Pavement played a small, outdoor show at Cliffhangers in Louisville back in 93. It began to rain and everyone crowded under the shelter the band was under. I sat on an amp about 3 feet from the drummer. They rocked out and I felt like I was part of the band lol.

If you want to find some truly amazing rock music that informed their sound, try any of these:

The Verlaines - Bird Dog, The Clean - Anthology (both NZ), The Fall - anything btwn 81 - 86), and (maybe you need to hit 30 for these) as much 60s / 70s psych, prog and folk as you can find.

In my day (mid 80's-early 90's), college radio became "alternative" and post-punk rock became "grunge" among other terms, and independent literally meant being independent-as opposed to a style of music.
