  • It's amazing how much Hollywood (avatar) copied this movie. .

  • @nagasako7

    no, avatar copied Pocahontas

  • @nagasako7 Not only did it copy off fantastic movies like this, but it was done poorly as well. Avatar had a bunch of useless, undeveloped, stereotypical characters. Even the great CGI doesn't save it. I'll take the beautiful animation and storytelling of Miyazaki's films(and Hisaishi's magical score..) over all the hollywood crap being chucked out these days.

  • @OmegaOwA i could not agree more with you. :)

  • who's complaining about the english dub? i think that this one had the best dub out of all of miyazaki's films.

  • @mustacheroller english dub is garbage, everyone that thinks its good is a lazy, fat ass guy

  • @Mudux I agree I found the dub very lacking. And its regarded as one of the best of all time so that's saying stuff. But I find Claire Daines' voice very sexy in a guilty way lol

  • @kickodude

Billy Crudup was arguably a better voice actor than Yoji Matsuda, but I did find some of the English dub choices to be rather odd, like friggin Billy Bob Thornton and Minnie Driver... very out of place and annoying.

  • Happy birthday Mr. Miyazaki!

  • The first time I saw the movie , I WAS CREEPT OUT .

    Now , I'm fine .

    (Not really)

  • great movie

  • co ja pacze...

  • The dubbing for Mononoke Hime is actually pretty good. There has been MUCH worse.

  • If anyone ever see Miyazaki's animations, you will love everyone one of them.

  • It is true that humans are stupid and ignorant, but what every one of them tries to find what is right, but that has become difficult, politics, opinion, greed.all a part of ones determination.

Basically what im saying is. Find the truth, but dont be stubborn

  • The best part of San isn't that she's a "beautiful lady." The best part is that she KICKS ASS!

  • In my OPINION, the Japanese audio with subs is far more enjoyable to watch than a version with english-speaking samurais. I live in Poland, and here we are used to subtitles. I just can't enjoy the movie as much if the characters are speaking in "american". It just breaks the mood. And this is not just for Japanese movies: I hate it when movies in english are dubbed in Polish. Original language wins!

  • @CleverDjembe WoW, my comment got copied. I have to say, I am honoured:D

  • @RarFafr

I didn't mean to copy you. I just wanted to say the exact same thing, because I agree with you :)

  • DON'T WATCH THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE FIRST!

  • 1:45 the grudge? xD

  • THANKS FOR SHOWING THE ENDING IN YOUR REVIEW YOU FUCKING PRICK

  • @IFknHateUTube Reviewing a movie or book involves watching/reading the whole thing and reviewing in in whole.

  • @VKFan42 doesn't involve spoiling the end for everyone. You can talk about it in general terms but to show the fucking thing burning down just ruins it.

  • @IFknHateUTube I guess they could have done that but a lot of reviewers do that. Ever heard of That Guy with the Glasses or Phelous? They show the end when they review.

  • @IFknHateUTube thank u for pointing tht out i almost watched it

  • i liked all the dub casts except Princess Mononoke's - - ....i'm sorry they should've picked someone better for the MAIN character! made her sound like an obnoxious, snob know-it-all teenager...hated it so much i had to re-watch it in japanese...

  • @aiayumi she is until she gets to know ashitaka.

  • Actually, the dub isn't that bad. I prefer the dub of Hayao Miyazaki's movies over the subbed and I thought I was a hard-core sub fan

  • survive. but miyzakis film also takes a longer view which is that eventually this cycle will end and it can only end one way....."

  • short-sighted. and the enchanted creatures of the forest the spirits that are so magical and beautiful and noble are also monstrous. now this allegorical struggle between the human civilization and the natural world is not one that can be resolved with a clear victory for either side. and their is a somewhat hopeful conclusion.. its that this relationship is a cycle, human beings can learn how to manage their antagonism with nature in such a way that both civilization and the natural world can

  • I remember the first time I saw Princess Mononoke, I was like, wake up people, think about our nature, our home that each and everyone of us lives in, be good to one another and be good to our nature which is our home

  • right on

  • Not too many people even attempt to argue my points, it is pointless. My claims are logically thought out and objectively sound. This is why youtube commenter indirectly respond to my statements. Isn't that right @RarFafr Dubs win! for who?

What is the point of this boasting, I'll tell you, people want to be right even if they have to make irrational or logically inconsistent claims. "In my OPINION" Dubs win!

  • @Yallno22 You said: "I'll tell you, people want to be right even if they have to make irrational or logically inconsistent claims." Irrational claims?! They are called opinions, have you ever heard of those? I don't need to make any rational arguments to protect my opinions. You are trying to win an already lost battle here, my friend. I respect your opinion, why can't you respect mine?

  • Comment removed

  • @RarFafr Yes! I respect the intellectual opinions of others but not when people generalize their claims as absolutes, that everyone believes. "Original language wins!" is not an opinion as it's stated. You're ether in denial of the facts or you're oblivious to your own psychological fallacies. Most rational people reading this statement will agree with me. There is no battle to be won. The outcome is already known.

  • @Yallno22 if miyazaki films do not speak through their images to you then you don't understand the films. i only watch the original version because that's how it was intended to be seen and most dubbing is for people who cannot get into the story without some noise that is the spoken word. Animated features speak through images and language is not a barrier to understanding this film, hence no need for dubbing.

  • it is an extrordinaily excellent source for TOEFL test takers to practice our listening !! AWESOME

  • In my OPINION, the Japanese audio with subs is far more enjoyable to watch than a version with english-speaking samurais. I live in Finland, and here we are used to subtitles. I just can't enjoy the movie as much if the characters are speaking in "american". It just breaks the mood. And this is not just for Japanese movies: I hate it when movies in english are dubbed in Finnish. Original language wins!

  • @RarFafr IT'S TRUE! whereas ppl in the states regards all languages should be translated to the present lingua franca-- English... Origial sub and accents is the only way of exhibiting local specialties and cultural traits. BTW, I love finland lol

  • The kodama are like living baubleheads!!

  • its a kodama!!!!!! they are so adorible! i want one and place it in my forest!!!!!!!!!

  • its a gudoma!!!!!! they are so adorible! i want one and place it in my forest!!!!!!!!!

  • 0:21 omg they are so adorable ! :) i love them!

  • How irrational is the claim of not liking english or other language dubs, for anime, when you can't understand or appreciate the anime, in it's original language. What's that you say "subs" Please just stop with the buffoonery, they take away, attention and immersion from the movie. Just appreciate the fact, that foreign anime can be enjoyed worldwide by many races through the application of dubs.

  • @Yallno22 There are many reasons why someone might prefer a sub to a dub. Poor voice acting and bad lip synching can really bring down the value of an anime, for example. Listening to the cadence of the original language can be fascinating. Also, interesting cultural differences (for example, Ashitaka's voice is deeper in the American version) can be great to observe. And subs are often used as a language aid.

Am I a buffoon? Why? Your disapproval hasn't convinced me--quite the opposite.

  • @fanficbug Well, I should have made it clear in my previous statement, I'm not knocking the usefulness of subs, My argument was the fallible claims, that I've read on youtube and the internet. which employ the general fallacy of all english dubs being terrible. Liking or disliking a dub is a subjective matter made by each individual. Also, the foreign language and grammatical inflections of a foreign anime is useless to me, if I can't understand it. "No need to convinced you-quite the opposite."

  • @Yallno22 I just look at it this way- the original director made a movie in that language and therefore it is intended to be watched in that language. Not to mention that watching a film in its original language sets the mood right and makes you realise that you're watching something created by people of another culture.

  • @FetaCheese222 "a film in its original language sets the mood right"

This claim, implies that an english dub, can not set the mood right or spark, emotional immersion.

"you're watching something created by people of another culture."

This statement contradicts your initial claim. "the original director made a movie in that language and therefore it is intended to be watched in that language."

There are many things, that societies use, that was not intended for them. Clothes, technology ..etc

  • @Yallno22 What? How do they contradict? The director made it in Japanese. He is a Japanese person, from a Japanese culture.

  • @FetaCheese222 "the original director made a movie in that language and therefore it is intended to be watched in (that language)."

" watching a film in its original language sets the mood right and makes you realise that (you're watching) something created by people of (another culture)."

If you say that, "it is intended to be watched in (that language)." Then say that, "(you're watching) something created by people of (another culture)." "(another) culture." Equates to a contradiction.

  • @Yallno22 I meant "another" as a different culture from your own.

  • @FetaCheese222 You still don't get it, you are oblivious to the contradiction in your statment.

"Not to mention that watching a film in its original language sets the mood right and makes you realise that you're watching something created by people of another culture"

You know, there's nothing like that good old home cooked food that calms the nerves and makes you realize your eating something created by people of another, different, house, culture from my own.

  • @Yallno22 Okay, clearly own brains are operating on far-too different wavelengths. Let's just agree to diagree, because I'm not making any sense to you and you're not making any sense to me.

  • @FetaCheese222

Yes, nothing sets the mood like the barely audible Japanese dialogue on my DVD. Add the noticeably weaker music behind the audio track ( a foolish use of quality recording time THEY PAID FOR with the orchestra), and keep in mind that most western peons will be READING subtitles (definitely NOT part of the experience for Japanese people) and I'd say you got yourself an award-winning performance. I, for one, have enough respect to watch it IN ENGLISH.

  • @sikyatavo Weaker? I'm pretty sure it's just quieter. Use the volume knob. :|

  • @fanficbug: Amen! I felt that way about "Naruto". So much is lost when something like this is translated into English. The performances by the original voice actors can sometimes be far more powerful than an English dub, which had to be re-worded to fit the character's mouth movements. I had seen the fan sub's for Naruto long before the English language version aired. When I tried to watch the English version, I couldn't help but cringe at how bad it turned out in comparison.

  • the commercials are so cool on youtube, dead ass

  • People need to stop hating on the dub.

Miyazaki likes the dubs of his films. They put in lots of effort into making them.

  • @naruhina1236918

the dubs on this are well done

  • @naruhina1236918 Absolutely. If Miyazaki thinks the dubs for all his movies that Disney has done are great, then who are these naysayers to say that Disney has destroyed them? IMO, Disney has done anything but ruin them. Yes, they do add in lines and music in some of their dubs and occasionally make eccentric casting choices, but that in no way means that their dubs are bad. Not in any way. I just can't watch them in Japanese anymore because the dubs are so amazing. This one included.

  • @Turnajon This film was dubbed by miramax and I think they did a great job especially compared to disney, which is a much larger company.

  • I think the film looses a lot of its magic in english. The creatures voices with their strange Japanese dialect is haunting and memorable. Particularly the Boars and the Monkeys.

  • @Kalferzu you suck.

the german dub for example is goddamn good (btw. they use the original japanese soundtrack(with vocals))

  • yee basterds could stop flaming each other..... shut the fuck up and enjoy

  • In the past year, preliminary video commercials on youtube has gone up 67%.

But there is something you can do about it.

  • I don't know why, but this moive confirms that Miyazaki is sort of like the next JRR Tolkien in the sense that in their works they try to capture the good essence of nature. Let's just say they do it better than Al Gore =P

  • hayao's movies are nothing without joe hisaishi's music!

  • I put this film on for my younger cousins (aged 7,9 and 10). They absolutely loved it. Powerful storytelling, beautiful imagery, such a breath of fresh air compared to the brash, jibing pop culture stews being released by Disney and Dreamworks at the moment.

  • Love how Scott butcher's Mononoke's name in this vid XD

  • Both Miyazaki and Hisaishi are of a dying breed of artists. It's a real shame, because practically everything they touch is gold.

  • Did anyone else think Okami had a very similar soundtrack to the film?

  • I watched this after My Neighbour Totoro. A lot more violent than I expected, but still another Miyazaki masterpiece.

  • Fuck the english dub!

  • @pyramidhead007 No, fuck you. The English dub is actually very well done in this film. The US voice actors miss a few of the subtleties of the original Japanese, but the subtitled version is there on the DVD as well, so...

  • @rss313 wow! a simple thumbs down would've worked.

  • Great movie

  • This movie was uber gory, I remember.

  • @degree7 no, it wasn't

  • @degree7 not really. A person got decapitated by an arrow and two people got de-armed. A few people and spirits died/got shot, but there wasn't anything too bad.

  • @degree7 It was a bit more gory than expected. But it wasn't "uber" gory as you claim. It was actually quite subtle in the gore department. A couple of beheading by arrow, some disarmament, some guns and explosions. Quite nerf in comparison to shows like Shikabane-hime and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

  • BEST. MOVIE. EVER.

    .

    That is all.

  • My Favorite Movie.

  • @nohshinto Haha. then who is permitted to review his work? Someone native to japan, amiright?

    yumadtho?

    lawl. faggot.

  • This review came out 10 years after the movie... isn't that kind of late?

  • @meepfeet it's never too late to recognize greatness

  • @mania66107 True...

  • epic movie

  • Couldn't have done it without the help of Joe Hisaishi's music

  • @Danphansae and Oga Kazuo's paintings :)

  • My favorite Miyazaki film next to Spirited Away and Naussica and the Valley of the Wind!

  • one of the greatest film makers? nope, he's THE GREATEST! :)

  • this movie is truly beautiful

no doubt one of the best !

  • I remember when I once saw this movie a few years back. I could never remember the name.

And one day, I came across one of Miyasaki's film and saw "Princess Mononoke" listed, and it dawned on me that this was the title.

To this day it remains a favorite :)

  • meaning is not "preachiness"

the characters are not good or evil: you sympathize with all, even jigo. all the characters are so justified. it's about thinking about the consequences.

  • hayao miyazaki + joe hisaishi always equals pure win

  • 66666th viewer :)

  • I remember seeing this when I was about 4-5 years of age. I remember sitting in my living room during the summer and my mom actaully yelled at me because all I did was sit on the couch and watch this movie over and over again. I started liking Miyazaki and Wolves are now my favorite animal, haha. we had rented the movie and I couldn't remember what it was called so everytime we went to blockbuster, I'd ask my dad, "Do you remember the wolf princess movie? can we get that?" haha I own it now :)

  • this is such a terrific movie <

i love it so much.ive seen it a bajillion times along with Miyazakis other movies<3

    hes just so amazing.

  • i was up all last night. this movie came on about 5 ish i think. i was extremely tired but it was to good to not watch. i loved it.

  • thump up avatar was inspire by this anime movie

  • @MrHmoobhtt No :T No it wasn't.

  • @MrHmoobhtt No, I think Avatar's story is just a story that has been recycled over and over again to the point when it can be said that the plot was inspired by almost anything, especially Disney's Pocahontas when the only real requirement to make the two complete copies of each other is simply changing the names and one or two nouns.

In this though, it is actually quite different because the main character tries to mediate the two forces that are clashing, not eliminate the evil one of them.

  • @TobyBDK thank you!! Well said!

  • You know he took 17 years to create the storyline. I love ashitaka. You pronounced Mononoke wrong btw. But everything you said was correct

  • This is the best movie EVER. Such a beautiful movie with deep meaning about life. This movie could change lives. If only everyone in the world would watch it.

  • wow they did it at the year i was born :D

  • I believe there was a tribute to this film in Hellboy2, is it true?

  • Am I the only one who thinks this is the best film of the 90s?

  • Cameron made his avatar characters either mindlessly evil or mindlessly good, and the movie was also ridiculously blatant in it's preachiness. Miyazaki sent the same message but in a caring and actually effective way that doesn't come off as a teenage-level war protest.

  • @capnfoo

Indeed I've noticed in MANY Miyazaki movies, the villain is never really ever COMPLETELY evil.

  • @capnfoo There is a "message" and "characters" in Avatar ? I thought it was just pretty pictures and CGI action... did i miss something ? :)

It is very true that the characters in Mononoke are complex, and most of them range all over this gray spectrum of morals.

  • @capnfoo I love you, man.

  • @capnfoo whats with everyone bashing avatar all the time, so many people dont give a shit about movie critics as they go see every fucking film no matter how bad it was actually rated, and then they start bashing Avatar to show off. Dont get me wrong , its not against you, and I love princess Mononoke, (I love Studio Ghibli) but Avatar is still a good film.

  • @keenis I was taking part in an already-on-going a comparative discussion........................

  • @keenis I don't see anything wrong with taking part in an ongoing, comparative discussion. The two movies are all sorts of similar, people aren't pulling reasons to compare them out of thin air.

  • @capnfoo Im not against comparison when its well argumented, (which youtube doesnt allow us with only 500 letters to write in a comment). But when I see people write "blabla avatar is only cgi effects" (TheIncrediblyGodzy) it angers me, I have the impression that everyone is writing negatively about Avatar just because it was the most succesfull movie ever made. For reasons of self proclamation. If you actually really do think about movies and can compare them in detail, then I have no problem.

  • @keenis I felt the way I did because after seeing it twice in theaters (because I liked the effects) it was annoying to have to cringe through half the lines. Barely any characters had any change of character, and ones like Jake and the girl pilot couldn't act like they were bad when they were supposed to (the whole first half).

  • @capnfoo that is the nature of any hollywood blockbuster

  • @capnfoo I don't believe there is meant to be good or evil in princess Mononoke, they're just meant to be human. I think that's what Miyazaki is trying to say... could be wrong though.

  • @capnfoo i think cameron just wants money....lol

  • @capnfoo and this film was released in 1997! =)

  • @jopastico 1997 isn't very old when you consider the history of film. There are movie that deal with war that are far more complex than Mononoke that are over 50 years old.

  • The Forest Spirits were adorable!

  • what are those little white people? I know they say it in the movie, but I forgot. could anyone tell me? I really love this movie, but in my opinion, I like castle in the sky better.

  • @MegaColton10 The Forest Spirits.

  • what are those little white people? I know they say it in the movie, but I forgot. could anyone tell me?

  • @MegaColton10 Kodama's!

  • Beatiful animation, amazing composer( Joe Hisaishi), top notch voice actors, intriguing storyline and characters...what more could we ask for?

  • You forgot to mention the sheet music, from Joe Hisaishi, whose tender notes enrich the movie, but, alone, even for the people who haven`t seen 'Princess Mononoke" have the same effect, as on those who know the story.

  • great movie

  • I love everything about this movie. The art is enchanting, the story is beautiful, the music is unbeleaveable, and the depth of the characters is amazing. <3

  • @MUSICisLIFE1429

it isnt a disney movie AT ALL

  • @MUSICisLIFE1429 its not disney's..it's studio ghibli's...disney only the distributor in U.S if i'm not mistaken

  • That was a great way of putting it :3

    but OMG spoilers >_<;;

  • i watced this movie a few years back, and i loved it! now i feel like watching it again! miyazaki's works always blow me away! XDDD

  • Princess Mononoke kicks the ass of ANY given pixar/disney film without even breaking a sweat...People always talk about how deep films like Up and WALL-E are, but I have never seen a film so directly and delicately tackled such a difficult subject...

  • @videogamenostalgia People that say UP or WALL-E is deep are superficial and to them, those are extremly deep. Princess Mononoke is way ahead for them to understand. The same goes for most of the japanese old animes. Hotaru No Haka also is one of them.

  • @anarhy09 It's worrying that you can so easily split animation into two diametrically-opposing classes. It's further worrying that you can presume that one is somehow intrinsically better than the other.

Wall-E, for what it is, is magnificent. Princess Mononoke, for what it is, is likewise magnificent. Why you feel the need to ridicule those who enjoy both, I don't know.

But @TheNewYorkTimes, love the end of the review and the way you segue into that closing animation. Props for creativity.

  • @KajNrig Well i didn't ridicule those who enjoyed both, as a matter of fact, i enjoyed both as well. But i did say that i think Princess Mononoke is way ahead for them to understand, as it is more profound. Wall-E is alot better than UP and more difficult to understand... but they're both for kids so i guess you can't compare them to Mononoke. Anyways, from my point of view, as i have the same age as you, i found Princess Mononoke alot better.

  • @anarhy09 If they (Wall-E and Mononoke) are incomparable, as you say, then why compare them in the first place?

What I'm worried bout, though, isn't the fact that you compare the two. It's that you - and so many other anime fans - separate "Japanese animation" and "Western animation" into diametrically-opposing forces, and then hold one up as being superior to the other. Not only is this a very racially-influenced position to take, it also sets up a hierarchy that is completely unnecessary.

  • @KajNrig Well they are diametrically-opposing because they are drawn into completly different styles and they take different subjects. Western animation, especially american animation tends to have subjects that are simple to understand, and mostly are made for a childs mind. No offence, but if you find my statements of reality racially-influenced then i guess that your interpretation.

  • @anarhy09 Mononoke is a film greatly concerned with human expansion and how that affects their environment. Wall-E is a film greatly concerned with human expansion and how that affects their environment. How are those two, and how are "Japanese" and "Western" animation in general, diametrically opposed? By generalities?

For that matter, how can you say that these two have different styles of drawing when they have a shared history? One has affected the other and has been affected in return.

  • @KajNrig "For that matter, how can you say that these two have different styles of drawing when they have a shared history?" - Do you realize what you're asking me?

  • @anarhy09 Yes, I do. I'm asking you how so-called "anime" and "Western animation" are diametrically opposed in terms of their art style.

  • @KajNrig Do you want me to define the what anime and wester animation means? And then make you a comparison between them? For you they're both the same and you can't seem to understand why people say anime is better. Well please understand... that there are things at wich americans are not the best, despite of what you think. :)

  • @anarhy09 I can understand why they say that anime is better. I just want you to understand that they and you, by saying so, are strengthening this perception of a racial hierarchy.

Nowhere did I say that Americans are the best at anything. In fact, it's you who's creating this racial divide by saying that anime trumps Disney or Pixar. I'm simply arguing for a less skewed view.

...but yes, if you think it would help your argument, define what anime and Western animation means.

  • @KajNrig "Many commentators refer to anime as an art form. As a visual medium, it can emphasize visual styles. The styles can vary from artist to artist or from studio to studio. Some titles make extensive use of common stylization: FLCL, for example, has a reputation for wild, exaggerated stylization. Other titles use different methods: Only Yesterday or Jin-Roh take much more realistic approaches, featuring few stylistic exaggerations."
