I was wondering about the 12v conversion though... Did you keep the 6v starter and just replace the solenoid. If so, would that work on a bigger 1500cc or 1600cc engine as well? Or if you did go with a 12v starter, did you have to mess with the flywheel and the bell housing?

I have a 59 Baja that I wired from end to end myself and I made it 12 volt. I got a 12 volt starter and solenoid and just bought a bushing that allowed the end of the 12 volt narrow shaft to ride correctly in the 6 volt wider housing on the trans axle. The adapter is only a couple bucks.

And yes you might have to grind some of the inside of some bell housings. Mine happened to fit fine.
