They "could publish anything" they wanted in Paris because it was in English and the censorship laws in France did not apply to languages the French could not read. In French, however, France has a LONG history of censorship, including Henry Miller (translated into French) as well as Baudelaire, Flaubert and of course our friend, le Marquis de Sade.....
