In a self-defense situation you do need to maintain a good distance from the attacker. A safe distance is at least two arms lengths so the attacker must take a full step in to reach with a punch. The cops obviously did not do that and were easily surprised. Remember: Around blacks never relax!

These cops had no clue what to do. No distance, no awareness, no control of the suspect, no correct positioning. It would have been very easy form them to avoid this attack. Biggest mistake: Both cops looks in a complete different direction and had no control of the suspect in that moment, so it was easy for him to start a sucker punch. Also sad: They need 3 men to control 1 guy...and even that looks not very professional.
