If you go on their website (See side of truck) and go on Case Studies page 2 they have a bit about it on there called London Array. The transformers weighs 130 tons
@mrhh2010 Actually they don’t need all the “power” to move it, they need the weight on driven wheels to guaranty they have ample traction (% adhesion of the given weight on driven wheels) to climb the hill they were going up just in case there was a rain shower which reduces the % adhesion, they certainly don’t need any ware near 1800hp+ unless they were planning to maintain a higher speed and all the trucks were above there CTE speed for the HP output vs. there mass vs. % adhesion
@mrhh2010 The only thing that’s “abnormal” about an “abnormal load” is the size and weight, the laws of “logic and physics” remain the same, if they didn’t then your bosses wouldn’t be able to workout route requirements and considerations like being able to restart movement on a hill, reductions in % adhesion thus tractive effort due to rain etc or how much of the ~700t works agenised you per degree of grade etc etc. ;)
@b101uk obviously you know more than me about the job seeing as im only a driver of these loads.
Why not apply to work for A.L.E im sure with your knowledge they would enjoy having you around
You really need to go and see 1 of these things being moved to really understand the ins and outs of it, Its more than figures and computer aided designs and stuff like that
ALE has this type of trailer with up to 32 axles. This one appears to have 14 axles on the front boggie. I couldn't count the rear. If it was ther same as the front, that would be 28 axles, 28x4 = 112 wheels for just the trailer.
The company name is "Abnormal Load Engineering"or ALE for short. They specialize in moving abnormal loads. It only needs to be oversize to be abnormal, not necessarily heavy
2x 14 axle spmt schueller, x2 powerpacks each @350bhp. that is an estimate on the transformer weighing 350t, trailer self weight 100t axle road/loading to about 16t per axle....(around 40% of this configurations capacity)
That frontmost truck in the assembly isn't a Faun now, iss it? We have one of those big bloody things here in Australia (it's the only one in the country) and it belongs to a company called Rex J. Andrews Engineered Transport.
The front truck is a Unipower (British Origin). Unipower were made up of ex-Scammell workers. The truck is a M series prototype tank transporter, which has been converted into a heavy duty ballast tractor. It has a 19 L Cummins 750 hp engine I think. The rest of the 8x8 M series are bridgelayers I think. So this is a unique truck.
we watched it leave tog hill layby where it had stayed overnight, then filmed going by petrol station in pennsylvania, then again on roundabout at tormaton roundabout. weak bridge on m4 between J18 & J19 is why it had to come off. looked well good lit up at night, good night out for the kids!!
Most likely weight restriction i would say perhaps grossing 400t mark wirth 1pulling 2pushing think ballast tractors at rear weight in at around 50 ton each
@adambannell I relize I am replying to a 2 year old comment but bugger it .It could be that somwere between 18 and 19 there was a bridge or mabe pipe work under the motorway that was may be thought to weak to take 700 +tons .

all the speculation from many ppl, well let me correct you all
Front tractor=== 42 tonnes unipower mh8875, 19ltr cummins straight 6 750bhp
Trailer ====14 axle nicolas with girder frame approx 200 tonnes
Transformer==== 350 tonnes
Rear 8x8 faun==== 48 tonnes cummins k19 600bhp
Last faun====koloss 6x6 42 tonnes V12 aircooled deutz 525bhp
Total weight approx 700 tonnes
Now you can see why it needs so much power to move it

You're correct. I had only noticed the pair of wheels on the outside of each axle. I'd missed the inside wheels.
