  • This band is phenomenal! The French horn players are really impressive

  • My high school marching played this in our show, it was 3 out of our 4 parts. We came in first place in the state (in NY)

  • this just brings back great memories of playing this with my highschool's wind ensemble.

  • the accoustics of the auditorium are definitely on their side, swallowing up the imperfections. nonetheless, this is a fantastic performance for a high school band, almost kinda hard to believe...

  • were playing this along with reverberations, afterburn, and visions of flight for our marching band show next year, im pumped its my senior year so hopefully we can do work, well this is amazing tht this is a high school band, fantastic job btw!!

  • Good recording. I think it would be helpful if this conductor didn't subdivide the beat so much. It looks awkward and is probably very tiring for him. I think it caused him to rush the ensemble beginning after 2:20. I can here the ensemble attempting to find the new tempo.

Interesting idea using the marching snare to simulate real gunfire.

  • I wish we had a band of this size... really amazing work and emotion you guys put into your music. :) Its really inspirational!

  • Did I see five tubas!

  • @kennyyouch I believe so. :]

  • @band1 okay im in middle school and in one class of just one grade we have like 6.

  • Sounds great. I have to say though, we played this my senior year in high school (2003) and it comes very close to rivaling this version. Don't have any videos, just a copy on a cd.

  • I play first trombone for this (last movement of our field show)!!!

    It is soooo much fun!!!

  • Wow, good job for a high school band.

Acoustics are a bit wierd, but it was still amazing.

  • my percussion teacher played the percussion 1 part his freshman year in high school and he said it was the most fun part he ever played because of that he gave me a copy of the last page to work on and i compleately agree

  • the ending choral is my favorite part to this song

  • the thrid trombone is so fun to play

  • Not as fun as the first.

  • were playing this for the last movement in our marching band show.. its gonna sound really cool when its perfected..

  • last 2 minutes - chills

  • I know right? I will be uploading another "To Tame the Perilous Skies" video that was filmed a few weeks before this video. Should be up within the next day.

  • using this peice for our 06 marching field show, we were undefeated

    god i miss HS

  • DUDE! I got goosebumps watching you guys. You guys are a superb band. Wow, my HS band got to play this in Carnegie on 2006. It was epic. Keep playing, all of you members have great talent.

  • Sometimes I wonder, "where in the hell does Holsinger come up with this shit?!" It's phenominal composition at its best. I didn't get a chance to perform this, but my band played Liturgical Dances, which at the time we considered it to be a challenge in itself. Brilliant job!

  • This piece is so incredibly badass... I sightread the first horn part today with my HS wind ensemble, and it was incredible. We're playing it for real next year - WOO!

    Ridiculous mixed-meter + crazy-awesome brass parts = win.

  • LOL I played principal horn on this at All State back in 97... Holsinger was our director too... which made it even sweeter. I still bust out my CD every now and then and reminisce. By far the most difficult piece of band literature I have ever played. The horn solo at the beginning rocks... not to mention the lovely high B's. This group did a nice job... kinda missed the high D in the trumpets at the end... but it IS a high D. LOL good luck with your group performing it next year!

  • amazing, amazing job.

i come to listen to it over and over again.

  • took this to festival and everybody was good 2's and 3's from the judges and we go in and get straight 1's SUPERIOR!!!

  • very good... holsingers greatest piece written still amazed with how u guys play

  • in reality. moanalua is very diversed in it's students. and when you think of hawaii, many cultures/ethnic backgrounds but do they ever get along? hawaii is the only place where you'll see many different races get along perfectly. and this band is majority asian but not full asians. they're either mixed white/black/hawaiian, etc. therfore not an all asian band. none the less, they do have such a great music program. this is where your child should go to school! it's awesome. :)

  • i wonder if the director had any trouble with this piece... nobody ever seems to care about the poor directors...

    :-C

  • wow... great.

i officially love this song. :)

  • woot woot.. the high school band i was in played this "i played trumpet" and i thought we played it pretty good haha

  • cool song great band

but is it just me or does holsinger not understand theres such thing as dynamics

all his songs are insane time signatures of FFFFFFFFF

  • really, really nice job.

  • this is the song for my winter guard show?

  • I think the last 40 seconds of the timpani run should be played with the backs of the mallets for edge cuz I couldn't hear it, but the conductor is Seta and he knows what he's doing.

  • have you guys heard of a time signature called 3/2?

  • There is actually an incredible amount of time signature variation in this song. There is the extended 3/2 section, but there's also a good portion where it changes nearly every measure amongst 2/4 3/4 4/4 2/8 3/8 6/8 and 9/8. I love this song...

  • Yes there are, and I am also in high school. We are playing this for our adjudications, and we can play it. If the students didn't put forth enough effort to understand the signature put the page by crazy ol' Holsinger, then they deserve the rude remarks.

  • was :30 when the percussionist got a que to shove his head up his ass. and make no effort to blend in the band? damn man that keyboard, (xylo?) is so fucking pieceing. none the less id kill to be at a school with this sort of band

  • We played this piece last year (my sophomore year)in symphonic band at KMHS. The F.horn line is awesome =]

  • I played this as a senior in high school with the wind ensemble. This band is quite good, however shouls follow the conductor a little better and stop rushing brass. :) Very nice.

  • my high school wind ensemble played this at NYSSMA and we got a gold with distinction. But you have to be a good band to even attempt a piece at this magnitude.

  • Back in 1991, my college group (BGSU Symphonic Band) performed this work - I was the timpanist. We were told by Mr. Holsinger himself that we were the second group to ever play this piece. I will never forget the reaction after every performance...instant standing ovation and cheering like I've NEVER heard for a concert number before. Seeing this performance brought back all of those great memories. Awesome job, Moanalua!

  • Nicely done i Played horn on this piece my sophomore year in HS and we got a 98.2 in concert. its a really fun piece to play.

  • Got I miss playing this. I was French horn and our part at the 6:20 mark was one of my favorites I ever got to play

  • thats a great performance. WE played this piece at my high school this year for our spring concert, it was amazing! Spet our wind ensemble is way smaller than oyu guys, were only like 30-ish . . . . . .

  • yeah!! ulises xD

  • lol

you'll be in there soon jazz, and yes, i made a new account x]

no offense to whoever played there, but the single tuba we had last year for wind ensemble would rape you guys . . . . hopefuly i can be close to his level this year =X. . .

  • oh. you replied to the comment on this account, lol, ignore that new account thing then =P

  • nd this is jazz im guessin???

  • lol, hi eric! just barely got in to the youtubeing business?

  • magnolia sucks.

  • you know what... you suck your moms nuts

  • im very impressed... a high school playing at that level?? thats very good

  • well... they are asian...

  • excellent performance i love this piece and almost all of holsingers other pieces!!

  • HI-5!

  • lool is this ulises??from magnolia?

  • =DD

  • WOAH what a performance, I'm very impressed

  • I love the timpani runs at the end, however, I didn't really hear it in this piece. I remember when we played this back in high school, the tuba runs at the end gave all those guys a hard time, looks like you guys nailed it. Good job :-)

  • I played this music for 2005 marching season. Great stuff. Holsinger is amazing.

  • Gotta say - very, very well-performed.

You guys have a great band director.
