cannot figure out how to pick these chords, I see the tab its one pick, I hear it, it sounds like its strummed. I see you picking it and cannot figure out whether its all thumb, some thumb and some finger or what
hi smeghead :D It's not strummed, and I use p,m,i & a classical finger-picking, that is, everything except the right pinky. The ring finger is usually for the main melody while plugging the whole chord with the other fingers (including thumb) at the same time.
@hyperboreal ok so the very first sound I hear is you picking with thumb first followed by index middle and ring fingers all picking the chords to sound as if theyre strummed?
Why aren't you composing movies?? I mean I know this is Michael Nyman's work, but I have a feeling you can compose great scores with that guitar of yours. Well done, mate!
Thank you incredibly. Been looking for an arrangement for this on guitar for ages. Superlative job indeed. The fact that you have included the tab makes you man of the day for me.
best and only version i have ever seen transcribed to guitar.. absolutely beautiful man... Piano version is actually harder cuz u in essence need 3 hands haha, but you pulled this off nicely
Thank you, I knew Nyman was ahead of his time (well, in fact he borrows from baroque music and other classical genres a lot) what I didn't know was that he had to genetically modify his DNA in order to play that piece ;^) Check out the piano version I have on my favorites, that YT user pulls it off quite nicely without genetic engineering.
It was you indeed :) I love your rendition, I've listened to it a bunch of times and it always gives me goosebumps. Mine's on a different key and without those long sustaining bass notes... Well, I hope you don't mind if I post it as a video response now ;-)
Oh, and I'd love to see more of your stuff, two years without posting is a long time man!
I'm gonna have to learn this one on guitar. It's one of my favourite compositions. I recently bought a piano too.. and the first song i will learn is 'The Departure'. Really nice.
It's a great piano piece. I must say that this guitar transcription doesn't completely make justice to the original (it's a difficult task for guitar to compete with the piano octave range!)
Hi guyeylon, [going offtopic now] it seems we cannot get enough of that superb AP album! It's a mystery to me why pieces from that tremendous album like "Tania", "Nocturne" or "Lifer", just to say a few, aren't covered on YouTube yet. I'd love to see other guys (also with better equipment than myself) playing Ant music.
Indeed it is a mystery. Personally I'd LOVE to see "Concerto de Alvarez" or the rest of the amazing "Parlour Suite" performed here on YT, be it you or someone else that uploads the video.
So you must be the lead cellist that appears on your video, if I'm not wrong. How great that musicians like you watch my videos!
And you want to see nothing less than the "Concerto de Alvarez" by Mr. Phillips... I'd also love to see that! :) Haven't tried it yet but looks terrifyingly difficult for the 12-string. I guess the Parlour suite would be more doable. Anyway, so MANY great tunes on that album!
Yes, you are right. On all counts - It's me on the cello in my video, there are no weak points on the album and the piece is terrifyingly difficult :D
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for this!

@hyperboreal
not just the whole melody, index and middle are used for that as well, but some of the top notes (usually on first and second string).

Very nice. Given the power of the orchestra in the original, I never would have thought it could work this well on guitar.
