Hainanese is facing a language crisis just other smaller dialects in China. If Hainanese was popular, many people would want to learn Hainanese. But it is not popular. How many Hainanese children still embrace and speak Hainanese in Hainan today? Are young Hainanese shifting their language to Mandarin more?
Na ku ho, Hainam koi! Very good hainanese chicken! What a great find. Was searching Hainan Island and to my surprise I could see the sights and listen to the sounds of hainanese.Fantastic singing. Here's to an island that today
hosts Donald Trumps' Miss World -Competition and is regarded as Asia's Hawaii. When was the video made? I really love the song. Thankyou Hainan Chicken and keep rappin'....
most of the young generattion dont speak hainanese anymore. but, in my family we speak hainanese to each other since young. although im just 22 years old but we speak hainanese among cousins and grandparents. it is sad to hear my friend speak malay with her grandparents. im from malaysia. =)
efforts to perpetuate use of Hainanese dialect to prevent it becoming irrelevant or obsolete through complacency and lack of use. We take heed of the fact that we are entrusted with the responsibility and obligation to ensure younger generation be adequately equipped with knowledge and understanding on importance of our tradition and culture. Our ability to communicate with others in Hainanese dialect, whatever their age or social status, speak well of ourselves on value of our own upbringing.
Eley318, Bravo for your articulation on values and their significance on the fundamental dignity in upholding the importance to encourage usage and preservation of Hainanese dialect! Too often, we are oblivious to the rapid pace of an ever-changing and challenging landscape which has immense impact on civilization and its way of life, particularly the use of media communications. It is for said reason that awareness of such realization be acknowledged to correspondingly rekindle our renewed
@ted2924 Yes !These 2 languages Hainanese and Teochew is very similar in some case , and is mutualy understand in communication. Yes !Hainanese speaker and a Teochew speaker understand at least 50% of each other dialect? is true OK
the very soil we tread on are constantly tugging at my heart-strings and beckoning my return. To enlighten you on scope of Hainanese song, I appeal to Hainanese Chicken, who is its sole architect and proficient singer to provide you with a full version of said song. Without a doubt, the song brings back floods of happy memories on easy-going nature, obvious contentment of the country folks and their dry humour. Please understand it better to sing along in order to beget the optimum enjoyment.
to exchange greetings and information on identities of villages and townships of our belonging. In answer to b3f4school's query, yes, I am Hainanese and was born in Wenchang City, Hainan Province. Since my immigration to Australia after my years in Malaysia, I have had the privilege of revisiting the place of my birth with my parents and rekindled closer ties with some extended family members on six separate occasions. The nostalgic attractions and its magic, which are its people, places and
reasons to suggest that stringent measures and more frequent usages of the Hainanese dialect be applied for use at home during our interactions and communications with one another. It is no exaggeration to assert that there have been occasions when our faces would be lit up by pleasant and sudden surprises when we chanced to communicate with total strangers in the Hainanese dialect. Such an episode would, as expected, make us feel exceedingly proud of ourself, especially when we are able
cultures of alien natures, the usage of the Hainanese dialect would be less inclined, resulting in erosion of its essentiality by society, unless sustained efforts are being made to inculcate in our children on the importance of our social identity as individuals. By virtue of its population, the Hainanese would be deemed a minority in comparison to the various communal groups from mainland provinces which are immensely populous in density and overwhelming in their population. All the more
hold our culture and dialect in like-wise high esteem and respect. When one has to stoop so low as 88hunting did, to mock and ridicule his own identity on its importance and use of the mother-tongue, it would be likened to cutting his nose to spite his own face. Sadly, in doing so, would also precipitate and encourage others to also subject our own identity and dialect to unwelcome mockery and scorn. We acknowledge the reality that with progression of time and exposures to multitudinous
with his diabolical "dialect will soon disappear like a chicken waiting to be cooked for dinner," you had nonchalantly and with grace and humility rekindled spirit of patriotism towards own communal values with your alluring appeals for answers and understandings which have significant relevance. The manner and attitude of your posting reflects the obvious pride and attachment of your own roots in Hainan and consequently, it is hoped that other communal groups with diversified dialects will
B3f4school, your curiosity cum interest in seeking clarifications and better understandings of Hainanese song underscores your pride and allegiance towards Motherland -Hainan and it nonetheless comes like a fresh breeze and the hopes that others too would emulate your exemplary attitude to appropriately honour and dignify importance of our culture through our dialect. Contrary to the defeatist view held by 88hunting which purportedly portrays the Hainanese dialect dooming towards extinction
Hainanese is a beautiful dialect quite similar to Hokkien dialect in certain words and phrases. So to all hainan brothers and sisters around the world " Chia Yu. "
Trueglitter, what you said is very true. Since we Hainanese are a minority thats why it is not widely spoken. The most popular Chinese dialect spoken happens to be Cantonese as there are more Cantonese people
spread throughout South East Asia as well as the world. So what we Hainanese should do is to try to save our dialect by trying to teach
our ancestral roots in our Motherland - Hainan. More often than not, we are left with no options but to acknowledge with sadness and disappointments the reality that the modern descendants pay scant regards to values and virtues governing the qualities which would endear and make them wholesome by foolishly discarding those of our own through adoption and herd-aping the myriad cultures of a foreign nature which are completely alien to ours on the mere basis of peer influence and exposures.
with the acquired qualifications and experience in life, enhanced by an undeniable understanding of our family lineage and ability to converse in one's own dialect. Admittedly, for those who had settled overseas via immigrations and adoptions of host countries of choice, due diligence and strenuous efforts be made in ensuring that the Hainanese dialect would not be obliterated through sheer lack of its usage nor be disguided by dismal failures to acknowledge the significance and importance of
the importance in preserving understanding and usage of our Hainanese dialect amid a world rapidly encroached by pervasive intrusions of government controlled mainstream media propaganda, distincly devoid of nationality dialects, inevitably resulting in deprivation and erosion of understanding of our 'mother-tongue' through sheer non-existence of its representation. The social standing of one's own position in society is arguably acquainted with one's self-worth and righteous upbringing along
Assertion by 88hunting's comparison of fate of Hainanese dialect with forgone conclusion of a cooked chicken for dinner, explicitly betrays his stark hoplessness and misunderstanding of the value of our heritage and seemingly makes us believe his welcome of demise of the Hainanese dialect. To be rhetoric and poke fun at others' culture and dialect in said manner would be deemed blatantly insensitive and a total lack of decorum. It is oppropriate and opportune that Eley318 has duly highlighted
to importance of our culture and traditions from the national outpost island in the south. For sake of our own posterity, it is incumbent upon us to dutifully incalcate in our children the essential importance to be conversant in the Hainanese dialect, as they would hold themselves in high esteem amongst their peers from the various national communities whose knowledge and conversance in their respective dialects may sadly have been eroded to level of nonentity.
It is this sense of connectivity which makes us uniquely wholesome and enabling us in standing proud in the eyes of a prying society which inevitably tends to query and be suspicious of our ancestral birthright, particularly for those who have had immigrated and being assimiliated into host countries of choice. Convesant in own lingo as a Hainanese, tends to create positive impacts on people during interactions as it bespeaks volumes for oneself and his upbringing on significance and adherence
rhymes be digested in parts as we move along and connect them to whole sentence in bringing out our understanding of their lyrical portrayal. More often than not, it is the musical rhymes which compliment the hidden meanings of words in the sentence when the lyrics are sung along as in this case. For those of us like Hingjuck82, who reside overseas, understanding of our mother-tongue provides oneself the dignity and pride associated with our nationalistic sense of attachment to the Motherland.
Hingjuck82 and b314school, heartening to note your curiosity and query regarding authenticity of the Hainanese lyric song expressed and conveyed by singer. Without any doubt, whatsoever, it indeed is Hainanese through and through! Truly, the grade and manner in which song is sung and delivered would unambigiously be rated as excellent via the stirring emotions and great sense of feelings aptly expressed by rich-toned proficient singer. Simplest way to comprehend and grasp their meaning, the
b4 i say anything i just want to say that i am surprised that there's this many videos on Hainan Island on here. I moved to L.A when i was kid and just recently went back to visit and i had the time of my life..i wouldn't mind moving back honestly. i agree with b3f4school, i know Hainanese too and i can't understand what this guy is saying...? its not Hainanese i know that.
It is a Hainanese rap describing how the young men of Hainan Island spend their leisure hours. Is is meant to be comical. The men are thought to be fun loving. Best to listen to the song if you can turn to page 10 where the lyrics are recorded. It makes you feel like going back to where your roots are from.
It would serve us well to acknowledge with gratitude and humility that due to our parents' fortitude and far-sightedness, largely instrumental to our current wellbeing, our memory and love for them be dutifully honoured and enshrined in our hearts. It is said that the only certainty in life is death and payment of tax, and hence, in our life time, it would be prudent and befitting to instill in our younger generations the same invaluable virtues and family values wisely preached by our parents.
and humble surroundings, it is indicative that theirs is a world far apart, without the perks and blessings that an average in Australia would be endowed with, and yet, despite the obvious drawback, their life goes on with the infectious smiles on their faces. And many a time, we are reminded of the fact that we too might have been the very faces in the same crowd on video had our parents not taken the courageous plunge and suffered and sacrificed so much to brave a new world overseas for us!
We consider ourselves fortunate in having the opportunity to conceptualize on quality and excess in life styles of those residing in Australia compared to our faraway and lesser advantaged brethren in Hainan. Evidence on contrasting aspects could easily be gleaned from video aptly orchestrated by hainanesechicken, when viewers easily perceive men and women captured on video were slim and lean in body stature, with not an obese individual in sight! From outlook of their persona, general attire
It is hoped that hainanesechicken would, for benefits of all interested, kindly undertake to improvise and deliver another of his well- acclaimed song, as his grade and quality of delivery truly belongs to an exceptional class above the rest. Response and feedback from those who have had access to hainanesechicken's delivery were, as expected, tremendously encouraging and praise-rendering. Their acclaims served to reinforce the widely held perception that such a passion be valued and treasued.
It would be apt to note that however much some of us may have assimiliated with host countries of adoption by our required immigrations, we are by birth and at heart a true nationalistic Chinese national by design. We shoud not endeavour "to cut our nose to spite our face" by disclaiming attachments of our roots to our Motherland as, in doing so, would be likened to someone who is sadly oblivious to the significance of his own birth and deliberatly disavowing the very importance of motherhood.
proud to have trodden on its soil on which our ancestors and forefathers had lived their lifetime and which now yields nostalgic and fond memories of early hardships and sacrifices they had endured. Hainan province- China's tropical isle in the south - may not be as developed as the metropolitan areas up north, but it nonetheless enjoys specific place of monumental importance as a national strategic outpost amid looming cross-borders and international political uncertainties with its neighbours
Trueglitter, well articulated and explicitly defined by your emphasis that preservation and promotion of our culture and customs should be an endearing priority together with acknowledgement of the fact that much would be achieved through songs and music extolling national importance and beauty of our Motherland to rekindle "the spirit of nationalism in our hearts and fire in our bellies." Overseas hainanese nationals who have had the opportunities of revisiting Hainan would feel immensely
impacting the usage of our Hainanese dialect. Its indeed a pride and joy listening to the Hainanese song to accompaniment of conducive video depicting aspects of the inhabitants and venues, given that memories of days gone by are being stirringly rekindled with affectionate awakening. We are hoping against hope our appeal be answered by singer as the privilege of being accorded another song not only provide the immense pleasure of its enjoyment but also the pride of our Hainanese represenation.
melodious tone denote an unusual and exceptional quality that explicitly exudes a lingering and nostalgic ring to the authentic Hainanese prounuciation, thus further adding credence and endearing attraction to delightful listeners. Such well-admired vocal talent should not be laid to waste or allowed to suffer its own loss, as the passage of time coupled with ever-changing residential environments would inevitably pose a constant threat and erode the practices of our culture and customs, thereby
to enchant and enthral a lover, swooned by sheer exhilarating and mesmerizing magic of symphonies and rhythmic meanings. It is no exaggeration to suggest that another much-looked-forward-to Hainanese song by hainanesechicken would delightfully serve to adequately appease the growling appetite of all Hainanese on global scale, intent on their pursuit to satisfy their progressive hunger and clamour for more of such pleasurable treats. The richness and dimensional phonics of singer's voice and
In a world incessantly permeated by strife and haste, I earnestly support suggestion by johnnyf1ve in appealing to hainanesechicken to post more balmy and melodious Hainanese songs that would appropriately serve as potent and invaluable medicine in uplifting our down-trodden and sagging human spirit. The pages of history are literary adorned by glitters of inspiring beauty of songs with inherent capacity to arouse and incite a nation to rise to the threats and challenges of wars or additionally
The Olympics is like a game of chess. A "war" without intending to cause any real injury to its participants. Lets not wish problems - political or otherwise on this celebrated act of civilisation.
The visa constraints have put many businessmen and tourists in great difficulty in obtaining it. Sadly, what was meant to be a very happy gathering has become a much sombre and guarded atmosphere. Will this be a precedent for future olympics? I pray not. I hope people or even political leaders will not use the olympics to air their grievences. The olympics is such a great platform for the youth of various countries to gather, enjoy and to learn from each other the differences in culture
What has become of the olympics? Is it a worldwide gathering once every four years for the youth of the world to gather in one selected country to compete in various games in a friendly and happy atmosphere? Looks like this time in Beijing it is not so! Threats from various terrorists groups within China as well as internationally have caused a great security scare. Therefore Beijing has put 'Security' their top piority.
and green house emissions from haphazard and rapid industrializations are ominously looming with progressive imminence! Hence, closer understanding and constructive co-operations amongst nations would facilitate active participations to enhance binding cross-borders agreements in tackling environmental issues of global magnitude. Views and opinions expressed via internet would effectively constitute relevant feedback and concerns to respective governments for pro-active measures be implemented.
Olgasoo, welcome on board our journey together through cybersspace where "a thousand and one delights" await discovery. Our planet is indeed the most precious and pulsating beauty in the universe and preserving it requires mankind to rise in unison and work together for peace and not for wars to collectively protect its delicate and environmentally fragile nature. Even at peacetime assurances of harmonious co-existence between men and nature are never guaranteed when threats from global warming
Standing wayside I read with amazements and delights the many informative comments posted by various individuals. The urge to put thoughts in print got better of me, hence I too am on bandwagon to post a few lines. The world would be much bettter place if we are able to come together to promote goodwill and understanding and acknowledge that diversity in cultures and customs is strength not a threat. For civil society to thrive harmoniously, healthy relationships need be in place at all times.
Hainanesechicken,an excellent and thought-provoking posting-well done! Though articulation of your comments on the Olympics spirit is brief but to the point, it nonetheless denote wisdom of your analysis and pragmatic suggestion that the brotherhood of nations should partake in the competitions of sports to promote intenational goodwill and understanding to eradicate conflicts with one another. It is said "there is enough in the world for every man's need, but never enough for one man's greed."
and indefensible not to acknowledge blessing of the internet. Interactions via internet invariably accord us varied and various joys of fulfilment as wonders of words and meanings never fail to tickle the literary palate of even the most exacting and critical reader or bring tears to hard-hearted men by touching narratives on events and problems afflicted by sadness of occasions. Its usage enables us to perceive the world somewhat smaller than it is and to speedily act and react spontaneously.
The use of internet is specifically designed in its innovative form in order all will benefit from its usage. Admittedly, the downside drawback of being non-computer savvy would be akin to description of the pathetic frog in a well which erroneously believes the whole wide world to be merely the limited view from its shadowy depth. When nations are strenuously advancing improvements in their technologies and sciences in competitions to have an edge over others, its absolutely incomprehensible
docrun, acknowledged with immense appreciation and pleasures your greetings and response in reference to your posting. Your compliments were immensely encouraging and hopefully serve as invaluable impetus in drawing others to the platform to express their respective views and opinions. Constructive contributions from individuals alike your goodself will always create awakening awareness to evolving changes and challenges that have impacts on the political, social and economic aspects of nation.
Freakyflick, well said and well written, gosh your english is fantastic. Are you a writer? What you said so far is very true. The true meaning of olympic spirit is for the youth of the whole world to meet together and compete in a friendly manner. We as spectators should feel blessed to be able to enjoy the spectacular opening and the games of the olympics and NOT to criticise china for hosting it". "Chïa you China

Emergence of China as an imminent super power is becoming a growing reality, and its necessary to project its desired national image on its vibrancy and potential of its youths to international community. Hence, it is both befitting and necessary to portray a young beautiful girl with internal feelings and expression couple with a beautiful voice to effectively convey our national spirit. Contrary to the Chinese being demonised and accused of "faking" such

The Chinese should not be critcised for substituting a prettier girl to lip-synching to another girl's voice in the national interests of providing an excellent show on its global stage, as they both appropriately compliment each other in terms of its delivery and

In light of the grand and spectacular displays on such colossal scale by participants, it is most unbecoming and uncalled for when detractors deliberately chose to pinpoint on this particular issue, knowing full well that their ill-intentioned criticisms may bring disrepute and subject the Chinese's internationally acquired fame to dim light and diminished acclaims. Expressions of views and postings of comments over an issue of such colossal breadth and scope
Fair-minded observers are aghast and dismayed by counter-productive and undeserved discriminative criticisms hurled by narrow-minded critics at Chinese momentous organisation of the Beijing's Olympics, by targeting their decision in selecting Lin Miaoke to appear and sing in the voice of Yang Peiyi. It would be deemed an understatement to not register our utter disappointments at such negative comments blatantly highlighted by some shoddy reportage to maliciously condemn the Olympic child

The core impetus should dutifully rest on shoulders of our qualified nationals endowed with pioneering traits and hunger of acquiring knowledge and exposures from afar to revamp and turn the wheels of change in ensuring they propel the momentums of growths of our nation to greater heights of its achievements.
The accolades for China should be showered not only on its glory and success in hosting the Beijing Olympics but also acknowledgement of likelihood of its imminent emergence as potential major powerhouse and drive engine of global growths spanning nations far and wide. In light of our nation's monumental efforts to industrialise its vast resources to take centre stage and be effective world trade leader, multitudinous emphasis and great sacrifices be made to revolutionize industries to required

Its clearly evident spectators came away utterly convinced that our nation's invaluable asset lies in its human capital, effectively demonstrated during celebrations where thousands had vividly showcased their monumental potential.
At Beijing Olympics celebrations, the flows of moving music to accompaniment of pictorial images of our cultural heritage and history were often accompanied by the flows of our own tears, triggered by emotions of stirring sights and sounds which impacted our senses. The intensity of emotions thus heightened was consequential of the fact that as Chinese nationals,we have profound nationalistic pride and close attachments to roots of our motherland - China. Our Heartiest Congratlulations dear Motherland on your unique performance and long remembered & acclaimed delivery!
Celebrations of countdown leading to the opening of the Beijing Olympics containing approximately 91,000 spectactors may well be considered the greatest show on earth! Never before had there been a display on such mammoth magnitude and scope with innovative grandeurs and sophisticated computations to thrill and captivate a spellbound audience on remarkable world stage. Even the heavens rejoiced and were in total approval of the extraordinary efforts displayed by organisers and participants

It is said that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat its mistakes and in same vein we must never forget nation's past hardships and sacrifices during time of success, be it in the arenas of sport economy and politics
Chinese nationals worldwide are wrapped in rapturous jubilation at the hosting and commencement of Beijing Olympics held today 8 August 2008. We are proud as a nation and even prouder as its citizens in showcasing to international community that an event of such dynamic and nationalistic importance is being held in our motherland - China, widely acknowledged as world's fastest emerging economy. That we have the capacities and capabilities to harness ever-changing environmental elements however

Rekindling the wisdom of the Chinese proverb which aptly describes it "however tall a tree grows, its leaves will always fall at its roots" we should never lose sight of the fact that our own lineage roots from time of our forefathers are deeply entrenched in our motherland-Hainan. Though we have had wandered afar in our quests of better lives elsewhere, we should never be oblivious of the fact that Hainan will always be home and utmost deserving our much-awaited homecomings.
Placid lifestyle of its people captured on said video and beautifully complimented by singer explicitly denote core value and industrious nature of womenfolk. this song is written by a hainanese in hainan island using a popular mandarin song. i think it is a hainanese rap describing the idyllic life of hainanese young men of yesteryear.
when i first heard this song it brought sweet memories of our chia siang ( home ). for the love of hainanese songs, i'll be only too happy to send you a copy of my disk if you provide me your address. sing & be happy. you can do it.
yes certain words are similar to teochew and hokkien such as: eat food - cha piu; go out for a walk - hu kia koi; last night - ta mei wui; look - mour; have money - oo chee; go - hu etc.
this is a modern hainanese song; not opera type. you will enjoy more if you sing along as well. just refer to the lyrics on page 2. i am sure you can easily do it.
This is so good i'm posting this the 2nd time.i've already contacted Robert De Niro (he's eating at Nobu) and he'll contact the producer to contact Hainam Chicken to do a movie about the homecoming of a humble hainam back to his village to look for his long long lost love - his pet turtle.
This must be the academy award for 2008/2007. No hang on - I'm awarding it the academy award infinite ie. forever. Its the best of the best. Memories are best shared and not kept in the cupboard - just in case the house burns down.
It's good to go back to where your roots are. The earlier scenes in the video were taken in Wenchang city. Wenchang city has changed a lot now. Best to call your grandma again. Buy yourself some fire crackers. And a big tin of biscuits to share with the villagers. The normal custom is to pay respect to your ancestors and then light up the fire crackers. No doubt the whole village with come out to greet you with joy.
@_@ I haven't went back in 3 years now. =( I wanna go back and visit my Grandma. And and zomgosh. o.o I can never understand Haianese operas and songs. I'm still a noob XD.

Is the Danzhou dialect, a Cantonese dialect spoken in Hainan? It seems that some Hainanese are shifting their language to Cantonese more.

To those who have difficulty understanding the meaning of the song:
I understand all that he is saying.. its pure hainanese. You should write in and ask him for an english translation. I have done so and he has given it to me. So go for it! With the translation you will understand the song alot better..its very funny!:)

this song is written by a hainanese in hainan island using a popular mandarin song. i think it is a hainanese rap describing the idyllic life of hainanese young men of yesteryear.
when i first heard this song it brought sweet memories of our chia siang ( home ). for the love of hainanese songs, i'll be only too happy to send you a copy of my disk if you provide me your address. sing & be happy. you can do it.

may i noe where do ya get the song from?..interesting song..

yes certain words are similar to teochew and hokkien such as: eat food - cha piu; go out for a walk - hu kia koi; last night - ta mei wui; look - mour; have money - oo chee; go - hu etc.
this is a modern hainanese song; not opera type. you will enjoy more if you sing along as well. just refer to the lyrics on page 2. i am sure you can easily do it.

Nice voice and nice tune. I don't know about the lyrics, though. Who's the singer? His nickname is making me hungry.

This is a one of a kind journey into the heart of China. Best enjoyed by all the free people of the world. The singing is wonderful and the video is engaging. Lots of smiles to go around; telling of a China that continues to blossom. Thanks for the effort and God Bless China! VIC
