I first heard this song in the movie "FM". It was the part where one of the DJ's decided to give up the job and lifestyle of the entertainment industry. I ran out and bought the soundtrack. In my opinion its one of Dan's best songs.
all his songs are so beautiful...i feel ashamed that I discovered Dan after his death.. what can I say.. he is a star now.. (together with so many other "stars" ..) it must be loving and beautiful in heaven...
Gave me chills, goosebumps and tears. I got Souveniers album back in 1978. I loved it so much, I wore it out, then cassette and CD's . He was a deeply spiritual person. I feel so honored that you put this on Youtube...Can someone do "Passage"? I am posting these on FB for people to learn about him and his music. Thanks everyone for your posting.
Arguably the greatest ballad ever written along with Last Resort by the Eagles. To this day tears stream down my cheeks listening to this masterpiece by one the most beautiful male voices of my generation. Not ANYONE today can compare. Dan and Gino Vanelli are my inspirations. R.I.P. Dan. you will forever bring a tear to our eyes and a smile to our hearts.
This song has been an inspiration to me for over 30 years and still is now. I am so sorry he's gone. He is truly is the most gifted artist I have ever known. He will be mised.
This song says oh, so much, with such minimal lyrics, limited chords, unwavering tempo and beat -- but yet it soars, it lifts and it ... is probably (along with 'Last Nail') represents Dan's most heartfelt song.
I love this song. it's so rich -- when I saw him in 1977, he closed with this song, and the parking lot was like a choir of "Let It Shine, oh Let it Shine" for a half-hour after the show.
I'm sorry we lost such a brilliant artist, but I am THRILLED to have been able to experience it.
I just let this play over and over, can't say enough good things about this performance! I saw him near Indianapolis on this tour and it was also his birthday during our Indiana State Fair that year.... I was working at the fair, but slipped away to the concert nearby at Deer Creek....I was not sitting close enough to suit me but I had binoculars! Let It Shine, Dan, Oh, Let It Shine!!!!
I just re-purchased Homefree, Souvenirs and Captured Angel...and have rediscovered the brilliance and the angelic beauty of Dan Fogelberg. This is a gorgeous rendering of an enduring gem.
Saw him open for the Eagles at the Shrine on New Years Eve, mid 70s (75 or 76, I think). His band included Al Perkins, Russ Kunkel, Paul Harris and Joe Walsh. Amazing. Bluegrass, then rockin'-As the Raven Flies! Great Show. Linda w/ Eagles doing Desperado, Take It Easy finale with Jackson, Joe, Fogelberg, etc.
I still cry at the beauty and honesty of this classic Dan Fogelberg song. What an incredible songwriter and performer. I got to see him twice in the 80's and I truly enjoyed both concerts. What a wonderful performer.
musemichelle (in case this doesn't post as a reply which sometimes happens) -- Isn't it wonderful that no one has anything bad to say about Dan Fogelberg?
A musician unsurpassed in my opinion. A song that brings tears to my eyes remembering listening to this in the '70s on his first album. He will live on in my heart and soul, and many others, through the beautiful music he created and shared with us forever.
Thank you so much for sharing this video! I had the pleasure of seeing Dan live in concert quite a few years ago, but he didn't perform this song {one of my absolute fav's by him}!
The heaven's have surely gained another wonderful choir member. So sad he had to leave us so soon though. :-(
Dan Fogelberg was the epitomy of the American singer/songwriter. His music is an inspiration to all those who admire his art. He had the voice of a angel and that coupled with his incomparable lyrical style made for some of the best music this country has to offer.
The US lost one of it's greatest underrated talents the day that Dan Fogleberg graced the heavens with his breathtakingly beautiful songs of hope, love, & peace.
Thank you, Dan, for allowing us to share your love of life.
This is my favorite song off the "Souvenirs" album which was a classic. It is so sad he died so young. Older guys like me, get checked, especially if you're over 50.
Tribute concert in Sellersville,PA,August 13th at the Sellersville Theatre. Celebrate the life of Dan's on what would been his 57th birthday. The concert benefits the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Living Legacy website has all details or go to the theatre website also.
Part one:I was there also. I was in row F and dead center. What a place to see concerts! Such a intimate place. I agree with the Happy Birthday to Dan and of course the singing of Gambler. The most emotional part of the night was Jim Photoglo. When he walked away from the mike,at the beginning of The Reach I was in tears from there on.I stuck around and spoke with all of the performers and got some hugs in too. How about those Refugees? Cindy Bullens is one wild woman on stage?
I can't believe it's been 7 months since he's passed..Almost every night since I was listening/searching for everything of his on here and constantly playing his cd's - I had to stop.. Like any true Dan fan his music touched me like no other and no matter where I am/or what I'm doing if I hear one of his songs it instantly takes me back 25 years to my college days and relationship memories.. We were so blessed to have him and his music in our lifetime.. rest in peace!
It is still hard to believe he passed. Jeanne has been kind enough to update some photos on Dan's website...there is a great photo and explanation of Dan ice skating (after his dx and treatment). He looks really great in it..even though he was weakened. Take a look. Greg
I was lucky enough to be at this concert in St.Louis many years ago,and the memories of that night and his music has always been with me...his music moved me like no other artist.
These vids that people like you take the time and effort to post..both bring back some powerful memories and stir the raw emotions associated with those memories. I have read that the sense of smell triggers the most powerful memories. For me...its music. Thanks again.
When I was divorced the first time, Dan came with me. Just a few albums at that time, Innocent Age wasn't produced yet.Go to the Barnes and Noble website, they have some of the best prices for his music.I am still trying to get Captured Angel on CD. Have three copies on vinyl, two are mint, and one on cassette.I am wearing out the tape. You can buy this DVD through Amazon, for around $10.00
Watched this today on the DVD, Greetings From the West. I couldn't stop crying. Life goes by in a blink. That was 17 years ago. It just seems like yesterday, wish it was. He still be with us. His smile at the end really shows his sweetness and humbleness. Dan you showed loved and recieved love back.Miss you.
One of my all time concert moments back in the late 70's at Ford Theater in Detroit. I'll never forget 3,000 people (small venue) all singing the chorus at full volume. It still gives me chills to think about it.
Great video!! didn't realize how vibrant he was in concert- unfortunately never got to see him so I truly appreciate seeing the live video's. Love!! Love this song!! a classic like so many of his are..
This is the last song he played when I saw him in 2003 in Kettering, OH, and it just so happens to be my favorite. It really felt like a day where fate was appearing in my life, because I've always loved his music and had wished to see him in concert but never thought I was going to get the chance to. I heard an ad on the radio while passing through Dayton, OH and drove all the way back down two days later from Toledo. Little did I know he would be dead 5 years later.
This is one of the songs we played at my younger brother's funeral in 1980; this and "Love Is The Answer" by Todd Rundgren.
Fogelberg and Rundgren -- gifted masters in the lost art of creating truly genuine music. Truly sad with Dan gone; I grew up with Dan, he fashioned an enormous chunk of my teens, in the '70s.
Strange: I never could have imagined there'd be a day when Dan wouldn't be here, creating more music. Love you, Dan.
I agree with you on Todd Rundgren. I am a huge Fogelberg fan and also love Todd Rundgren. Saw Dan twice, last time in 2002 and saw Todd in the late 70's. Very different in styles, but knew how to pull on the heart strings of their listener.
Let it shine Dan...RIP. Missing You...

It may be one of the most understated cliche's of all time, but the world lost more than a man and a musician when Dan left us.
I miss him still, as much as I did the day I learned of his death, and his music keeps pulling me back.
Peace.

You share a birthday 8/13, with my oldest brother.
Just something else, thankfully, that can help me, remember you.
And yes, this is "Beautiful."
(Also, the 13th of August can bee seen circled on a calendar, on the album, "Souvenirs")
Thanks.
