  • I love the whole symphony, but that introduction to the second part is really quite something special. The entrance of the choir is really well done here, but I've got to say that I had the chance of seeing the symphony live in Berlin with Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic... and, well, nothin against our NYO, but Berlin was really magic. Unbelievable, I'd never thought that such outstanding beauty is achievable by human beings...

when the choir enters really raises goosebumps on my arms...

  • le son suit pas l'image…

  • That conducter has AWESOME hair!!!

  • oh, yeap. Now i found out. His name's John Relyea and actually he's a Bass-Baritone, my mistake. He's really handsome! ;)

  • @VelvetCat1

He is Canadian. Son of another wonderful bass baritone -- Gary Relyea. Yes, both are extremely handsome -- like father, like son. And both really, really NICE people.

  • Thanks for the info! I've been doing some research about him and he's indeed quite handsome and talented too, just like John. I loved his Rangoni in 'Boris Godunov'. Greetings! ;)

  • Does someone know who this Baritone is? I'd love to know some more about him

  • I don't want to sound rude or anything, but the combination of Japanese subtitles and the synchro problem reminds me of every bad anime that I've ever seen (which would be just about every anime I've ever seen, heheh).

  • here's the solution - wash your ears and try listening

  • I'm terribly sorry, but that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I have been listening to this, I am a musician myself.

  • didn't mean to insult you. my comment makes sense if you agree music is about listening and not about spectacle or subtitles

  • Ah, okay then. Just a misunderstanding then, typical Intertubes difficulty. While it would be better if I could watch and listen without being terribly confused and/or giggling, it is still a wonderful recording.

  • yes - it's less than perfect technology. yes it is a wonderful recording. thanks for your Bruckner 4 video that i note is in pretty good synch and i'm sure i'll enjoy watching as well as listening. peace

  • You're certainly welcome. Of course, I was able to see this live by the CSO at Ravinia, so it's not quite a comparison, but still...

  • Partial Text of the Second Soloist: PATER PROFUNDUS (deep region) As the rocky chasm at my feet On the deep abyss weighs at rest, As a thousand gleaming streams flow To the terrible plunge of the flood's foam, As with its own great strength The trunk is born up into the air - So is almighty Love That forms all, preserves all. There is about me a wild rushing, As if forest and rocky ground shook,

  • Test translation for the first soloist (since people below were complaining) PATER ECSTATICUS (floating above and below) Eternal burning brand, Glowing bond of Love, Seething pain of the breast, Foaming joy of God. Arrows, pierce me, Lances, subdue me, Maces, beat me down, Lightning thunder through me! That now the worthless Be cursed for ever Shine forth the enduring star, Eternal Love's centre.

  • Rattle's bizarre rubato and overly fast tempos in all of his conducting in recent decades drives me nuts at times. But the soloists more than overcompensate for that here. Plus these kids just play their hearts out. I think Mahler himself would have been most moved by this.

  • Premisse to Karmina Burana Carmina ecclesiastica

  • sigh... It seems that I can never appreciate the choirs..... especially when its sang in a foreign language and I have to look at lyrics.
