Peter Seller's Best Screen Performance PERIOD! This movie is so clever, and so full of hidden messages and themes that you have to pay attention very carefuly while watching it. Just watching this last scene is loaded with hidden meaning and messages that I have learned to decode over the years of watchign this fim over and over again. The end shot....represents Innocence. The character simply has no knowledge that you can't walk on water...so he walks on it. Brilliant!
It is, hands down, my favorite film. Seller's walking on water (with no thought of it) amplifies the last line which, IMO, sums up the meaning of the film: "Life Is A State Of Mind."
What do the guys say at the end? the coffin carriers? They want to make Chance President, sure but exactly what are they muttering??
I just love that scene where he's like "as long as the roots are not severed, all is well and all will be well in the Garden..." he explains business/economic cycles like natural growth cycles haha
@Shibified its an age old arabic symbol, used within the Free Masons, which came from Islam.... not everything comes from poorly made movies for morons.
If you have ever been to the Biltmore Estate (Used as the Rand Estate, i.e., the giant house in the background), you have followed the footsteps of Peter Sellers! Congratulations!
The point of the movie is pretty self explanatory with the final quote..."life is a state of mind." This meaning that how you perceive life becomes your reality. Chance sees everything as a wonder and magical, thus his ability to walk on water arises. The final scene is not meant to be taken literally, he's not God or Jesus or any other deity. He is a man who's state of mind views everyday things with wonder and intrigue. It would be wise to follow in his footsteps. We take too much for granted.
@brandnubian69 that is exactly what this movie is trying to say; everything else people are saying is just their worthless opinion that has nothing to do with this movie.
The water he stands on is shallow, but gives the illusion of great depth. To anyone who watches, it looks like he's walking on water. It encapsulates the metaphor the whole movie is based around. It's a perfect ending.
my interpretation is that since chauncey is so oblivious to reality and the world around him, he thinks nothing of walking on water not realizing you cannot. since he started out as a nobody, and is now possibly going to be the next president, he is able to walk on water, he has become the impossible.
How about the fact that he is so oblivious to reality and the world around him, he doesn't realize that he is the second coming. I thought the walking on water was a strong clue.
@krelbar I think Chauncey is God Its the only interpretation which really fits with the whole film. The clue is in Chauncey's second name and his favorite hobby Gardener.
And in the line he uses throughout the film "I like to watch" I think Jerzy Kosinski perceived god to be benign sitting back and watching the world grow with the occasional bit of pruning. Jerzy Kosinski was a troubled genius may he and Peter Sellers rest in peace :)
I love showing this movie to a packed room of people if i'm hosting a party. Sooner or later people are going to slowly start to watch the movie and pay attention and right at these last few minutes i've seen better reactions than most that i've seen during summer blockbusters. Truly a masterful ending to a great film.
@dyad2r1 "I have no use for those on welfare. No patience whatsoever."
He, that's the kind of president this country needs! Who'd like to see Chauncy Gardner in the White House, raise your hands."
Im rude because your small brain seems to want Chauncy Gardner for president, when he didn't say "I have no use for those on welfare. No patience whatsoever." It was Ben Rand. sillyboy
Odd ending... he was able to walk on water because of his innocence? But there are many innocent people out there like children and the mentally challenged, and they can't walk on water. This is definitely a surprising ending. And it's makes me worry for the future, because Chance is going to become the president of their firm. Surely that will only lead to havoc? Maybe the walking on water is the film's way of letting us know it'll turn out alright.
I think the last picture it is more a metaphor for the hole movie and its absurdity.
Is he really only stupid or innocent? is it useful to see things simple or are they simple? this ending is very good because it lets us think and reflect important things. the most important things like human existence...
Saw this for the first time on ITV yesterday....wow. What a film. What an ending. This film needs to be re-released without the bloopers inexplicably added onto the end. One of the most profound and thoughtful endings to a film I have have ever seen... has a gag reel on the end! Lamentable decision. Sellers was right to argue with the producers. He was a genius. They were not.
@TheLedge84 yeah I thought that too, they should release it on DVD / Blu ray where it just ends with that line "life is a state of mind" and leave the bloopers for the added features section
This was on tv today in the UK, this afternoon. So happy to catch this beautiful film again. Only my second viewing of it but it's a classic without a doubt and Sellers should've got the Oscar for it.
@bloodnokian I second that Thank you. Watched it on itv today quickly rang my mate who hadn't seen it before, absolutely blew him away but he's a major movie buff so he appreciates a good film, told him there's no way he would see the ending coming and to make sure he watched it through to the end and like me the first time I saw it he was stunned. such a beautiful ending made all the more poignant by Peter Sellers death a parting gift to us all :)
@TheLedge84 No worries mate knew you'd like it, I think the key to the ending is the fact that Chancy is a gardener and the line he keeps repeating through out the film "I like to watch" I think Jerzy Kosinski is saying amongst many other observations about human nature of indeed life itself, that Chancy is god and a benign god at that "I like to watch" :)
@InvaderPet I think the scene reflects how Chance is being elevated to a "Christ-like" level by the powerful men carrying the coffin- and who are looking at Chance as the their next political savior.
What pathetic idiot decided to ruin the feel of that beautiful, exquisite ending by bolting on a blooper reel? A blooper reel, for Christ's sake!! It's like having someone point out grammatical errors in James Joyce's "Ulysses".
tha... people reading me now could not imagine what I have expierienced in my life... the movie is LITARLY relating to how I got where I am now... You wouldn`t believe... NOT believe at all what happened in my life.
The ending is open to interpretation... and thats one of the things thats great about. It leaves the viewer with questions. It doesnt flat out explain everything. I love that from movie. Movies that can be interpretated and doesnt explain eveything. It makes you feel as if there is something more to Chauncey, something mystical, larger than life.
Also: "Life is a state of mind" goes perfectly with this ending. Love this movie.
I just finished watching this film about over an hour ago, and the ending is still fresh in my mind.
I likened Chance to that of Death. Now, I know many people believe Chance to be a reference to Christ, but, in all honesty I thought of Death.
He's impersonal, wears mostly black, has no family or background, and right before Ben passes Chance tells him "You're going to die, Ben." And then he walks on the lake to defy our physical realm. It felt like it added up.
Everdownard, you are so close in what you are feeling. The film is ever so importent to peter sellers life and the epitaph at the end is for peter sellers. Mr sellers passed away during the making of this film and the producers decided to change the ending. So they had the stand-in walk on water and make his way to heaven during the reading. Watch this over and over and you will see and what they are all feeling about peter sellers passing.
Actually, the film was the last film starring Sellers released before his death. He completed the film, and he argued with the producers over the outtakes after the end. The film meant a lot to Sellers as he had to fight to get it made and "Life is a state of mind" is inscribed on his tomb, but he did finish what many call his finest performance.
I think it should be left as an ambiguous and resonant image. In my opinion, I don't think it would be right to assume he is christ/death or go down that road of supposition. It just works. Its a departure from the 'reality' of the rest of the movie sure, but the tone of it - It works so beautifully. I wouldn't be a huge fan of this movie overall, but the ending is glorious. timeless.
I thought it was Ashby himself who decided to put the bloopers in.
I agree with you, The ending is fantastic. They should have just left it at that. The bloopers after that just stimmy the impact/power of the final moment at the lake

@JessOnTheRun ,In fact it is an anti-islamic symbol .
The all seeing eye is traced back to Egyptian mythodology
and the eye of Horus . In medieval & renaissance europian
iconography it was an explicit image of the christian trinity .
The triangle represent trinity ,and the eye is the all seeing
eye of god ,which contradicts with islam .
