I seem to recall reading somewhere that the giant spider prop from this movie got thrown into a studio warehouse and ended up getting recycled for several other films, and if may have been the spider from the ending of The Fly.
I seen this movie back in the seventies on a local network's "Monster Horror Chiller Theater," type of program. I felt bad for Grant Williams because he kept shrinking. He would have to confront amoebas, bacterias, viruses and atoms.
Nowadays the term "cosmos" would have been appropriate at the end, instead of "God", in order to preserve the beauty and universality of the monologue.
@Myria83 It depends on which school of existentialism one follows. There are theistic and atheistic versions. Also, one may speculate whether the writer of this novel equated the Shrinking Man's "acceptance" of nothingness with the individual's acceptance of his place in the collective.
This is a great flick. Some of the 50s sci-fi movies weren't so hot, but this one is one of the greats, along with THEM!, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Fly etc. Great great special effects for the era, taut, tense, and thoughtful.
i saw this movie for the first time, i am 23 years old, and i can say honestly this movie is one of the best i've saw for a long time, apart from it bein black and white, and old, the story and the meaning is so great, it is overwhelms it. i miss movies like this, i think i will watch some sci-fi from that era more.
@FeroxX I know! I'm 24 and I had flashlights about some scenes in this movie... finally I found it and oh boy, it is a good movie. I love old films <3
One of the most profound pieces of existential philosophy I've ever heard. I never thought I would have discovered it in a '50's sci fi film. What a classic movie. This is right up there with Forbidden Planet, The Day The Earth Stood Still and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.
@Sorroque Don't know if you have a dodgy connection, but the entire monologue is there. If it is the credits you are wanting, may I suggest you try IMDB. And if that's not good enough, perhaps find the movie, rip it, cut it, and post it yourself instead of whining like a petulant brat. D.
@Dedalus05 It is a facinating monologue. I watched it several times. Thank you for posting it. It just is chopped at the end of it, it could be my connection,(AT&T DSL 600mbs). I am sorry if I offended you in anyway. I don't know what a petulant is,? One of my favorite Science Fiction movies as a child. I watched many times on tv in the early 70's.
@Sorroque Sorry for flying off the handle, I though maybe you were criticizing the fact that the credits are cut from the end of the video. Which I felt was a touch churlish. Still, sorry for coming across so harsh. But just to get to the bottom of this - the video ends with, "To God, there is no zero. I still exist! ", right? Because that is the end of the monologue. Either way, to make up for being so grumpy, I'll gladly send you the full movie in *avi format (700megs) if you like?
this is such a well made movie, the ending is so epic, sad emotional and thrilling at the same time, the acting and the effects are outstanding, sure a remakes ok, but this is the shit.
I don't know how I missed this one. I was certainly a sci-fi junkie of the sixties. Novels, movies and black and white TV though I think the original Star Trek series eventually was in color. I was also a big fan of Rod Serling and a series called the Outer Limits. While I liked Podkayne of Mars (a Robert Heinlein novel) which I loved because the hero was a girl I also liked the Three Stoodes in Orbit.
It sounds like the author of the screenplay dabbled in Buddhism. I'll have to watch the rest,

@Jcolinsol The best sci-fi is the kind that focuses on the people, rather than the technology. Take a premise, speculate how it will affect human behavior and interaction, and you get profound movies like this.
Does he fight the spider in the movie? Good the way he figures the spider's daily movements in the book. Outside my house, on cue every evening, these 2 spiders come out their hiding places...
@trsisko They ARE remaking: unfortunately it's going to be an Eddie Murphy slapstick which is why it's so tragic. Honestly I would've liked to see a good remake of this movie, perhaps with a young yet mature college age guy. It would have been a good take. But now that ideas fucked :(
Since he's narrating, it's obvious that he's still alive somewhere.
