@Moppy1988 They are not putting water directly on the oil. They are trying to cool the tank down to prevent the BLEVE from happening. Its a standard tactic used in the fire service. Now what you can call them stupid for is only using a single deck gun, should have been using at least three of four. The narrator in the video has no clue what he is talking about.

@Moppy1988 Liquids only burn on top of the tank not in it. By cooling the tank down it decreases the temp of the liquid inside the tank. By decreasing the temp it moves the liquid away from its ignition temp which means it will not burn. The same applys to any fire. You cool the burning product down and it goes out. Yes some of the water will turn to steam. By the way that steam that is supposedly making the fire worse is a lot cooler than the liquid in the tank.

@Moppy1988 Its called a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion). What happens is during the fire the liquid inside the tank is turning to a gas which increases the pressure inside the tank. The pressure is so great that it causes an explosion releasing all of the gas that instantly ignites and then goes back out. Its like lighting gasoline on a bonfire. You get one huge fireball then it goes out and the only thing left is a small amount of fire but lots of smoke.

@Moppy1988 We actually use steam to put out fires. We use a nozzle that creates a fog pattern also called a V pattern. The nozzle breaks up the water droplets to make them smaller which in turn causes them to turn to steam faster. The steam than expands in the air and displaces the oxygen in the air which causes the fire to go out. If done correctly you can put out a room on the second floor while attacking the fire on the first floor. Never even have to walk up the steps.
