  • fuck the Oscars its all about the you viewer awards yes he should get an Oscar

  • I believe that he should be nominated for something for all the amazing acting he has done. I bet acting like a ring addict is not easy, or being an ape, or a frickin' king of kong.

  • The Academy snobs won't give him the win, but they could possibly throw him a nomination since they've sporadically appreciated the best genre films in years past.

  • 1st of all it wasn't that great of a movie to begin with, not bad, but not great

2nd yes part of the credit would have to go to the animators

3rd His role as Gollum was a lot more ground breaking and emotional than Caesar

So no I wouldn't give him an Oscar Nod if I was a panelist, maybe an MTV Movie award nomination, but not Oscar worthy.

  • Yes

  • He's a great actor, he was THERE filming with the other actors... and the movie is pretty much all about him... He deserves an Oscar!

  • THE WHOLE WORLD IS TECHNOLOGICALLY MOVING FORWARD... IT'S TIME FOR THE OSCARS TO CATCH UP TECHNOLOGICALLY AND LOGICALLY! ANDY SERKIS DOES DESERVE AN OSCAR FOR ALL OF HIS WORK. MATTER OF FACT, THEY SHOULD GIVE HIM A LATE OSCAR FOR HIS EARLIER WORKS, AS WITHOUT HIM NONE OF THE BLOCKBUSTER HITS WOULD BE THE SAME. PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE TO GET DECEASED FOR THEIR WORK TO BE REALIZED. WE'RE IN A DIFFERENT ERA.... WE HAVE TO APPRECIATE OTHERS.

  • i really like the host. not only 'cause she's cute as a bug's ear; she's so much fresher than the typical shrill bimbo's on these entertainment youtube channels. keep it up, hon

  • Yes, he was amazing

  • To be fair to the guys at the computers SLAVING AWAY FOR YEARS after the actors act, what makes the performances so great is the teamwork and colaboration between the effects team and performers. The end product would be nothing compared to what it is without everyone on the top of their game. So unless they find it within themselves to give the best actor award to a group of people Serkis is still going to get robbed.

  • The Academy needs to create a new category called "Best Motion Captured Performance by a Male/Female". And the winner would be the actor as well as the animators involved in bringing that performance to life.

  • Andy serkis deserves best actor and i think rise of the planet of the apes deserves best picture

  • Andy Serkis truly deserves to win the Oscar absolutely for playing Caesar in Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, and he sure is a brilliant fantastic actor.

  • yes. yes! Yes! YES!

  • Most Definatley

  • Andy Serkins was robbed in the Lord of the Rings oscar win, he could at least get a nod this time, he deserves it!

  • The animators deserve an equal amount of recognition. It's such a new role that has spawned that Serkis is the only one getting the big jobs. Until there are numerous actors doing motion capture at the same scale and level, can we really say he is the best at what he does?

  • Yes, he should.

  • He sucks, he doesn't deserve a nomination.

  • I think he absolutely deserves a nomination! The animaters make the character's appearence and Andy has to do dialogue and thed motion i mean he's providing all the raw material! He totally got snubbed not getting nominated as gollum

  • When The Empire Strikes Back came out, George Lucas campaigned to get Frank Oz nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Yoda, but the Academy refused because "he's just a puppeteer!" But I think Frank Oz should have been nominated, pupeteer or not. And so should Andy Serkis! His performance as Caesar was breath taking! I don't care if someone is a puppeteer, motion capture artist, etc. if they give a great performance, they deserve to be recognized!

  • yesssss he should

  • Its madness how little credit he got as Gollum, not only did he do the motion capture for it, but he also voiced it.

  • andy serkis is probably gonna be robbed in this generation, thats how these things tend to go - the oscars, golden globes and all that tend to be a generation behind the general public. they will figure out in about 20 years, what we are all saying today.

  • @neothespian Well, i added that comment before I saw the behind the scenes, and must admit I was wrong. They could never have done that without the motion capture, not in that kind of detail the movie was made in. So, i stand corrected :)

  • Great show.

  • @SimbasGuardWT Thank you!

    - Grace

  • @BeyondTheTrailer You are very welcome.

  • I'm still shocked they didn't give it to him for gollum! he was beyond amazing in my opinion in that role. they can't stump him again! GIVE IT TO HIM!

  • to damn right he should get a oscare !!

  • when i first saw behind the scenes footage of the movie the first thing i thought was "that guy deserves an award"

  • The animators should get the award, because they could do it without an actor, but using an actor makes the whole thing a lot easier.

  • @torsrex96 If you honestly think all of that could be done without an actor, then you really don't understand how film works. Just seriously take a look at some of the behind the scenes work for his roles as Caesar and in Lord of The Rings. The "animation" is only one small part

  • @torsrex96 They absolutely CANNOT do it without him. Why bother using him, in the manner they do, at all then? Why mark his face with green dots so the computer can trace every single line of his facial muscle structure? Why wear the body suit so the computer can mark & mimic his PERFORMANCE? Why hire him at all if he wasn't the absolute BEST in the business? He deserves it. HANDS DOWN...

  • If he gets the Oscar, it will make the Academy seem relevant again.

  • haha, on reflection it seems obvious, but while watching the movie it didn't even occur to me that Cesar was played by an actor.

  • He deserves a nod for sure, maybe even the oscar.

  • I've never had much faith in the Oscars, and yet every year I hope that the members of the Academy will finally go out of their very, very, very old school parameters and respect film innovations (e.g. giving an animated film like Wall-E or Up a Best Picture). Sadly, they rarely come out of their box.

Andy Serkis deserves a Best Actor statue for his role as Cesar! If he doesn't get it, I won't be surprised. If he even gets a nod, though, I might develop hope in the future of film criticism.

  • I think that Serkis is a very smart man to embrace such a new technology. I think in a few years we'll be talking about him as the first actor to pioneer the art form, but it would be nice to see him win for the great work he's done.

  • he need to win,, hey grace have u seeen the cottage ,, he was great in it,,

  • Screw a nomination, he deserves a win

  • Who cares about he Oscars anymore, seriously, the Academy has over looked so many fantastic artists within their craft.

Hell to this day Christopher Nolan hasn't been nominated for any of work, yet he is one of the true filmmakers out there, who can entertain an audience on a massive scale.

If TDK grossed over a billion dollars without the need for 3D, while HP8, Avatar, TF3, Alice in wonderland (and to be honest all of them are ok films) grossed a billion $ because of jacked up ticket prices

  • if he simultaneously acted in mocap and as himself for the entirety of a movie the academy would STILL find an excuse to pass him over I'm sure

  • He played Caesar. That's all that needs to be said. Give this guy an award already!

  • After seeing so many embarrassingly bad motion capture performances there can be no doubt what Serkis brings so the screen. The man is a brilliant actor!

  • He should definenetly get an Oscar. For Best Animated Actor, including as Haddock

  • He hasn't got an Oscar yet?!?! He certainly deserves one!

  • Motion Capture not acting??

WTH?!!! it's must be even harder to do so!!! than normal acting!

  • Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar Oscar

  • Tough one is he really acting? What he does is fragmented and not a entire ensemble, wouldn't he be in the same category as a stunt man, they never receive Academy Awards,or do they? and his acting is really miming ,be it subtle for the camera lens,Hmmmm? perhaps a special Award for being a Pioneer in this field of film acting/making?

  • I think he should get it

  • I believe actors get way to much credit for their work. Most, if not all, of the credit needs to go to the writers, directors, and editors. Even the most talented of actors have to admit that they are nothing without them.

  • @theylied1776 Well, the actor isn't "nothing without them" but, your right to say that the writers, directors ect need to be recognized more. It's a complete marriage of skills.

  • @whitewolfwithblackSP Without a written script, a directors interpretation of that script to the actor, and a talented editor to make sense of the story in post production; the actor is little more than living clay. I'm not imlpying that there aren't talented actors, but... the true talent is behind the camera.

  • i think he deserves it but he wont really dont trust the oscars anymore

  • He deserves 1

  • Andi Serkis has even done motion capture for video games and lent his image as well. Heavenly Sword & Enslaved: Odyssey to the West are just a few to name. ;)

  • the man deserves one

  • With all due respect to the digital animators, Andy is the one who breathes life, heart, and soul into his characters. He should definitely get some recognition. I know I have all the respect in the world for him. He and Doug Jones are two sides of the same coin if you ask me. I think they're both incredible. :)

  • Serkis should get it

  • He def deserves s nod of not a win 4 blazing a trail where no 1 has been before.

  • Yes, of he deserves a nomination. Who else can get into character as an ape! His slow transfer from more ap to more human was straight out amazing!

  • the getter give him a nod, his performance of gollum was incredible an unmatched, something that will be remembered for ever. however his role of cesear was amazing too, almost as good. just give it tooo him.

  • Yes thank you!! Finally someone who gives us THEIR opinion! lol love your shirt too btw XD

yes I do beleive Andy should recieve an oscar nom for Caesar in ROTPOTA... He's captivated so many with his performances and he is the true definition of "actor". If he doesn't? Well, let's just say that I will no longer watch the oscars, for, if they can't recognize great talent, they certainly don't have the ability to judge anything for ANY film.

  • He truly deserves it! Now maybe the others competitors deserve it too...

  • SERKIS NEEDS A NOMINATION! The Apes in Rise of the Planet of the Apes felt so real, and based on the way the audience connected with Caesar, he deserves a nod.

  • No! He should at least get a nomination.

  • Of course a big part of a motion capture performance is the animation that goes with it. But so do the make-up artists that transform a character. Give Andy an Oscar!

  • As much as I'd love for him to get the Oscar, I'm sure the academy will simply look it over.

  • Two things: Grace, I want that shirt, also, this is the United States of Assholes, the academy will take pleasure in not recognizing Andy Serkis, just because he does motion capture, in the same way that Toy Story 3 was not taken seriously as a contender for best picture, only best animated feature. This is why the YouReviewers Movie Awards was made, to give credit wehere credit is due, even if it's not from 'Murica.

  • Andy deserves one for sure! he's a fantastic actor.

  • Grace this is why I love you and your show :) Thank you for raising up this topic. I've seen alot of movies this year, and not only is Rise of the Planet of the Apes my favorite of the year, but Andy Serkis portrayal of Caesar is my favorite performance of the year. In fact he is the movie. Personally Andy deserves more respect than a normal actor, for making us care and get emotionally attached to a cgi character.

  • Without knowing, personally, where the acting stops and the animation begins visa-versa its a tough call, but it does raise an interesting point. The academy shouldn't be so quick to judge & they should re-evaluate the criteria required for a nomination.

  • Serkis is the only man on the planet that can act as a giant gorilla, a mutated midget, and a chimp that starts to take over the world... and do it so well you think that they are real. I say give him the Oscar!

  • It may be digital in the end, but he gave them the motion and emotion that they needed in the end. YES! He deserves it!

  • Serkis deserves more!

  • If there was no Serkis, the animators would have nothing to work with. Give the man some credit!

  • if of any of his past and current roles, he most deserves an oscar for rise. but, knowing the academy, chances are he wont get any credit. i think we can all agree that he truly deserves one.

  • He deserves a nomination

  • he was so great

  • please he needs one

  • I felt more for an ape this year than any other character this year, Andy deserves it. While yes, the animators play a big part too, Andy makes it easier and puts less stress on the animators since they now have a template to work with. Don't miss another great actor Academy

  • He Absolutely Deserves To Be Recognized. His Performance In Every Single Role Has Been Outstanding And Brought To Life Through His Skill, Not A CGI Artist. I Have Been Waiting A Long Time To See Him Win.

  • He didn’t act in the movie, so shouldn’t win. Quite simple. Doesn’t mean he isn’t a hard worker and good actor any way, its just the differences between make up and cgi are too substantial for the 2 to even be compared. 1 requires acting, the other requires a large team of computer specialist with large amounts of money to give the appearance of acting.

  • @nightseifer he didn't act, are you serious? In planet of the apes for example he does all the movement and the facial expressions etc. He is acting, yeah they put another cgi body over him, but that doesn't mean that the computer is what makes the creatures act the way they do in the movies, he does it. Andy definetely deserves a nomination.

  • @superotakushow

Nope. You are wrong on too many levels.

  • @nightseifer Just watch the video grace recommended. Don't let the tools an artist use distract you from the performance.

speaking as an visual artist, most people assume that painting digitally requires no skill(they just assume theres a button that says "auto-paint" or something) but it's all me; my sense of form, my sense of lighting, my sense of composition, even my knowledge of real life paints, not the computer.

  • must get 1 hands down

  • well, the animators did play a important role in the creation of gollum, mainly because facial motion capture wasn't used that much. However, that has changed now and Serkis DEFINITELY deserves an oscar for what he did with those characters. :)

  • Not only does Serkis deserve a nomination, he also deserves a win! Or at the very least to pioneer a brand new category.

  • The motion actors are great but the animators play a huge role, especially in the eyes where the acting really counts. The problem with these animation performances is that if they win it would be a huge insult to the live action actors. If anything they should get their own category at the Oscars.

  • he should win. if he doesnt get nominated then theres something wrong with the academy

  • Will the academy overlook him again? Well from the mouth of Caesar himself, "NO!"

  • Andy Serkis is the best with motion capture. He is awesome.

  • Go, Serkis, go!

  • Why not just make a new oscar for digital character, which could be awarded to both the actor of the character and the graphic team that bring it to life.

  • if Mr Serkis are nominated for an Oscar, I guess must be nominated for at less 2 oscar the peoples have makes:

    Model

    Animation

    Cleanup tangents

    Facial Animation

    Hairs and particular system

    Lighting and shading

    compositing

The mocap are more complex then you can think...a team of peoples must follow the actor to make believable his performance, so this nomination are really a confirmation about the ignorance of the peoples about the animation process...

  • I think that the problem is that you do have a team of animators cleaning up the motion capture scenes.. so in a way is hard to tell where's that line marked.. when does the performance ends and the animator starts.. being that said.. I do think he deserves at least a nomination

  • P.S. love that T-shirt Grace! haha so great! =D

  • He should totally be GIVEN the Oscar for that role, as well as for all the others since LoTR! =) The guy's truly skilled. Pure excellence, plain and simple! =) He also did some fantastic acting and VO Work for the BEAUTIFUL and totally underrated (but awesome) video game "Enslaved." The dude deserves the award -Seriously. The Academy's gotta stop loving the smell of their own farts ;P (they're getting predictable & running the risk becoming much less respected) & give honor where honor is due.

  • He deserves a nomination! Not an Oscar! However, this is the year for Christopher Plummer as Grace said before! And I don't know if Serkis will even get nominated considering that both the Golden Globes and the SAG Didn't give him a nomination! :( PS Hey Grace! You should do a movie byte on all the Guild Awards if you get the chance please! :D

  • Yea he does deserve an oscar because his facial expressions and physical movements help make his character believable and as well likable

  • serkis deserves an oscar nomination. his performance in Rise of the Planet of the Apes was so heart-wrenching to watch.

  • He brings SO MUCH to his characters. He absolutely deserves a win. Watching a side by side comparison of him as Gollum and then with the CG layered over him was incredible to see. It really is all him, the muscles, the expressions.... I adore him.

  • It would be amazing for it to happen for the precedent to be set alone, but it would also cement him as one of the best working actors out there. The Oscars have kind of lost credibility though. I don't think that many people take industry awards that seriously, the general public anyway. I haven't actually watched the Oscars in years.

  • I believe he does deserve an Oscar (or 5), but the powers that be have stated publicly that they believe the animators deserve it more as it's their work you are seeing, not an actor's. So until there is a change of power in the Acadamy, I doubt he will be taking home the prize this year.

And personally, even though I love Apes, I thought his best work was in King Kong.

  • if andy serkis doesnt get a nomination, then i will have NO MORE HOPE IN HOLLYWOOD

  • Yes I want him to get a nomination and WIN!

  • He does deserve an award.... but the judges are suckers for "real life drama"... expect 'The Help' sweep the oscars this time... but being from animation background and seeing what film makers have achieved ... he has already got an oscar ... who cares about a golden (plated) statue.

  • i wouldn't mind seeing him get nominated but i wouldn't want to see him win. he's kind of like a puppeteer except he's not really the only one bringing those characters to life. computer animators do just as much, if not more to bring those characters to life. maybe instead of getting an award as an actor, the academy should create a new award that would recognize the people that do this particular style of performance.

  • There's only so much the animator can do, but the actor is the foundation of which everything else is built upon in terms of makeup, speical effects and movement. The animation is a digital costume for the actor.

  • Andy Serkis should get nominated because he is a good actor . I do think in motion capture it´s a team job between the animator and the actor, but it´s like the Film editors, they get the best performance out so many actors by cutting and pasting.

  • i hope he does hes performance was awesome

  • just watched it for the first time today. I'm usually more into the artsy movies but it was great.

  • Absolutely! he is more deserving of the Oscar than any other actor who is being considered for nomination. One thing that I've been wondering is if he learned sign language for the role as well.

  • i'm really pullin that serkis does get an osscur or something yeesh Hollywood has gone ape shit

  • I say give Serkis a nomination, because even though the animation for Caesar was great, the character would have been soulless had it not been for Serkis' performance.

  • There is no doubt Serkis does very fine work.

Will it be acknowledged ? I hope so...

  • at 0:07 dos Cesar have a 1 or a y one his chest

  • Nomination-yes win-no I think George Valentin from the artist deserves best win

  • Actors wearing make-up and costumes get nominated for Oscars, so what's the difference with motion capture? Also anyone can read lines but it takes a brilliant actor to have virtually no dialogue and still be captivating like Ceasor

  • HELL YEAH he deserves and oscar!!!!!!

  • I love you Grace!!!!!!! I'm going to marry you one day you see.lol

  • while i think he should get a nomination, i have a feeling he is going to be ignored. maybe in 5 years when we have newer people he might get recognized, but at this point i doubt it.

  • The animators are very important, but the greatest key frame animator in the world wouldn't be able to capture the subtlety or personality an actor brings to the plate. Like Gollum in LOTR, these characters couldn't be done half as effectively without the actors.

  • SERKIS FTW

  • even though serkis might not get the academy recognition, he will get ours

  • @N65OOS and the YouReviewers awards

  • no not a nomination a win he was brilliant in this movie. he acted amazingly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I hope he gets the nom and wins. That's the perfect shirt for this video!

  • Give him his precious!!!!!! He wants it!!

  • NOMINATE HIM! FOR THE NOMS!!

  • give andy a precious

  • @vietvipp you made me lmfao!!!

  • The fact that you mentioned Lon Chaney makes me want to give you a huge hug.

  • AMEN, GIRL! You are so fucking right. He so does deserve one. Motion capture or make up? What is the difference. It's still an actor in a role. Totally qualifies! His performance was amazing in that film. but knowing how the Acadamy works, it's a stretch...but it better not be!!!

  • I just find it ironic how we talk about Academy snubs while you're wearing a shirt saying 'Haters Gonna Hate.'

  • As brilliant as he is, I'm just a little grouchy about any big mainstream movie getting Oscar nominations when Harry Potter is just being beaten out of the discussion.

  • We say yes. Sure, animators can draw together some creature, but to give real expressions, and not even see your face doing it, would be difficult in it's own.

  • Hell ya. Andy Serkis is amazing.

  • Forget the nomination, he needs to win!

  • He definitely deserves it but he'll be snubbed unfortunately. :(

  • he deserves at least a nomination.

  • the academy is usually a few years behind fans but I'm sure if he doesn't win one here he'll probably get one for hobbit! he's still playing Gollum right?

  • him and all the animators should be recognied. I wanna be an animator and think that both sides should be recognized.

  • Yes nominate Serkis!!

  • He shouldn't get nominated.

    HE SHOULD WIN

  • That guys awesome! I'll be sad if he doesn't get nominated.

  • HE WAS AMAZING. WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE. WHATTHEFUCK

  • LOL love the shirt. You make the best vids...

  • Yes, Serkis was amazing as Caesar. Some of the best scenes in the movie were of just Caesar and the look on his face. He didn't have to say a word, his emotion was crystal clear and flawless. That movie was awesome and one of my favorites of the year, I hope it gets a lot of awards come award season.

  • thers no link to the behind the sence

  • @PablouThePeguin Just posted it! Sorry for the delay!

    - Grace

  • He's actually a great on-screen actor as well! I loved seeing him in the Prestige--one of my all time favorite movies :)

  • The animators may make the character on screen but it's the actors that bring the character to life. Andy Serkis deserves this oscar. Hands down.

  • His performance as Cesar was epic. It really does not matter if he wins the oscar or not. It does not change the fact that he had one of if not the best roles of the year. Besides, the oscars lost street cred a loooonnnngggggg time ago (I'm looking at you Sandra Bullock/The Blind Side)...

  • he better get a nomination

  • He really needs to get nominated.

  • yeah, its true Grace; haters gonna hate.

  • He really should win for that performance. The academy really needs to reevaluate some of the nominations.

  • @TheTrinity848 no way! motion capture data just makes up half the performance. The animation has to be tweaked a great deal before it goes to the big screen. so andy does not deserve full credit for Caesar at all.

  • Hell yes! I'm hoping he wins this Oscar because he did AMAZING in The Rise of the Planet of the Apes! I know he got ignored for Gollum, but next year since The Hobbit comes out, he will do outstanding as usual and at least win an Oscar either this year or next.

  • Serkis is truly a badass. Hope the academy opens their eyes and recognizes this formally

  • i think he should win

  • Wow

  • nice job Grace
