Another thing to show exactly how old this is is that at the end instead of it telling you to visit the American Cancer Society online, it tells you to call them. Joan Crawford was a victim herself and oftentimes those who were abused can become psychotic. Was she ever psychotic? Drunk? Drunk AND psychotic? Maybe maybe maybe. I have often wondered about the entire "bad mother" thing...I actually knew Joan Crawford's grandson (he played on the same baseball team as my best friend here in our hometown of Newton, Iowa). You can look it up...his name was Jan Jordan, his mom was one of the "twins" Joan adopted at the same time...shortly after the film came out, they just kind of "disappeared" from Newton. I was too young to realize who Joan was at the time, or I surely would have talked to them about her...too late now.

True, though of course the twins got all the money, and may thus not be counted as objective parties. For her part, Christina seems to be someone who tried to come out of Joan's shadow, but could not: failing in her own acting career, trying to make a go of it as a novelist after she wrote Mommie Dearest, etc. Surely, the timing of the book suggests possible lying on her part. This really is a tough one.

getting back to the question. i don't know where i got this but i think it was an episode of ''night gallery'' hosted by rod serling. it starred also tom bosley who played the patriach in ''happy days''. she played an eccentric millionaire who paid a surgeon for a homeless man's eyes to restore her sight for a few hours.
if i understand you correctly, the ''night gallery'' t.v. movie was a pilot, meaning a shortened version of what would be a full-length movie. we're talking about the same one, right. barry sullivan played the surgeon. tom bosley was sort of a siimpleton. made you feel sorry for him. someone has to be down and out to sell his eyes...man.
you remember correctly! actually, it was a full length movie (about 90 minutes without commercials) done for TV of course, divided into 3 segments. The first had Roddy McDowell convinced that he sees his dead uncle in this painting coming back from the grave (with Ossie Davis as his butler). The second was with Joan, Barry Sullivan & Tom Bosley. I don't really remember the third- I think it had Sam Jaffe in it.
The segment was directed by Steven Spielberg, in an early TV gig. He did so well that he was considered for the directing job on Duel, which led to his theatrical career.

Joan Crawford was a victim herself and oftentimes those who were abused can become psychotic. Was she ever psychotic? Drunk? Drunk AND psychotic? Maybe maybe maybe. Folks back then did not understand the mind any better than they do now. Of course if she ever did anything to hurt her kid remember it was a kids perspective. And we all know that a memory can be unreliable. Not only this, but I can tell you that I have seen all sorts of ways people cope with abuse. The victims hurt worse are quiet.

I have often wondered about the entire "bad mother" thing...I actually knew Joan Crawford's grandson (he played on the same baseball team as my best friend here in our hometown of Newton, Iowa). You can look it up...his name was Jan Jordan, his mom was one of the "twins" Joan adopted at the same time...shortly after the film came out, they just kind of "disappeared" from Newton. I was too young to realize who Joan was at the time, or I surely would have talked to them about her...too late now.

For her part, Christina seems to be someone who tried to come out of Joan's shadow, but could not: failing in her own acting career, trying to make a go of it as a novelist after she wrote Mommie Dearest, etc. Surely, the timing of the book suggests possible lying on her part. This really is a tough one.

i read ''mommie dearest'' and saw the movie. my sister recommended i read the book. i don't know if it was all true but if even half of it was..man.
getting back to the question. i don't know where i got this but i think it was an episode of ''night gallery'' hosted by rod serling. it starred also tom bosley who played the patriach in ''happy days''. she played an eccentric millionaire who paid a surgeon for a homeless man's eyes to restore her sight for a few hours.

you remember correctly! actually, it was a full length movie (about 90 minutes without commercials) done for TV of course, divided into 3 segments. The first had Roddy McDowell convinced that he sees his dead uncle in this painting coming back from the grave (with Ossie Davis as his butler). The second was with Joan, Barry Sullivan & Tom Bosley. I don't really remember the third- I think it had Sam Jaffe in it.
The TV show premiered the following year.

Some ass down here said that Joan was "drunk" in this commercial. Not likely, I say. AND if she was, it's one of the most straight drunk reads for a commercial that I've seen.

I agree, I've read that Christina used to stir up shit and embarass Joan. I've seen the film 'Mommie Dearest' and honestly thought it was ridiclous. A lot of the material in the book, especially the wire hangers beating scene, has since been discredited. Christina was just pissed off at the fact she didn't receive millions of dollars from her mothers will.

well, kirk douglas talks about joan crawford in his book. said he went to her house after a function, and she showd him her kids tied to the bed, and he left as fast as he could. that being said, do i think the book is the whole truth? no. do i think there is some truth to it. yeah. joan crawford was mentally ill, and as such, i'm sure inappropriate things did happen. and i do think there was abuse. do i think she was a monster? no, just a sick woman.

Tina was the first and bore the brunt of the abuse, Tina exposed Joan BEFORE she died as an abuser and the other 2 got money from her estate, there's incentive not to write a book. There are also friends of Joan's who admitted seeing the abuse many years after her death. Face it sheep, she was all the things we know her to be and yes that can and does include both great actress, mega-icon and child abuser and drunk. All of these things are true and none cancels out the others. Accept it.

I've only watched the trailer for Mommie dearest but that was enough. After going through a life like that who wouldn't want to feel in control and have a say, she probably had no power while her mother was alive.
