I have a 73 speedster the same color too, but what has me stumped is how your frame is straight but mine is curved, i heard someone call it a camel back style. I know its a 73 though because i looked up the serial number. Anyone here know why my frame is curved? Thanks in advance.
I have a 79 model, the rear wheel has a little fill/drain plug on it, I was wondering what type of lube is this for? I would think oil would run right out of the thing.
i just bought one at a garage sale yesterday for $15. it was rusty and dirty and i just ordered me some S6 tires which will give me time to clean and service the bike. i bought it so i have something to cruise on around the neighborhood and parks. i want it somewhat rusty so it's less attractive to steal.
it's too dorky for most people to steal anyway. just what i wanted.
Wow, thats a nice bike. I just picked up a 77 today. Red and its in IMMACULATE shape. I bought mine off CL, too for $50. Even from the original owner!
Love those Chicago Schwinns!! Last summer I found a pair of 1976 Collegiates at a yard sale for $150. The ladies bike was absolutely perfect. The mens bike has a couple chips in the paint but the chrome and stainless are perfect. I detailed them, serviced the bearings and now they ride and shift like new. We get looks and compliments any time we take them out for a ride. Thanks for posting your video
We are a schwinn family, I have a 76 speedster in great cond, my 14 year old has a 59 speedster, my 12 year old has a 65 speedster with the camel hump bar, my youngest has a 75 stingray and my wife has a super sweet two speed Hollywood. We love our bikes so much, lucky to live in such a bike friendly state of Oregon!
Thanks for the vid ! I was just looking at a Speedster at a bike shop today, didnt look as nice as yours, and they were asking 175,..thought that might be a tad high ? anyway,..Im thinking of moving to this style of bike, with fenders, upright riding position, etc, and sell my Ol '82 Moto Becane Super Mirage.,,,have fun !
I love this bike! I got my first Schwinn Speedster for my 10th birthday in 1967. My father paid $55 for it brand new. I just bought my third one (a blue '64) in 2006 off Craigslist and paid $160 for a 42-year old bike that needed parts and work. Worth every penny though. The Speedster was introduced in 1959 as a balloon-tire bike. It was discontinued for 1962, then reintroduced in '63 as what was then known as a "lightweight" bike. It remained in production until around 1979.
Often all these bicycles need is a good clean and a service and they are good to go. If your paint is a little on the bare side, a very thin coat of raw linseed oil applied with a soft polishing cloth protects the steel frame from further rust and also helps to rejuvenate existing paint and decals. It also helps protect the frame should you get caught in the rain by making the water bead off.
Nice bike. You don't see many Schwinns here in England, although I understand an importer is planning to bring in some of the heavy cruisers. This looks quite light, with its narrow tyres. How old is the bike?

Very nice. I just purchased one just like it and an awaiting its delivery. Are you going to do any restoration or keep it as is?

I don't think I'm going to restore it. It's in pretty good shape as is. I love it!
