  • Picked up my R1 Talo yesterday. Thanks for the review. Apparently since this video these issues have been addressed by Remington as my R1 has none of these issues. The gun is tight toleranced. Its not a true GI gun. Winter finally arrived here, three months late, so I don't know when I'll get to test it out, but it hand fed everything I put in there, including 200grn semi wads. So far, so good for a range gun.

  • I just bought one of these today. Nice gun. However, mine has the exact same problem yours had!! Flashing inside the dust cover of the frame that is scratching the slide and taking off the bluing. Disappointing! Guess I'll be getting some warranty under way next week......

  • @operator , your guns at 10-15 feet away , this gun is deadly acurate the only gun I have that is a little better , a little is my CZ 75 and that's only because its 9mm and no recoil at all , so take your cock I mean glock turn it sideways limp wrist and shoot at a POP can 10 feet away while I shoot POP cans at 40 yards with the R1 and Cz even my XD to be honest , I carry the XD because It's lighter but for far distance It's the R1 or Cz , do some research before posting 19 comments , try Google

  • @operator your a retard , I have owned glocks because " everyone says they are great and the police use them " they were my first gun and man do I regret that purchase they have an instant 2 in drop on the target they point and feel awkward how can u defend yourself with a gun that isn't even comfortable , now yes I know they have been proven but let me tell you my XD's will walk all over them and this R1 would out shoot any glock 18,27 or whatever without a doubt in my mind , u must only shoot

  • what do you think of the 1911 Citadel in comparing it to the Remington 1911R1 or other 1911?

  • Daniel i bought one a month ago and i love it bro

  • "prob thinking, gosh this guy doesn't clean his guns" lol good video thanks for the info. I seen one and it was made in Brazil and another one was made in the U.S. any info on that?

  • A loose 1911 is a good thing. Hold it by the grip and shake it and hear it rattle. That gives it room for dust, dirt, fouling so it will run in a dirty combat situation. I've seen others, such as Kimber lock up after a few hundred rounds on the range because of the very close machining tolerances. So shake that gun and appreciate the rattle.

  • very nice review dude.

  • fondled one today and was impressed,my guy said 600 bucks,,,,,but there is a SS model forth coming so I may wait but compared to many others I thought it was pretty good

  • My first 1911 was a Remington Rand just like that one. Sure do miss it.

  • The old 1911a1 is not poorly machined it is made to spec( loose enough to work at all times).During Vietnam War the armourers took match 45s and reground the frame rails and cut chambers to looser mil spec because then they would go bang every time the trigger was pulled. A match grade gun is fine if you go home every night and can keep it in pristine condition but someone in a combat zone may not be able to care for a weapon on a daily basis.

  • like this govt look, thinking about my first 1911....

  • on another video someone was talking about the fatal flaw or something, is this true or just bs??

  • @snoopaloop007 It's just BS

  • NO SAFTEY??

  • @snoopaloop007 there is a safety

  • @snoopaloop007 it has a safety just not an ambidextrous safety

  • Rollmarks are butt ugly. Not bad for the price. I also like the trigger on this pistola.

  • @monkah15 IMI or Magnum Research?

  • Just got mine for christmas. Thanks for showing me how to do this.

  • 1911 are a waste of money

  • @kenyata They are affordable, powerful, and damn good looking.

  • That was a poor machining job. :(

  • i love these kind of videos :)

  • even though remington is a great manufacturer, i still can't get the small rifles for younger shooters that they made in the 60s thru 80s. they just look like toys compared to a s&w or rgr.

  • Have you had a chance to look at the enhanced version yet?

  • I own an R1 Centennial, and I don't even want them to fix the slide wear. As a wise man once told me, "A gun is a tool, if you don't want it to get worn, then don't use it." That front slide wear seem so common that I believe it will probably authenticate my gun in 50+ years or so.

  • I would call the slide being a little loose a good thing, just means the gun can run dirtier

  • Good video man. Don't feel bad. I got a dud also. I ordered from an online dealer because I just really like the gun and I am having similar issues. The scratches aren't as bad but it's there and I don't want that, the trigger is extremely loose and can wiggle left and right, up and down. Also, if I manually cock the slide toward the rear and release it forward slowing it catches on the barrel and won't seat all the way back forward sometimes.

  • So disappointing to see Remington let poor quality like that make it out of the factory. I've always liked Remington, but in the last few years they have changed ownership and with that I think their commitment to quality is not what it once was. I'm hoping they can turn it around quality wise, because they are an iconic (an American) figure in the firearm industry.

  • ruger sr1911 or springfield loaded or springfield GI. rock island too. nothing else in this grand or less price range. even then, replace the slide stop, firing pin stop, hammer, sear, disconnector, firing pin and spring straightaway with ed brown or wilson combat forged toolsteel parts.

  • @operator223 Why the fuck did you feel the need to post 9 comments in one day? You received no responses/replies in between any of your dumbfuck statement, you could have easily condensed your bullshit down to one comment.. Anyway, I have done my research, and I own a R1 and Glock 19 - both are high quality and reliable handguns. Also, not everyone is a snobby handgun elitist who can afford a high price customized 1911

  • @danz1420

there ya go. Right on the money.

  • with all the shit guns coming out these days you'd think there was a conspiracy to make guns that break within 1000 rounds.

  • tell ya what.... find a good gunstore. IF they wont let you, or do it themselves for you, field strip it before you buy, run like hell and getcha a new gun store.

  • I wish the poser NOOB idiots would quit feeding these crap manufacturers. They give John Browning a black eye. IF you dont know what quality is, getcha a Glock. Id much rather bet my life on my Glock than a low quality POS like that. you want to bet your life on a POS like that be my guest. I build my own 1911's and got some good glocks too.

  • You know how to tell a poser NOOB during a gun review... they freaking do those assinine safety checks at the beginning of a video for the audience.... freakin absurd. whatcha gonna do, hurt me through the camera? And you did it what 2 or 3 times??

  • You actually bought that POS ?? why didnt you look at it before you paid?

  • cosmetically it's pretty, like a kimber, but internally it's pure shit, like a modern kimber.

  • A good idea is to go get a bare matched set high quality forged and fitted slide and frame, then build it one agonizing piece at a time with high quality ed brown parts, as you go. In a few months you will have a heck of a good pistol, and you will learn a ton about it, and can fix it anytime because you now know all about it. There's craploads of good and free info on the internet, you can learn to be a 1911 gunsmith as a bonus.

  • a lot of 1911 makers are either just using a name or cramming their pistols with cheap crap MIM or cast parts. Do your research carefully before buying. Get the best pistol you can, you're life could depend on it.

  • Nice video man...thumbs up!

  • Yep, another shitty gun from Remington. My mid 2000's 870 was the same way.

  • I've had very, very good luck with the Armscor/Rock Island Armory 1911's if you're looking for an affordable option. A lot of gun for the money.

  • looking for my first 1911..........This one be it,,,,,,Thanks

  • Where did you buy the gun at the academy down here has one but I think it's the centennial model and if it is i think that one comes with etching on it which I really really don't want I want the one you have.

  • I bought one of these a few months ago and have had zero problems with it. Everything is super tight, which makes stripping it difficult, but that's frankly a problem you'd like to have.

I understand that when they first came out there were alot of quality problems, but I think its safe to say that now, at the end of 2011, they've got most of them worked out. Great gun for the price.

  • THIS GUY IS VERY INFORMATIVE .BUT HE NEEDS TO TRY THE de-caff.

  • One...21 Guns! Lay down your arms...give up the fight!

  • I traded my dud 629 S&W .44 for a Ruger Sr1911 and I am very very happy

  • I like the Remington R1, and I got one for my Dad for his birthday.

A couple of things that I liked about it was that it was reasonably priced, decent quality and had the same heft as a USGI M1911a1.

  • i love it beatiful gun.ive been looking at remington but now i prefer a springfield arm. i know they will fix it for you they have amazing service. i hace an ACR and i broke the front sight and they sent me one for free, im also sending it back for the recall and they've been really nice.

  • great informative vid. Sub'd.

  • @almightybeergod, what exactly was the problem with your roommate's r1?

  • my roommate bought one of these when it first came out. he sent it back to the factory twice and still came back a non-reliable gun. i just bought the iver johnson eagle and made him super jealous. its a great gun for $579. id recommend one to anyone looking for a reliable 1911 for under 600. super tight, nice grips, skeleton hammer, extended beavertail, and dovetailed front and rear adjustable sights. mine didnt really need a break in either. lucky me

  • Hello, thanks for the nice review !

I am also considering this 1911R1 for christmas as a present to myself ! :-)

Well about the poor machining, to me (as a ex-QA engineer) this gun shouldn't be sell like this ! This default is very visible and I wonder what was doing the QC operator or the CNC worker at this time ? Maybe it was time for a sleep ! Anyway, happy that they fixed it for you ! Have fun and remember... Life is good ! ;-)

    Eric.

  • interesting video, that is certainly a fine weapon.

  • Look ,you want a GREAT & DEPENDABLE M1911? I bought a Metro Arms"AMERICAN CLASSIC II" M1911. It has ALL the bells and whistles that the HIGHER END pistols have, Kimbers included...,ALL of them. The fit ,finish & reliability of this gun is OUTSTANDING! . It is made in the Philipines and it costs..............................$420 BRAND NEW! Google or Youtube one and you will see. My son LOVES mine and went and bought HIM one:) ACII /M1911 45ACP

  • the r-1 sucks,,i had a chance to by one for $300.00 and turned it down..i saved up for a month longer and got a kimber,,now thats a nice gun

  • Shame that it sucks. I've messed with a good few in different gun shops and liked them better than my kimber. Of course I didn't shoot it either...

  • You should do an eval of the Ruger SR 1911 as well

  • good review i got one and i shot about 50 rounds through it and then took it apart to clean and the firing pin lever broke but i called the store and will be getting it fixed no charge

  • Given the the MSRP of both the Remington R1 and that of the Springfield Mil-Spec are roughly the same, which one in your opinion is of better quality?

  • Didn't John Browning make the M1911? If he did (Which i know he did) The how come Remington make them too?

  • @NeighborhoodProjects

    JMB DESIGNED the 1911.

  • @hackerhunterdotexe Oooooh ok Thanks

  • i compared this to my colts,i don't think it's a pile of crap at all. shoots nice tolerances are tight. for the money this is a dam nice pistol. but of course u are a colt man. so my opinion means nothing. this is my daily carry pistol and i have never had a prob. and god forbid i have to use it but i think with my experience i would come out ahead in a situation.... so i think u are in a FANTASY world. this gun would knock the hell out of anyone, same as any .45 with a 5 inch barrel

  • I have a 1990/91 manufactured Parkarized 45 Springfield Armory 1911A1 mil-spec with a few added touches like the mag well bevel, higher profile sights, lowered ejector port, walnut grips, and some blued hex nuts that I used to replace the original grip srews. It came with what I think is an 8-round Shooting Star magazine. It shoots FMJ and JHP great out of the Shooting Star and 80s government contract mags. If the Remington R1 meets that standard, I may buy one -- if the price is right.

  • Take a 1911 armorer's course and you will know the Remington 1911 is a no-go. I wish you the best luck with your pistol, it probably works for you just fine but it's not the most desired option. I love Remington's ammo, but not their firearms. Even the modern-made Rem700s and 870s are showing signs of cutting corners to make cheaper weapons. It's a sad reality that many companies have started doing to lower costs, but there's still companies out there that refuse to cut corners.

  • Thank you for sharing the history on the Remington 1911. Thanks, again, for your advice regarding my situation with my recent purchase. Keep up the great work!

  • one of the better reminington 1911 reviews out there.

lots of ugly, i think i'll be looking at springfield

  • I have one of these great pistols and have not had any problesm with it at all .the tigger was a little mushy at 1st but has cleared up just fine and I love it !

  • You Can't Fix It Yourself...Scratttcccchhhh Reminds Me Of The Ringer

  • Looks like a good gun and Remington is usually a great company@

  • I cocked the hammer all the way back so the spur on the hammer presses againt the tang the grip safety which in turn depresses the grip safety.

  • So how did you drop the hammer without depressing the grip safety?????? I returned mine for the very same issue that remington tried to fixx Twice....... HUNK O JUNK !!!

  • I just got my Remington 1911 two day's ago and put 50 rnds through it yesterday. I have the same problem with the frame. I called remington and their sending the bag to ship it back. I sold my Glock 21 and I'am not happy .

Did they take care of you ?

  • great review man.. im looking to purchase this remington for my first 1911.. cant afford the kimber or colts yet... thanks for the tips..

  • i plan on getting this how much?

  • please send this gun back to remington and ask them to do everthing you want done to it, to make you happy, maybe they can send it to kimber and they can do the work, after you get it back, put it in a glass case, and be carefull, you might get a scratch or some dust on it, i use mine to keep me safe, not show it off

  • a company pays remington to use their name on this gun...i owned one of these so believe me when i say it is a cheap pile of steaming crap. i bought into the mystique of remington and their wwi 1911's...they did NOT make 1911's in wwii ...that was remington rand...a completely different company...anyway the fantasy of a quality american made 1911 at half the cost of a colt is just that ...a FANTASY.. i have since bought 2 colts and they were worth every penny plus the pride of ownership

  • @thebonnice

Actually Remington did make 1911 during WWI. There was Remington Rand and Remington UMC. Don't believe me? Do a search. There are plenty of online aritcles, magazines and books that prove remington UMC did indeed make 1911s during ww1. I too own a colt, a kimber, and a springfield. All of which are very high quality guns. I also have a remington rand. Howerer not everyone can afford to spend $800-$1200 on a 1911 and I like show people what a lower quality 1911 offers.

  • @danielp59 He said they didn't make 1911's in ww2...re read his post

  • @danielp59 Well said your a good dude.

  • @thebonnice lol I saw one of these in gander mountain and asked to see on this gun is very nice as a standard gun a lot of things done to this gun is stuff that i get paid good money to do to a colt or other guns the trigger on the one i had was very crisp the rails and the slide were rather tight fitting a lower ejection port this gun has no problems i see or feel on it as a bas gun it has a lot of potential

P.S. IF ANYONE OPEN THEIR MOUTH ABOUT KIMBER OVER PRICED PIECE OF SHIT

  • @thebonnice you need to do some research be 4 you make an ass of ur self on youtube

  • @thebonnice A company pays remington to put there name on this gun....are retarded or just plain stupid. How about you do some research and learn what your talking about be for you go flapping your man pleaser.

  • @thebonnice instead of trolling how about you make an actually video of your "colts" and possible your rem 1911? oh wait, thats right, you cant cause your a troll

  • @starshock01 lol!

  • @thebonnice srry man but ruger just bit that comment in the ass i love my sr1911 great quality no "loose" feeling in the slide and accurate as hell

  • @thebonnice The Ruger SR1911 is all American Made and for 700 bucks, the same cost as this Remington, it BLOWS it, and the colts, out of the water. Id look into it..

  • your anal dude.... you bought it in a hurry with scratches on it... your bad. next time order another instead of buying a scratch one.... you know it shoots straight why dont you talk about that? or do you just disect them and store them away like hannibel lector?

  • Um you are a wrong Remington UMC and Remington Rand never worked together making 1911's. Remington UMC made no 1911 A1's for WWII. Remington UMC also didn't switch to Sporting Goods, the went back to being just a cartridge manufacturer. (UMC means Union Metallic Cartridge)

  • The barrel bushing turns much easier if you don't engage the safety and allow the slide to slide back about an inch or so, then you remove it by hand without the wrench.

  • I brought Remington 1911R1 last June and had no trouble at all. It handle very well and well made.

Only problem is the cheap ammunition (brought at indoor shooting range, forgot what brand is, not major brand). I now use PMC Bronze .45 ACP 230GR FMJ for $14. Had shoot over 1,000 round and it jam only 5 times.

MSRP is $699 but you can get it cheaper down to $659 at most retail sporting store.

  • whats the price friend?

  • man i would be so dissapointed in remington if i got this low quality of firearm, i know it will still work just fine but i would hope for better machining from such a well know company

  • Inorder to depress the guide spring I use the headstamp of a .30 cal. rifle cartridge. Works fine. Reassembly same same.

  • Great Review, I have been looking at this gun ever since it was announced. Thanks for the review

  • I have this gun and I really like it. Shoots great and looks good, too. Good vid, friend.

  • i just look at remingtons warrenty plan on the site and u get a 2year plan and it says that if your firearm is a defect to where tthey have to give u a new firearm they will there is more with it but i just thought that is cool i wish it was a lil longer or lifetime but im still cool with what it is

  • good review, sorry to hear about your trouble with the gun, i plan to get this gun and hope mine will be trouble free.

  • @thehotsixer

I hope so to. It sucks having to send a new gun back. Not to mention I haven't even shot it yet.

  • In another Youtube video, they show that if you depress the slide the bushing comes off readily without the use of the wrench.

  • this remington looks pretty nice i'm looking to buy a 1911 i don't know witch one yet but it as to be something afortable i hope the remington is not to expensive let me know how it feels how it shoots i can't wait for the follow up again good looking gun as always great vid

  • @1stvibe

I will be sure keep you guys updated. I might be getting a new rock island 1911 from a buddy short on cash. So there might be a review in the near future for that.

  • Very well done. You covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time. I see a Remington R1 in my future.

  • Great vid!! I've been looking forward to this gun for quite a while, because of my location i have to buy it online.. have you heard of other people getting units with poor milling? or do you think it is an isolated case? Thanks

  • @zombieknifenut

When researching the only problems that I came across were faulty grip safeties. Remington is going to take care of me and I will be doing a follow up showing other small problems I have found. Thanks for the comment.
