UNIONS WRECK COUNTRIES. make it yourself, don't make other people make it for you! it is insulting to see Richard Trumka standing on a podium named after John F Kennedy, who would be ashamed to see who his party supports.
@cameo9876 - The United Nations still sends in troops to push local people into doing what the UN (the USA, really) wants. They call it "peace keeping." The event I recounted not only could happen, it did happen. You're entitled to your doubts, but unless you were there, you really don't know anything about it. You're merely stating an opinion, and it's an unfounded one. The union that took over my old office was at least affiliated with AFL-CIO.
@GuinnevereB Affiliated - that's easily possible. But you went after the AFL-CIO for a function they don't perform. Not all unions are perfect. But broadly, they perform an essential function. Polls show most working people would belong to one if they could. I guess you are in the minority, and you are entitled to your opinion. If an employer was unfair to you, you might view a union as a good option.
@cameo9876 - FYI, I am a union supporter because I've seen the difference an organized workforce makes. I'm fully aware of how right-wing propaganda and corporate tricks have been cutting union membership down. But I'm also aware of how corruption within unions has helped union busting. All it takes is a few experiences like mine to convince most people that all unions are worthless, but I'm not that naive, and don't you be. Not everyone who tells you what you want to hear is your friend.
@cameo9876 - My memory of WHO may be fuzzy after all this time, but I remember vividly WHAT they did. Whoever they were, nominally or actually, they passed out cheap T-shirts with "The Rescue Team" and the AFL-CIO logo, and then they betrayed us.
But if "AFL-CIO is not a union and does not represent anyone," then what ARE they, and what DO they do? And what are their credentials to show they have workers' rights and concerns at heart, and not some hidden agenda that will prove injurious to us?
@GuinnevereB they are a labor federation. Like the United Nations is not a country, but it represents countries. The AFL-CIO does not go in and organize workplaces. So how could they come in and organize your workplace as you said they did? It couldn't happen.
(cont.) I am a firm believer in union solidarity, but only if all are included. The small-fry have to be as important as the largest shop in the union, or it's all worthless, just another version of the game the big shots on Wall Street and in Washington are playing.
I agree with what the speaker said, but thirty years ago I worked in an office with a small union that nevertheless worked hard for us. Then the AFL-CIO came in, calling themselves "The Rescue Team" and won a vote to supplant our old union. Suddenly dues were much higher, and NOTHING was grievable in my office anymore, no matter how justified. The "Rescue Team" had much bigger fish to fry, and we were small stuff. They only wanted our dues and numbers to help their bottom line. Different now?
Finally, a voice of sanity and reason cutting through the obfuscatory, bullshit-storm of commercial media in the US! We need to share this speech with as many people as possible. Please post links in any social media or email lists you participate in.
People aka teabaggers were against the average american, their neighbor their elderly their unemployed because of the socalled wallstreet and banks bullshit and prevented us all in recieving free health care!?!?! Does anyone think that its so purrfect how all of a sudden everything collapsed conviniently when they knew President Obama was a shoe in and the changes he wanted to make.
This struggle put on the middle class is on purpose... I know of people with degrees flipping a burger because there are no jobs... let me restate that there are jobs just jobs with shitty pay where u need 2 or 3 to make ends meet. Meanwhile they are still spending thousand on thousands on bullshit and clubs while we are all in turmoil. I mean for fucks sake the insurance companies actualy anounced that they found a loop hole for the latest healthcare bill so they dont have to insure us.
I think not... this is a blatent attempt for the rich to basicaly use our men women and children as meat sheilds as they extract oil for this war... watch tv for a few you see these millionairs billionairs still living large spending like there is no end in sight while reg. folks are struggling to put food on the table
There is a war out there the rich using the stupid and the ignorant against themselves... This a class war they are on purpose keeping us under their thumb this is no accident people are against the war how do we get troops we take jobs from the average american we claim financial collapse and take away their homes meanwhile the rich are with no ripple in their lives... coincidence?
I have an idea: why not get rid of the federal income tax? You'd allow Americans to choose how they spend their "extra" income instead of giving grants to corporations. I think the market should decide which companies survive during a recession. And if people spent their money locally, their communities would prosper & they wouldn't have to wait for a federal grant to save them.
@andruh99 Why does there need to be federal taxes? And why can't parents give their full estate to their children w/o the IRS getting a piece of it? Social services are a good thing, but I don't want the federal government to provide it. I think it's best if such services are provided by state governments and funded by sales taxes. I believe every citizen should have the right to decide how his/her income going to be spent. Besides, the income tax can't...
@MishuTaste ...fully fund existing entitlement programs. We have to borrow the money to pay for them! Do you want to live in a nation where 50% of your income is used to pay back government loans? The federal government needs to tighten its belt the way average Americans have to tighten their belts when they are in a financial crisis. If I financed a luxury car the day after I got laid off my job, you'd call me crazy. Well, take a good look at what our government does w/ limited funds.
@MishuTaste I see your differentiation between Fed and State funding.
But if the States were to take over all this that you suggest they should, wouldn't they then have to raise taxes to accommodate for loss of revenue form the Fed Gov?
@andruh99 Yes, they would. Or they could cut their spending. Without a federal income tax, it would be a lot easier for Americans to buy things locally. And their state governments would get a revenue increase from the sales taxes. I don't see a need for federal grants. The federal government can "create" jobs by getting out of the way and allowing people to spend their money as they please. Consumers & small businesses are the job creators.
Thanks Michael, if it weren't for you, I'd probably never seen this.
Mr. Trumka is a great speaker, to my surprise, and this was a great speech.
Years ago, many it seems, I was of the belief that it wasn't in the best interests of the corporations to create the "low wage, high consumption" society that he speaks of, but that was long before the US's trade deficit.
Hank Paulson lied about everything with tarp program. GDP growth with borrowed gov. spending? Polish president may have been murdered? no unemployment ext. No flood insurance program. china is a dictatorship that lies about banks off balance sheets . rating companies lie about bond aaa ratings. gas keeps going up and groceries up. The whole WAR is screwed up. college is to costly. and wonder why their are angry people out there
This well-fed and well-heeled fatcat lives way too high on the hog to hope to address the anger and the pain alluded to in his speech. Who can seriously expect any corporate and labor demagogue to address the real economic and social issues faced by the unemployed, uninsured and homeless? Demagogues are the real problem and hack speeches are not the solution.
@shellgamer Fair enough, but getting the message out to the people is an important function, and generally requires a figure of some prominence to reach a suitably large audience.
@andruh99 Trumka speaks only for rank and file union members or 'middle class' workers who as a rule never concern themselves with the problems faced by the vulnerable and needy elements of our society not until they get fleeced by Wall Street or by con-artists like Bernie Madoff. Then the bubble bursts. ..
@shellgamer what you say is not true. Without unions there is absolutely no hope for those who work without one. If there were no unions, then all wages would be very low, and hours of work very long. If not for unions there would have been no middle class.
@Elin48 The US labor force population is154 million, the number belonging to unions is 15 million. Who do labor fatcats like Trumka speak for? You can figure that one out for yourself.
@shellgamer the union which once represented 39% of the population, and now 7% so I'm not sure where you got your figures, but it does seem as if you hate unions, maybe because you are not in one. Since I do not know from where you are coming from it's difficult to have any real conversation about this subject.
Hate unions? That's the farthest thing from my mind. Hate political posturing, hack speeches, cheap rhetoric and hot air from two-bit demagogues? You bet.
Religion dwindling donations from members, dependency on corporate, and Last Will & Testaments. Thus Corps have influence. Elderly have influence. Nothing wrong with elderly, but they are easily manipulated by FEAR mongering.
Media places FEAR in Elderly, Elderly tell Church how to be.
I am 49. Elderly are great for consistensy, but society changes quickly.
Educating them and overcoming their FEAR will change political map and policy.
LOL! Trumka, the guy that didn't do shit about the VA mines when he lead the miner's union. These bourgeois unions are utter trash, we need some militant unions ready to expropriate the means of production.
This guy talks about true facts. I support him. We need to stand up NOW. Action not words. We have to rise against these people. The other way to take out the corporates is to have social democracy. Everythign we buy, everything we do is voting. Please vote for the good.
@loloioi Democracy is nothing more than mob rule. Without protecting the individual with the right of law (as we have in a republic) the majority can infringe on the individual's prosperity, property, and unalienable rights.
@Kapan60 If yourself take the right wing then i much rise against you because of the inhumanitarianism presented by the right wing officials. I am sick of how much these people lie. We go to war because of ****ing oil? Excuse me human lives are being risk kapan. If you are a parent, what do you think of your children being killed?EXPLAIN THAT FEELING TO ME. explain republic to me? Fall of the roman empire is a great example. Also, it's propaganda to think such of a way. you're too narrow minded
@loloioi I fail to see the difference between the "left" or "right" wing when those politicans vote for the same things. Obama is nothing more than another version of Bush after he went into office.
As for a republic, it is a goverment tasked with the responsibility for defending the individual's rights over the majority. The Roman Empire fell because it no longer functioned as a republic as the People failed to keep the goverment in check.
@Kapan60 I guess you are right but what i find is that the left and right are no longer existing any more. I find it that it has become all right winged politics in america. I would want a republic though but if you think about it, major corporations could come into complete control during this process?
I have debated HC facts and in the end it all boiled down to FEAR. They are scared they give handouts to a few it will cost them personally. When HC makes economic sense.
Today at my Church Group I asked "Is the path to GOD, ok to blindly hate?". I thought of the Sumarian on the road to Gallilea. Did Jesus ask him if he had a job or worthy of his Med Service or Transportation?
30 yrs greed means 2 incomes and work through retirement. Less time to volunteer. Our society is SCARED.
@ipwnorcs My daughter is 11 and I was raised, so I want her to learn those values and make her own choices.
Religion/power that hinders workers? That kind of rhetoric only closes the minds of Christian Conservatives, the bible has many examples that kind be used to steer the church back to the middle. Their donations and volunteers come from the people. 2 jobs to survive, work past retire, not time to volunteer.
@lewislwood A doctrine that believes all humans are the epitomy of evil and can only do good by the invisible hand of some sky spirit is a doctrine that is logically bankrupt and devoid of proof. Religion only fools people into believing that there will be a better life after their death, effectively remiving them from the exploitation that stares them in the face. The church will always be a reactionary fetter to oru human development.
@ipwnorcs This video is a political/economic discourse. I simply pointed out the monumental hurdles facing people on any reform. This is only one hurdle.
As far as religious perspective goes, I am christian and I ask myself "Heaven, what can it be?". I know Bush's Heavean is not one I desire, some women down the street has a different vision of Heaven than I. I am still pondering that question and most likely till the day I die. Enjoy...
@lewislwood scared and ignorant- but it's based on ignorance. knowledge is power- and when it comes to society, citizens need knowledge of HISTORY more than any other subject.
@tristramshandy3 I am not a religious zealout. I was raised and my daughter is 11 yrs old. I do find that Religion is used to justify many of the past 30 yrs actions. Christians sacrificed their values and aligned with Big Corps. They never realized the price.
Only way to reach Zealouts is in their own terms, otherwise they close you out and sing Chritian Hymns. Like we agree, knowledge is power, knowledge and understanding of the Christian Right is neccessary.
@lewislwood the Christian right is very easy to understand- they operate on fear and ignorance. Period. I've been watching them for many years. It's embarrassing.
@tristramshandy3 You made my day. A single tear has appeared in my eye. I loved FNC Hanity & Colms, and O-Reilly from 1998-2002. Their entire media stopped covering and started propaganda. My final decision was when it was uncovered that the Vice President demanded all TVs tuned to FNC only, government has no business in our News. I am so glad others are beginning to see it too.
The Interstate Traveler system of mag-lev trains in Michigan is a prime example of a fantastic 'green' industry to bring this nation back. We need to get Americans working again on a sustainable solid futuristic vision. Let's hope that they succeed in getting interested parties involved for this country's survival in the new world of less oil.
Mr. Trumka, we are at the crossroads in America. Capitalism doesn't work anymore because the principle responsibility of the corporation is to its shareholders and not the employees. The corporation singular focus is to get a product to market as efficient and cost effective as possible. You can't expect a corporation to exist in a capitalistic environment it just wont work. Perhaps the rules should be changed at the international level and not at the national level. We need a world summit.
I asked this question to a graduate economics student. What if a corporation was able to plant, harvest and deliver food without manual labor and it was totally computerized and mechanized throughout the food chain. It was so efficient that hundreds of millions of people would be out of work. What happens to the people? Do we pay them so they can buy the food; or do we starve them?
@pongman We just saw something like that recently, although not so extreme: car companies kept making cars but no one was buying cause no one had the money to do it.
Economy only works if the money flows and doesn't accumulate. 100 years ago the industrial and political leaders understood that. Today the rich think their purpose in life is to accumulate wealth.
@MishuTaste About fifteen years ago there was an article in Scientific American about exploring the planet Mars and this researcher from MIT felt that the best way to explore Mars or any planet was to send a hundred robots to do the exploration and not humans. His concept was to have varying robots that did one thing and have other robots do other jobs. It would be extremely efficient and cost effective. If one robot was to dig, another to analyze, and another to upright those that fell.
If a robot broke down then it wouldn't matter because there would be others to continue the exploration and research. The thought at the time was to have one or two robots that could do everything but as you see it would be inconceivable and extremely costly to repair a multi-tasking robot 55 million km away from Earth.
@pongman Actually right now the people directing the Corporations even work against shareholders, for they lead the corps. in a way that doesn't secure their continuity and existence. This means that due to insane but highly profitable short term practices the shareholders might lose everything.
This is bad especially for smaller shareholders that put their life economies in what they thought (and was supposed to be) a safe investment for the future.
@karlsantos Perhaps governments should run some of these corporations, if they get too big, so that people will have employment? Obviously if they did it should be managed well so that the books balance out and the corporation can sustain itself.
@pongman One of the problems I see with the current system is that capitalism only really works with healthy competition, and it is impossible to have real and healthy competition when companies are just a few huge corporations. Even without formal cartelization they will tend to preserve a bad status quo that works only for them and not for customers.

@shellgamer so tell me how has Mr Trumka given you these feelings, when he hasn't done this for me. Are you in a union shellgramer?

Please vote for the good.
loloioi 1 year ago 5
@loloioi Democracy is nothing more than mob rule. Without protecting the individual with the right of law (as we have in a republic) the majority can infringe on the individual's prosperity, property, and unalienable rights.
Kapan60 1 year ago 2
@Kapan60 If yourself take the right wing then i much rise against you because of the inhumanitarianism presented by the right wing officials. I am sick of how much these people lie. We go to war because of ****ing oil? Excuse me human lives are being risk kapan. If you are a parent, what do you think of your children being killed?EXPLAIN THAT FEELING TO ME. explain republic to me? Fall of the roman empire is a great example. Also, it's propaganda to think such of a way. you're too narrow minded
loloioi 1 year ago
@loloioi I fail to see the difference between the "left" or "right" wing when those politicans vote for the same things. Obama is nothing more than another version of Bush after he went into office.
As for a republic, it is a goverment tasked with the responsibility for defending the individual's rights over the majority. The Roman Empire fell because it no longer functioned as a republic as the People failed to keep the goverment in check.
Kapan60 1 year ago

Our society is SCARED.
lewislwood 1 year ago
@lewislwood That same fear leads you into the arms of religion. A powerful opiate that hinders workers.
ipwnorcs 1 year ago
@ipwnorcs My daughter is 11 and I was raised, so I want her to learn those values and make her own choices.
Religion/power that hinders workers? That kind of rhetoric only closes the minds of Christian Conservatives, the bible has many examples that kind be used to steer the church back to the middle. Their donations and volunteers come from the people. 2 jobs to survive, work past retire, not time to volunteer.
lewislwood 1 year ago

Enjoy...

@lewislwood scared and ignorant- but it's based on ignorance. knowledge is power- and when it comes to society, citizens need knowledge of HISTORY more than any other subject.
tristramshandy3 1 year ago
@tristramshandy3 I am not a religious zealout. I was raised and my daughter is 11 yrs old. I do find that Religion is used to justify many of the past 30 yrs actions. Christians sacrificed their values and aligned with Big Corps. They never realized the price.
Only way to reach Zealouts is in their own terms, otherwise they close you out and sing Chritian Hymns. Like we agree, knowledge is power, knowledge and understanding of the Christian Right is neccessary.
lewislwood 1 year ago
@lewislwood the Christian right is very easy to understand- they operate on fear and ignorance. Period. I've been watching them for many years. It's embarrassing.
Have a nice day.
tristramshandy3 1 year ago

We need a world summit.

pongman 1 year ago
I asked this question to a graduate economics student. What if a corporation was able to plant, harvest and deliver food without manual labor and it was totally computerized and mechanized throughout the food chain. It was so efficient that hundreds of millions of people would be out of work. What happens to the people? Do we pay them so they can buy the food; or do we starve them?
pongman 1 year ago
I believe this is what the future will be and we need to figure this out or we'll end up with massive chaos.
pongman 1 year ago
@pongman We just saw something like that recently, although not so extreme: car companies kept making cars but no one was buying cause no one had the money to do it.
Economy only works if the money flows and doesn't accumulate. 100 years ago the industrial and political leaders understood that. Today the rich think their purpose in life is to accumulate wealth.
karlsantos 1 year ago
@pongman You're assuming that they could only get jobs related to food production.
MishuTaste 1 year ago
@MishuTaste Well when you control the food does anything else matter?
pongman 1 year ago
@pongman Computer software matters.
MishuTaste 1 year ago
@MishuTaste Ok well that reaffirms my point. One computer software programmer can eliminate a hundred million jobs.
pongman 1 year ago
@pongman Well, the programmer can hire some people to build a luxury house for him/her and a maid to clean the house.
MishuTaste 1 year ago
@MishuTaste No you have to buy Bill Gates' house and that's it and completely furnished with robots.
pongman 1 year ago
@pongman But if the robots break down, then what?
MishuTaste 1 year ago
@MishuTaste We call the robots that fix the broken robots or throw them away like we do coal miners.
pongman 1 year ago
@pongman And if the superior robots break down, who will fix them if the owners don't know how to fix them?
MishuTaste 1 year ago
@MishuTaste About fifteen years ago there was an article in Scientific American about exploring the planet Mars and this researcher from MIT felt that the best way to explore Mars or any planet was to send a hundred robots to do the exploration and not humans. His concept was to have varying robots that did one thing and have other robots do other jobs. It would be extremely efficient and cost effective. If one robot was to dig, another to analyze, and another to upright those that fell.
pongman 1 year ago
If a robot broke down then it wouldn't matter because there would be others to continue the exploration and research. The thought at the time was to have one or two robots that could do everything but as you see it would be inconceivable and extremely costly to repair a multi-tasking robot 55 million km away from Earth.
pongman 1 year ago
@pongman Actually right now the people directing the Corporations even work against shareholders, for they lead the corps. in a way that doesn't secure their continuity and existence. This means that due to insane but highly profitable short term practices the shareholders might lose everything.
This is bad especially for smaller shareholders that put their life economies in what they thought (and was supposed to be) a safe investment for the future.
karlsantos 1 year ago 7
@karlsantos Perhaps governments should run some of these corporations, if they get too big, so that people will have employment? Obviously if they did it should be managed well so that the books balance out and the corporation can sustain itself.
pongman 1 year ago
@pongman One of the problems I see with the current system is that capitalism only really works with healthy competition, and it is impossible to have real and healthy competition when companies are just a few huge corporations. Even without formal cartelization they will tend to preserve a bad status quo that works only for them and not for customers.
