Great mic. I use SVM with my Canon 550d (rebel t2i) to record live organ concerts. You can find examples on OrganMSU channel. The only bad thing is that Canon auto preamp on 550d cannot be switched off, and amplifies all noise when there's no signal. Still, the sound quality is great.
Ive had this mic for a while and use it with my canon hv30.To dater ive not made one satisfactory recording, even though ive used the 10- switch, had acceptable rec levels, and using a new battery in it.I know this mic is capable of really fantastic audio, but never seem to achaive it.Anyone else use the mic with the canon hv30 and had great results? if so id appreciate any setting etc advice.
Works great on the T2i (or 5D Mark II) after disabling the AGC by flashing the firmware and booting Magic Lantern of the SD. Because it's a stereo mic, bypassing AGC via the 19KHz/MP3 combination method renders any dual channel pointless.
....i hear u prefer Rode SVM (with boompole) than rode video mic(mono) for indie movie.....would u explain the reason? cause i will make the indie movie....
I'm planning on shooting/directing short films with my Canon 7D DSLR and I'm wondering if I should go with this mic or with the Rode Videomic (shotgun). I'm also planning on shooting my brother's choir performances as well. I know that the stereo mic would be better for that be can a shotgun mic still provide decent sound? Please let me know ASAP!
@octor for the short films, I'd recommend the SVM on a boom pole as shown in the video as one possible solution on the cheap. You can get the RODE VC1 10' Extension cable so you'll have the length. More realistically, I rather see you get a juicedlink DT454 and a proper shotgun. For choir performances, the SVM is a better way to go than the shotgun, but I would recommend "tapping the board" and recording the facility's mixer board with a separate recorder, then syncing up in the edit.
@s4bones A BeachTek XLR adapter if you want to run an XLR cable from the board to a camera that has an 1/8" miniplug input. The BeachTek allows you to take a LINE level feed from Mixer and attenuate it down to MIC level so your camera can record it. You'll also want to take along a few barrel adapters in case the board operator gives you a 1/4" Output. So I take, 1/4">XLR adapter, long XLR cable, BeachTek adapter, and headphones to check the sound - good luck!
Hmm but next to this mic, can you recommend a other one that could capture good live events. Filming lots of dancing battles etc, outdoors and indoors. Basicly all ive found is this, but it seems so old.. is there something new out?
@HousedanceTanL Some of the best mics have been around awhile. There is no competition to the RODE SVM. It is still the best in it's class. Sure you can step up to a Sony 680s with XLR connections (if your device has XLR), but the SVM is 90% of that mic at 1/3 the cost. Drop by dvestore.com and use coupon code "youtube" for 10% off any microphone - including the RODE SVM!
Tried out my rode svm for the first time last night, and was very dissapointed.I filmed a band from about 4-5 feet away, and it sounds really distorted, even though i had the mic set for loud recordings.I have read that the closer the mic the better the recording but,all ive got is a very horrible bit of footage.I used the mic with a sony dcr-pc9e video cam.
Im waiting for my rode svm to be delivered.I want to use it mainly for live concerts, but also to i prove the overall audio quality on my video. What would be the best setting son this mic for recording live music up close.Im intending to use it with a sony dcr-pc9e cam, also with my canon hv30.Any help is greatly appreciated.
@dvestore I'm kinda of stuck in my decision making. The Canon T2I has all kinds of static when I plug a mic in (regular none powered mic with a six foot XLR to mini plug wire). Any idea if the Rode would have the same problem. My Panasonic sounds great with the same mic attached.
The sound seems very good. My cameras internal microphone is killed by the slightest breeze, it's insanely annoying :P I'll be getting my Røde Stereo Videomic.
This Mic is absolutely the best most well thought out Mic you can buy for Camcorders etc. ONLY trouble is the Hot show mount as, with all hot shoes can break easily. Wish they had spares.
Just ested my ROde using big lving room speakers palying big jazz very loud...sat about 6 feet in front and tested all functions...reg level, dropped level, and bass cut, and I was blown away. The reg levels had zero distortion. I played it back on my mac using the great Tascam VS1 speaker system...and was completely knocked out. I am seriously thrilled.
This mic is to sensitive. I have a HDR FX1 and i can hear the motor noise loud and clear. The rubber shock mount, is not working at all. The mic pics upp all the handling noise. But its ok, left alone, and away from the camera. I will get something else. Useless for me.
Thanks for the video, i just got this for the 5d MKII. I tested all settings but I get a constant Hissing noise. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I filmed indoors in my house to test and connected it to the IN terminal MIC section of my 5DmkII
Would anyone consider using this to say record simple bedroom guitar and vocals? If I can kill two birds with one stone that would be ideal. Using it for both my video recording and solo music recording. Thanks in advance.
would you recommend more the mke 400 or the rode svm? i shoot a lot of live concerts with high volume and i'm scared that the audio will be distorted....also i can't manually control the audio level from my camera (panasonic pv gs 70) so i must try to do it from the mic...thanks a lot for your help
I bought the Rode Stereo Videomic and record live bands too. The quality was great. I have 10 videos up on my page of live band performances that I've recorded with the mic, so you can check them out for yourself and see that there's no distortion at all.
:)
The videos that i used the mic for are all the ones that have the word "DATH" in the titles.

Thanks for the great video! I have a Panasonic DVX100B, and I am interested in getting a high quality on-camera mic for it. Is there any disadvantage to having it connect via the 1/8th inch wire, as oppossed to XLR? The 9-volt battery does not drain camera's battery (I'm assume)? Is it simple plug-and-play with this mic? Thanks!
you should film a loud heavy metal show ith a lot of distortion and gain. thats what i normaly shoot. if it can handle that without that kkggrrrhhh ughhhhh sound that would be the ultamate test.
Nope, but we do have the hama/delv dual shoe adapter if you later want to add a camera light. See the other vid on the MKE400 and Litepanels micro to see it in action.
I'd see if you could tap into the sound board. Since the DVX has XLR input, I'd probably look at a RODE M3. It's big to put on the camera, but for $200, it would work nicely, on a stand would be better. Do a search on our site for M3 and use the coupon code "take5" for a discount.
ok dvestore....i'm a lil confuse? i wanna make a short film. Which one is best for me to use. The Rode SVM or the rodemic NTG2 which of course i will put on boompole
It depends on if you're shooting indoors or outdoors and what camera you are using. RODE SVM works good indoors and outdoors if your camera only has 1/8" miniplug input. The XLR based NTG-2 works best outdoors and you may need a BeachTek XLR adapter. The RODE NT3 hypercardiod works better indoors if your camera has XLR.
oh ok ^_^ but i forgot to mention that im going to have the audio recorded separately on to a MicroTrack II...still which one would u recommend best for in/outdoors.
