I remember as a kid this song use to bring me to tears and still do, i didn't know the wordings, I use to make up my own words. Thank you for Uploading this song. I truly LUV Barbra Streisand and Judy Collins.
Phenomenal song. The best line is the one that (I believe) was written specifically for her: "What a surprise? Who could foresee, I'd come to feel about you what you felt about me? Why only now when I see that you've drifted away? What a surprise? What a cliché?" I listen to this version back to back with Sinatra's version. That's how I have the versions ordered on my playlists.
@HellBlazerRaiser Indeed, the best things in life, are the simplest, an overflogged cliche that remains as permanent as night and day, what a song, what an incredible song and that line cuts deep like a crater inside the ocean
@thesousabone No kidding! Little "Pop-Tarts" that think they are so talented... they can't even give a decent performance without 50-60 dancers, almost no clothing, fireworks, sound effects, auto-tune and various other items to "Cover" their lack of true, God-given talent. While I do not personally care for Barbara Streisand's personality, nor her attitudes and views, I do know that she IS superior to almost every other female singer that EVER lived. Yes, she in her prime was that good!!!
@Lindawatcher HOW DARE YOU!!!!! LADY GAGA MY ASS!!!! This is art!!! this is maybe the only human instrument in life. no body can compare to her.... COME ON!! LADY GAGA??? LADYMALE GAGASHIT!!!
as I listened to this piped into an elevator today downtown, someone asked "Where has this song been?" I was startled at first, but I said "Why, it's everywhere. Show tunes drift off stages and out stage doors. They dance and prance and swirl around in the air, they dive into the fountains and dance with the water, spewing high and low as the water does it's act around the fountain. And they climb the trees too, they carress every leaf & make it glow with excitement, and flutter in the wind.
@hollywoody5000 Unless you lifted that from a playbill or the New York Times, your comment (gift for description) suggests that you should be writing or have just finished up the next great American novel.
Your description gave this video as much life as Barbra.

God do I love you sooooo much may God Bless every day with love and joy...thank you for making the hard days alittle more bright and crying with me.....
@underateduff22 I agree with you as no one can sing a song like Barbra. I was lucky enough to be in the audience when she sang this songe and I cried through the whole thing. There is one other singer who also does a beautiful job with this song. Look up Cleo Laine sometime and I think you will agree.
Babs is one of the very few singers who really know what music is all about. She fits so perfectly in her always fantastic arrangements. She always sings in a very musical way, never letting her ego getting in the way. She really wants to share the awesomeness and beauty of these songs instead of just showing off her grand talent. She sings WITH the orchestra, and not on top of it, killing it, like so many so called "divas". This is to say nothing of her incredible class. Love ya Babs!
Barbra Streisand is a rare commodity - a beautiful, soulful, heartfelt voice. I love everything she does. I adore this song a lot. Thank you so much for this post.
It is fantastic by "The Voice".. Understand at on time she could reach 8 octaves. I collect clowns that play this song and it is my favorite.. Fell in love with the song in the 70s when heard Sinatra sing it acapella... Great stuff.......jgeary@jgeary.com
I love this song, and specily whem someone like Barbra to do it, she is the best. So funny to hear about Catherine Zeta-Jones torture the song...very funny.
It's amazing that the two most poignant verses of this song NEVER get sung -- except here. They pull the whole meaning of the song together. Streisand is the best.
The great and unique Sondheim wrote this song for a character named Desiree, she and Frederik are the clowns: The fools. After she sings "Don't bother, they're here," Frederik apologizes to her and leaves the room.
A very moving and emotional song. My favourite version from Barbra Streisand.
Thanks a lot Dgray92237 for sharing the song on Toutube and with your kind permission I am adding it to my favorites :)
Barbra has the BEST vocal rendition of this and many other songs. I watched a video about the broadway singers of this, and couldn't believe how bad the voices were - had to come back here to listen to a beautiful one...
There has absolutely never been, in the history of the world, a more amazing voice!! I've loved Barbra since I was 8. Listening to her is better than a day at the spa. Though I don't agree with her politics, she has been blessed with such amazing talent! I'm so thankful I grew up during her "era"!!!
Just had to comment My favorate female vocalists,a truely great proformer, wondeful feeling in her voice, and with out doubt the most controlled (trained)female voice in my life time.Thank you Barbra for the hard work, and putting yourself into the music, and our lifes..You go funny girl...
@kateaintgreat Well, not necessarily. I think Loreena McKennitt can give this song a good go. If you don't know her, look her up in the search box. But I DO love Barbara Streisand...she is a class act.
I always adore you Barbara!!!, this song always be my best favorate, it beautifully and perfectly the way she sings, they is no words to describe, each time i hear she sings I'm tear!!! no one can beat her !!!
I think that Judy, Barbra and all who have covered this song lend their unique talents and personality to it, making it beautful in their own way...Judy's lovely soprano voice made it an instant classic and is by far the most recognizeable version...
Dad's beautiful Lady with the GRAND voice. May you still be able to here her beauty in the heavens where you are. I miss you and Love you Dearly Daddy. I wish you could still send in the clowns I mess the wkends of nothing but music.Loves and Hugs..
@absoftitanium No, you should do that..this is a clip from her One Voice concert done in her Malibu home Sept 6, 1986 then released on April 1987..i'm not saying the song came out during this time, as dhf174 said this song is from Broadway show by Sondheim in 1973..comprehension is essential to create an effective reaction..
This song is from "A Little Night Music" - the original was on Broadway in 1973 and a recent revival played last year with Catherine Zeta Jones and Angela Lansbury
One of the greatest singers ever! Barbra Streisand sings this song with so much emotion it brings tears to the eyes. Only great singers are capable of making you really feel the emotions they sing of. Such a beautiful, sad song.
I met Barbra in 1990 at a party and we had fun - seriously. This concert was in her backyard in Holmby Hills out on her land. Tickets were $2,500 for 2 and by invitation only. Robin Williams opened for her (by her request) and all of the biggest box office and movers and celebrities were in audience. She sent out a cassette tape to them personally inviting them for a 'night under the stars' in the wake of the chernobyl disaster. I wasn't there.
I remember reading something where Sondheim had said that Streisand had asked him for an additional verse for her to sing when performing this because the first half is so unlike the second due to what occurs in the dialogue she'd never perform. That addition is so valuable to a performance of this song and it was nice to hear it. It brought a lot to this version and as always, Barbra is awesome and knowing she needed that addition just makes it that much more so.
one of her best performances: not one word is not conveying a message, no passage is just sung. Every line means something, how she does this with so little movement is breathtaking AND every note is perfect.

I'd like to nominate this song as one of the BEST songs ever written.
Such lyrics!
This is my favourite version of it.
(and yes, it I very nice to see a list of posts without swearing and inane jibes! Thanks dgray.)

Beautiful rendition. Would have loved to have heard Whitney Houston sing this song in her vocal prime

Captivating, matchless...

Thanks very much for having posted this.

one of her best performances: not one word is not conveying a message, no passage is just sung. Every line means something, how she does this with so little movement is breathtaking AND every note is perfect.
Genius.
