What the hell has happened to Televised chess in the uk?!
Short Kasparov was the most addictive fantastic televised championship ever, and it was from the uk. Carol Vorderman, King presented really entertaining stuff to run alongside...
Well that all went!
Nothing at all now.
And they say there is no N.W.O. plan for dumbing down the population...
Yes, I got your point. My response was to say that people are no more intelligent when Short-Kasparov was televised than they are now. You asked "what happened to televised chess," right? Well, the answer is simply that there aren't British chess heroes to rally behind.
Unfortunately, human beings generally aren't intelligent (notice I said "generally"). This is true everywhere in the world (with some minor variations, granted). Television everywhere appeals to the lowest common factor.
Yes they were actually. A report from last year proved that in the UK - children are 2 years behind in intelligence compared to the same age group 30 yrs ago. So it`s likely that the dumbing down of the uk has indeed continued since short Kasparov.
Also - why do we 'need' to 'get behind' uk players? i like Kramnik Annand and so on. Lets leave it now.
I was watching Short play this morning on ICC. The members bantered about the game as it was played. Usually their comments are pretty stupid, but occasionally they are amusing.
Member 1: Hey, does anybody know how tall Short is?
Member 2: He is quite tall. Short is tall.
Member 3: Anyone know how short Tal is?
Member 2: Tal was short.
Member 1: So, Short is tall and Tal was short! Ha ha ha!

No. He's an awkward person. I have the original videos of his WCC match against Kasparov in 1993, as well as the Chess Life magazine series. I feel his play had real balls against a superior opponent.
He's actually got a lot better now he's older - he did used to be a tad weird it has to be said! But a wonderful player non the less -- it's nice to see him mature. He is indeed still a little nervous though.
@cosmat1000 children are 2 years behind in intelligence?? I find that hard to believe. Link me the "report"

i'm sure that if nigel nicked a can of spaghetti from sainsbury's or exposed himself in the street then chess would be back in the news lol

comsat, the amount of British televised chess depends on the amount of British chess talent!

Does not matter what nationality the players are. You miss the point.
We in the UK are deliberately kept away from any form of intelligent television.
if it does not involve running around with a ball, or if it requires any thought whatsoever then it`s not on tv. Full Stop.

The background noise is really awful, but it's interesting to hear Nigel Short's recollections. Has Nigel had a few glasses?
