This is so typical! People are raving "This is really great", "Quite possibly your best video to date", "Sounds neat!"
...and I'm like "wut?" cuz I did not understand a thing!!! I'm not kidding you! I can hear the words but... MEH!!! I give up! I can only hope I had my mind tied up on something entirely else than your video.
But... WHY is it? I've heard this as explanation for why potsmoking renders schizophrenia: it's people crossing these types of boundaries. Going along an Alan Watts-ish view, they've returned to what they are - observers. It's the basis behind what I feel conflict about; I often feel trapped in a body that requires input, and that I can't just be, without that concern. "Chasing the Wild Pendulum" puts that this type of activity (physical reality) results from lack of spiritual responsibility.
Don't believe I've heard the phrase spiritual responsibility before, but I think of things more in terms of physiology, and conditioning. We don't end where our body ends. We evolved to interact with the environment. Just as the brain does not function without the body (we cannot create a functioning brain in a jar without also creating a pseudo-body), so a person without external stimulus will gradually become disorganized. possibly suffering irreversible damage.
I call the common human requirement for external stimuli; anthrosensual addiction.
Have you seen the movie Serenity? You're almost describing Miranda;
"The G-23 Paxilon Hydrochlorate that we added to the air processors. It was supposed to calm the population,... it works. The people here stopped fighting. And then they stopped everything else... There's 30 million people here, and they all just let themselves die. "
@premed2 "so a person without external stimulus will gradually become disorganized. possibly suffering irreversible damage."
Fuck... that's a perfect explanation for why things are rather shitty. That's what religion and statism do, and replace with indoctrination that ultimately reduces to just that: disorganized and suffering irreversible damage.
Awesome blend of science fiction and science reality. The experiments involving exposing the brain to electro magnetic fields that induce 'haunting' feelings interest me.
Portable TCS kits are one of the many devices DARPA is researching. Apple is anticipated to roll out iThink devices in time for Christmas 2012 if they can work out battery life issues.
@2bsirius - Goddamn it! Every time I come up with something intelligent to put in the comments of Rich's videos, some smart alec ALWAYS beats me to it. *frosty glare* =P
@premed2 - What she said. I believe this is one of those "brilliant" vids you were talking about. Faved.
@2bsirius Well "Sphere" the book, not the movie, is so bad its laughable.
I'm not sure though if many folks saw where I was going with this--not much feedback. The test subjects experienced the world (and themelves) as it really is. We are protected from their fate because no mater how much we may deny free will intelectually, we cannot reconcile our intellectual with our experiential worldviews. Their experiences caused a switch to irreversibly flip. Without the illusion they disapear...
Have you ever heard of dissociative reaction. As though your body is a shell and you have stepped out of it.The mind's way of defending itself.Been there done that.Have no control over it.don't like it...
You realize this is not just an E-meter? Its a neural neutralizer man! Its like variablast, only 150 thousand times more powerful, and it sings a whole lot better, but at ear shattering volume.
@premed2 You keep me hooked the Burroughs my friend....I drink more Ovaltine with a shot of Baileys.. when you post a good vid like this...:) --cheers--

Got it from "Chasing The Wild Pendulum".
"so a person without external stimulus will gradually become disorganized. possibly suffering irreversible damage."
Whoa. That's a cool thought.
SomethingSea1 1 year ago
@SomethingSea1 That's because becoming disorganized and possibly suffering irreversible damage is cool.

@DonQuixotedeKaw No I haven't, sounds interesting. Is it related the the Firefly TV series?
premed2 1 year ago
@premed2 Yes, and I just gave you the least important spoiler of the movie.
It's a very cerebral action sci-fi. Give it a watch.

This seems as if it must have come out of a Michael Crichton novel, if he'd written comedy that is.
