Yup.Page got rocked badly on occasions, but he clearly won the fight and hit Lopez clean with virtually every combination he threw.Decisively outworked and outboxed him.
JLL at the time was regarded as the bigger puncher than Ike, Oscar, and even Tito, but he could be outboxed. He was also known to undertrain and hit the yayo alot. Alot felt he won this fight. Lopez had Duran-like power, but lacked some skills would of made him a legend surpassing everyone. Would of loved seeing him squashing Vargas, Tito, and Mayorga.
These guys are some serious studs. Not only was that a brutal yet beautiful fight. When these guys do get hurt some how they nut up and keep going. Awesome!
i have been a fan of boxing for more than two decades and i can believe i have never heard or watched this guy .. Jose Luis Lopez.. what a beast... devastating punch and an unbelievable chin.. had his heart been in boxing he could have been a mexican great along fighters like Barerra and Morales.. skill wise he is along their lines but i think he has more power
Hey i just seen the Page vs lopez fight here on youtube someone posted it , thank god but i think its Lopez's fault for not punching enough in the fight, if he would went all out i think he knocks out Page and becomes champ again.
If anybody gets the chance to watch the Lopez vs Campas, that was short of a manslaughter a brutal fight, not sure if it´s up on youtube. Lopez like all Mexican warriors always coming to fight, judging from this video he seemed to get the rotten end of the decision but it´s only based on the highlights watching the actual fight might prove wrong
I did not see the entire fight. What I do know is that Maestrito always, for whatever reason, was unlucky at the end of 'close' fights. Another thing that was obvious in this fight is that Maestrito rocked Page. Maestrito was never really in danger, but he seemed to take too many brakes. Maestrito convinced me of his skills in the Quartey fight.
Jesus! Never seen page fight live besides Lewis fight but he was a dangerous puncher and recovered quick. Woulda loved to seen him in with Ike Quartey or Tito.
I wish someone could upload this whole fight.I remember watching this live on tv in 1998 and thought to myself that if jose luis lopez could haved punched more he might haved knocked out james page. Both guys could punch like hell and lopez had a great chin and good boxing skills ,it's a a shame that he didn't live up to his potential because he had the goods to be a great fighter. And to answer your question it could haved been a draw.
@Nationalsocialisten1 I haven't seen the whole fight--it looked close based upon the highlights. But what's stupid about your comment is its racism. It's uncalled for and totally out of line.
As for the fight, it was a good one and Lopez looked the winner to me too. Page landed a lot of shots, they just didn't have the same effect. Not even close. Lopez was a rock...w/skills. Prototype Mexican warrior.
James Page flat out kicked his ass! It wasnt a close or controversial fight.
@gnxgato - vargas would have outboxed him, trinidad would have taken him apart.Mayorga would have been a fun fight.

@Kedbuka I saw the whole fight live. Well to me he looks like a monkey in the face, regardless if he is black or white. Ugly.
