Thanks! This is definitely one of the jewels of my fan collection. My guess is they did not make too many of these since I don't see any others on the net.
its funny you should ask, its running right now to cool our bedroom off. its a daily runner and it works like a dream. there is a slight rattle coming from the grille when its in "high" but its probably just a loose screw. i will fix it one of these days.
I grew up right off of Carson St. and Clark Ave. In Jr. High (Bancroft Jr. High), my friend and I used to either ride our bikes or skateboard down to the Treasury back in the late 70's. My family had a fan just like this, in fact my mom still uses it. Brings back memories . . . . .
That's cool! My childhood fan was a light blue Kmart Lakewood P-23. Basically the same fan but without the push buttons, and it had the rotary style speed selector. I am still on the lookout for one of these in good or mint condition. I have the advantage of working at the Salvation Army so eventually I see almost everything come through there. I know it will show up some day. : )
sure, loco. i will make a video tomorrow showing the back and demonstrate the rattle it has in high. it has 4 bolts to the frame if that is any help in the mean time...
Oh wow. That is definitely a rare one. The cabinet, color, and especially the speed control with thermostat. And in great shape. Nice one!
We've been using first gen, second gen, third gen to describe the plastic blade set models. For the metal ones, there are the 3 rivet and 4 rivet models pretty much. Though there are no years for them, just that they used 4 rivets for the higher end fans.
Mine is a 4 rivet apparently. By the way, I have been running the fan for a few days with no problems but just yesterday it started making a very noisy rattle in the high position and sometimes in medium. Low still runs quietly. I used a couple drops of liquid wrench in the oil tubes on both sides of the motor followed by WD-40. I let it sit over night and the problem is still there. Any ideas?? The rattle sounds very similar to the one a Zero desk fan makes but louder. Thanks.
Never use WD-40 or Liquid Wrench. Those are just for moisture displacement/penetrating oil.
When you go to the hardware store, get some non-detergent SAE20 motor oil like 3 in 1 (make sure it says non-detergent), or if you can find some, Zoom Spout oil. Put a few drops in each oil port.
@magicmaker15 Actually I just read about that store, it was the first chain to be both department store and grocery store in one, they were actually really big stores, on the east coast they were called "Treasure Island".
The JCPenny I have seen had the dial speed selector. Not sure if they made push-button ones. Seems like there should be some like that since its was part of the same company.
Wow, I really lucked out on this one! I am still a newbie in the fan collection world so I generally look for metal blades and I figure its worth grabbing. I could'nt find anything like this one for sale on the net or on youtube or anything so I was thinking it may be a rare specimen. Thanks!
Thank-you! If you have a video of your plastic blade model I would like to check it out. Until now I only owned the crappy modern day walmart lakewood, so I am still getting "dialed in" on the vintage ones.
i think i will hold onto it for now, thanks. :) plus it has a nasty rattle i have yet to fix. i am hoping its just an oil issue but i have not had time to mess with it lately.
i am certain the sound is coming from inside the motor housing. it only happens in high for the most part. i just made a video by the way so check it out when you get the chance. Thanks
You have a real nice P-23 with way better features. The generationed Lakewood box fans were based on the plastic blade sets. The first generation had the wide square blades from the late 70's. The 2nd generation had the wide rounded blades from the early 80s, and the 3rd generations came out with the skinny bannana-like blades; those fans came out in the late mid 80's through the early 90's. Today's lakewoods box fans are just flower garden pinwheels with braced blades.
Thanks for clarifying the generation issue! I noticed it looked like the K-Mart P-23 Lakewood but it has the push button switches as opposed to the dial selector, and thermostat which is unusual.
Speaking of Lakewood plastic-blade fans, I may be getting me a 1st generation one from a cousin of mine. This one I may be getting is the Kmart version (K-223.)
Okay, I'll just have to see if I can get my camera working. If not I may have to get a new one. I may also be getting an old G.E. table fan of some sort. Plus, besides doing a demo video of that Lakewood when I get it, I may buy one of those new Lakewood (or should I say "Junkwood") Trash boxes to use for a quality comparison video also featuring my K-223 Lakewood, as well as a cheap fan ownage video of my own. I really think those are funny just to show you what I think of cheap fans.
By the way, I know that you only like metal blades, well I do too but I like just any fan that's vintage. It's just that I can only use a vintage plastic-bladed fan for comparison with today's junk fans because there is no comparison between the vintage metal-bladed ones and those "trash fans" we know today.
I tend to stick with the metal bladed fans but I admit that there are some quality early model lakewoods and others with plastic blades. The main concern is the motor and its performance and durability. The crappy motors today are slapped together with the cheapest parts by slave labor in China. Not built to last.
Where did you find this one at?

I bought it at the Salvation Army. : )

Definately looks like a Lakewwod. Treasury was a chain of drug stores owned by J.C. Penney.

@warmsignal Yeah, we used to have a Treasure Island, too. Different Than the Penny's stores however.

Never seen one of those with push-button speed controls. I like the color, those terra-cotta colored models are uncommon.
Very nice find!
dburrigh 3 years ago
Thanks, I like the color better than the standard light-blue on the Kmart Lakewood fans.
My Eskimo is light-blue too so its nice for a change.
gummobg73 3 years ago
There use to be a Treasury Drugstore close to where I live that was owned by JCPennys.I wonder if any of the JCPennys fans looked like that?

I have never seen a Lakewood like that. Push buttons are very rare on the 20" models!
Excellent fan!!!

I'll make sure to get a video of that. If that walmart lakewood craps out on you make sure to kill it.
RyanTheHermVixen 3 years ago
i may just kill it before it craps out. i don't even use it anymore. when it comes time for the murder, i will definitely video the carnage! lol.
gummobg73 3 years ago
I cant wait to see it smash. I hate those weak fans so much.

dam that is one nice lakewood. i love the paint. very good shape. mint. may i ask how much you paid for her?
