  • The short story itself is pretty vague. It just doesn't spell everything out for you. Use your imagination and you will find your own answers. Britten's setting is also implicit, but seems to make the ghosts absolutely there, as apposed to James' story where your not sure if they exist or if the governess is nutso, or both...

  • The archbishop of canterbury inspired the tale written by Henry James. The religious piety tend to look at children as being evil, hence the governess being "nutso" is apropos. Piety is bullshit}:>

  • britten's opera doesn't neccesarily make it clear. the governess sees them when the children say they don't. and the governess believes the children are seeing the ghosts when she can't... it is possible that the ghosts are the governesses imagination, but the might also really exist. just because the ghosts are singing characters in the opera doesn't mean they actually exist in the opera...

  • The storyline of the book to begin with; this operatic treatment of it as well.

  • this work is wonderful. Is it serialist music or only tring to sound alike?

  • This story is still incomprehensible, even when you set it to an opera.

  • I disagree.

  • I agree with you and therefore also disagree with the person who said this story is incomprehensible. It makes complete sense.
