I know Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull get a lot of credit for rock flute, but Chris Wood of Traffic, Peter Gabriel of Genesis and of course Ann Wilson do some great stuff with that usually forgotten instrument. Jam on "Freedom Rider" by Traffic for probably my favorite rock flute song! That bowing bit is a bit over the top, but Jimmy Page and Eddie Phillips of Creation got that going!
One of the things I love about this era of the band is that they were good enough to play anything else you'd hear on the radio, and weren't afraid to sometimes reference styles from 3 or 4 top bands in one song while remaining entirely an original Heart composition. The band was great, and no-one could sing like Ann. <3
After listening to this again, it is hard to believe this is (partly) the same band that made stuff like "There's the girl" and "All I wanna do.." I know they were hurting in the 80's and needed hits to keep afloat, but geez!
Ann's flute solo seems very Ian Anderson inspired- I've always thought so. I love it! Not only is she a talented singer, but she's a talented musician as well. And I never knew Nancy played keyboards!
although I love their Zeppelin overtones, the Steve howe/Page violin bow trick really comes off as trite here. I Swear their fabulous drummer Mike Derosier is laughing during that sequence. OTHERWISE..this is a fantastically dynamic band to see Live. Better than their records. Rare talent..and all good looking. Ann blowing on the flute is a big plus, to hear that percussive blowing. Cool as heck. and have you all seen the Label on their Record LP's? a big amanita muscaria mushroom. Pacific NW!
This is classic stuff right here - hearing Heart at their very best brings back alot of great memories... This is Heart at their best no doubt you can keep that 80's ballad crap!
Rippin' flute solo!

Ann is without a doubt the best female vocalist out there, she can do it all. Only one that comes close is stevie nicks.

@12345678941964 I would give anything to know what the other band members thought when he donned that horrible outfit.

My question is where is Nancy in this video?
seattlelovemonger 2 years ago 2
hmmm did you really see this video?? She was at the begining of the song , at 2:08-2:11, 5:15-5:20, 6:23-6:40, 6:49-6:52,
8:46-9:05.
She wasn't the main focus cause the song was mostly drums and guitar and flute. She was where...? ON KEYBOARDS!

Roger must have been a Jimmy Page fan....pretty obvious influence from 3:43-5:15! That's ok, Heart still rocks in their own awesome way.
