  • Kenny Rogers was black till he was 13, and was known as "Junior Ice" (not to be confused with "Ice T", "Ice Baby", "Vanilla Ice", "Ice Tub" or "Ice Bucket") and then with some magical chemicals, he turned his skin white..

  • @MrShepardDog bleaching cream? cake soap if your a jamaican? *cartel joke*

  • LONG LIVE FUNKN SOUL! Thank God for Shaz and da Daps! Songs with guts. Ankle bustin moves to da grooves!

  • thats dope!

  • The song was actually written by a white Nashville songwriter, Mickey Newbury. Kenny Rogers was just one of many black soul singers that covered it....

  • @MrShepardDog

    ...isn't Kenny Rogers white?

  • @MrShepardDog Kenny Rogers is whiter than me. And I'm Caucasian. What are you talking about?:-D

  • The song actually came from the mind and pen of a white Nashville songwriter, Mickey Newbury.

  • guy at :10 is a badass.

  • @MoisheKapoyr WHO GIVES A SHIT???! WILL YOU GO TO GRAVE HAVING LIVED BETTER BECAUSE OF IT?

  • My faith in Black American music is restored, after years of rap, hip-hop and another crap music styles,. Thank you ! Thank you very much.

  • @Subiromba rap hip hop is not crap! they got their roots in soul funk jazz! you got to check the music before you think its crap, check out the real stuff! old skool new skool, de la soul, a tribe called quest, biz markie, gang starr....all the east coast crews...and a music style has no color, a lot of white & brown (red/yellow) people got soul and swing too...one love! peace!

  • @ mepaul49 The original is actually by Kenny Rogers

  • FUNKY, FUNKY....COOL GOOD (ORIGINAL) BLACK MUSIC!

  • @TheArthuralves Lol, This is a Kenny Rogers cover. That's as black is it gets.

  • @LAYNESTALEYISAGOD

It's actually a cover of Bettye LaVette's version of the song that she recorded in 1968.

It's on youtube. Check it out.

  • those dancers are gettin down i love it

  • can't help but to feel good watching/listening to this

  • moe, id go with this one in 2nd place..still prefer kenny:):)

  • nice video :) like the variety they dance

  • Love Sharon Jones! Shame the video quality isn't so good, but still amazing.

  • Written by Mickey Newbury about the dangers and effects of LSD.

Jerry Lee Lewis was the first person to record it (1967) but he rejected it,

The First Edition with Kenny Rogers then recorded it in 1968 and had a top ten hit,

Love the Supergrass version live on TFI friday too.

    All excellent versions!!!

  • was this version released on vinyl?

  • @alans1967

yep. as a 7" single originally available only at live shows. you can pick them up now on discogs or ebay no worries.

  • I had NO Idea that there was a soul version of this Psychedelic song. Very Cool ....Thank you for posting it....

  • I'm really starting to get into Sharon Jones & The Dap-KIngs. And I LOVE this groovy video. :)

  • LMAO at "The Gallop" at 1:10. My mom said that dance was IT back in the day. And why did the dude feel comfortable doing the dance at 1:19....really? I remember my uncles used to tie their shirts at the midriff. The 70's were a mugga-fugga, fo sho!

  • haha yes big up to the soul train footage!! love sharon and the dap kings

  • how the funk can anyone thumbs down this?

  • Love Ms Jones!!!!!!!!

  • Oh my godness!!!

    Hype!!!

  • "inspired" by ten years after- 8 miles high

  • that's fantastic

  • She is the best thing we have had in real soul music since I don't know when! And she is 54 yrs old! We "old" women ROCK!!!!!

  • @marycreeves wow, I didn't know she was 54! She looks/sounds like shes in her late 30's/early 40's. I hope her voice lasts til shes a hundred and we have good new music again for a long time.

  • Shee-it...... The only thing Kenny Rogers does better is collect royalty checks!

  • @hugeshows - I hope not. A guy named Newbury wrote it and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded it first. Kenny and the First Edition covered the song.

  • dose nothing but gold come form this band

  • Brings back good memories

  • SUPER DYNAMITE SOUL!!!

  • I used to love these dancers on TV when I was young... They're so hot and so creative.

  • Cool track, think kenny rodgers does a better job though

  • Just heard the new album "I learned the hard way" now I am hooked and getting the other three albums :)

  • ...nice version, i prefare Bettye Lavette's though.

  • Awesome Soul Train footage - so much better than the ego-boost videos of endless closeups you see so many singers making now.

  • Best.video.ever. It so matches the song. :D

  • Original song is 'The First Edition - Just Dropped In' - NIce cover though!!

  • Is that Soul Train?

  • Someone needs to do a video re-make of this one.

  • ok don' t insult me! cool!

  • hahahahaha calm down.

  • It's a cover.

  • I think "fuckmotherforfreetibet" is right. I looked up this group & it's 2006 this came out. Weird? I think whoever made this video just synced some old Soul Train footage to give it a 70's feel.

  • ok! i dont understood everything u said im french but thank u

  • a Mickey Newbury song...

  • Nyes! This makes my want to get up and dance! and thats sayin somethin for me

  • i miss soul train.....this is a great tune by kenny rogers and the first edition....but man.....what happened nowadays with everybody doin the same ol dance....these people can groove.....i wish dancin would come back....this is the ever so refreshing appeal of individualism without the hatred that for me...could only be found in the 1970's......man she belts this out.....wtg!....

  • One of many good tunes by Sharon Jones & Dap Kings....

  • 0:12 through 0:17 was very cool

  • I LOVE THIS!!!! AWESOME!!!

  • Definately has an authentic "Old School" Vibe- glad that torch is being carried by some fine talent!

  • Soul Train Line Dance...Haaaaaayyy!

  • I saw here preforme at the Waterfront Blues Festival here in portland oregon, and man it was like a blast to the past... i felt like i was in the 60's... she had the introduction like james brown and evorything.. so inspiring that she's carrying the torch!

  • OH MY GOOOOODY GOODNESS..... bigger than big!!!!!!!!!

  • CHECK OUT BETTYE LAVETTE'S VERSION!!!!!! that is where sharon got her arrangement from. both equally good!!

  • This is good stuff. Check out Menahan St. Band too, its a bunch of the dap kings and some other people who I should know but I dont.

Also, this is music from the 21st century, a lot of comments indicate that people think its from the 70's, but nope! Truly this is a golden age!

  • I have been collecting soul for the last 30 years and, I admit as soon as I heared this it said buy me now! sharon has one of the best girl soul voices I have heared. This will in years to become a classic, anyone who's into this style of music will love it to death!

  • grea postt

  • Better than Kenny? Now I adore SJ, but better than Kenny's psychedelic mind bender? They're both awesome!

  • Kenny was trippin', but this some funky shit.

  • Sharon does this better than Kenny Rogers did the original. Just dropping in.

  • God bless Mr & Mrs Jones for giving us Sharon & her Dap Kings bless you xx

  • Great vid from better days :)

    Thanks BluesG for sharing.

  • Absolute freaking top notch funk soul!! Lovin every little bit of it!!

  • Is the original version by Kenny Rogers?

Regardless, I love this version so much more.

  • Heck ya, and a great cover of it. I think.

  • Love this video. The fashions and dances are neat.

  • Its original SOUL TRAIN footage top stuff indeed.

  • Lyrics are great

  • Bettye Levette covered this song, in this style, first! Just so's you know!

  • What hasn't Bettye Levette done?

  • I was introduced to her a few years ago, she's great!

  • Her voice is probably my favorite in the whole "soul" category... although, Levette has done FAR MORE than just "soul"!

  • What cd is Betty's version on, if any?

  • Only in compilations. For example: "Daptone 7 Inch Singles Collection Vol. 2 (2008)" or "SoulShaker: Real Funk, Soul And Groovy Club Soundz From Today's Scene! Vol. 2 (2005)"

  • Top stuff

  • look at all the polyester.
