while I agree that people should be placed in office based on qualifications not political correctness, I think this whole EU thing is just one big symbol in itself, and does not have much power to actually govern Europe as a whole. There are many countries in Europe and they would not be willing to just give up their power to one body of government. So in this sense, a woman symbol is ok because that's all they are, a body of symbols
