. This shit is blowing my mind.

  • God Bless Gabor Mate!!

  • This man is a God Send. I am awestruck at his insight and wisdom.

  • Very good lecture. I have understood a great deal why I do the things I do. God Bless and wish this Dr. all the best.

  • @rajudagreat You and I both. Just knowing that ONE person understands lifts a great weight.

  • this video has a nice relaxing pace - please be advised that the hiv test only identifies the presence of 2, 3 or 4 proteins for a positive result depending on which country one is testing in and many conditions will cause the body to produce those proteins including drug use, flu shots and pregnancy among others. please pray for all those who have been misdiagnosed with hiv and AIDS.
