Unfortunately, America's popular culture will never be able to pen an uplifting anthem to raise us up again. We can all feel that it's over; the U.S. is going down for the last time. To be an "American" will feel dirty and slimy in that day.

But when Germany was reunited the East German anthem was replaced by the anthem of the West Germans in the former East.

In this year the germans demonstrat and fight in a revolution for the national unity and for human and civil rights! the first stanza "germany above all" dont mean that germany is superior to other states! its only means, that the german unit must be the first for every german and that ONE unitet Germany is more important than the 30 german countrys! you know nothing whatsoever about the german anthem!
so yeah, like you said this was 1841 when there was place for nationalist ideology. but at least after the time of the nazi regime we should have come to realize that there is no need for such ideologies anymore.
The original meaning was "Germany is more important than the regions it's made up from", not "Germany should rule over all other countries".
The former was actually a bit ... liberal, at the time: The idea of putting aside old fights and creating a modern new country was more of a left-side project, as I've understood it.
Of course, the nazis did add another layer of meaning to that ... but read through the current lyrics before you continue.
@defythelaw41 The DDR was a lot better than the 3rd Reich ever was!! It was more positive than the other Germanies in history that have been so negative, including the current state that has done some pretty nasty things secretly despite the nazi ban.
@pyramidheadkitten9 the stasi had its flaws but it at least kept order. the berlin wall sadly was a mistake and the mass starvation, that's north korea actually.
@slimv29 I have lived under both regimes, Hitler and the DDR. I agree with you completely. Between the two, there is no contest. The DDR was a far better cultural and humanistic place than the Führer's terrible "Reich."

It has uncredible rithym, melodic sequence and passion.this and the USSR are definitely the best and most heartbreaking.
I am not a german and i love music much more than politics.When I hear those 2 anthems, I get a real kick inside and may leave a cry or two
