This same premise was used humrously in a bit in the Hong Kong comedy "Golden Chicken." The same scene is also a take-off of the famous Meg Ryan 'moment' in "When Harry Met Sally."
This movie kills me. I have watched so many movies that sadden me, but this one guts to me the very core. The last scene where the poor sweet girl is left alone with her fantasies...I think we can all relate to both that pain and the salvation of fantasy. Great great movie.
I wish this trailer was more like the Midnight in Paris trailer in that I wish this trailer didn't give away the surprise of a fantasy twist about a fourth of the way through.
(SPOILERS) Don't people realize that this movie had to have a "sad" ending? It's what makes the movie work. It points out that we are like the Mia Farrow character. We're stuck in a reality that we don't like and that's why we want a happy ending. It's why she likes the happiness of the characters in the movies and it's why we want her to end up with someone better than her husband. I felt this was crystal clear before I even saw the end credits. The ending is the right ending.
@siskelebertroeper No I got that. It just felt like he was trying so hard not make this a romantic comedy (when it was obvious that's what it was) that he had to completely change the ending at the last second. What was the whole point of the characters from the movie coming to life then? Just so she could get dissappointed and end up back with her abusive husband? Did he not just say 2 hours earlier that he was madly in love with her? It just didn't make sense.
I love the idea when on-screen hero becomes real like in The Purple Rose of Cairo or Last Action Hero. Mia Farrow showed brilliant acting. Jeff Daniels and Danny Aiello were great as well. For me, the ending could have been better. Anyway I love this movie.
