I understand what you are saying, and I do actually partly agree that more should be done to ensure that animals don't suffer when farmed for produce (e.g. free-range over battery eggs), and stubbing out fags on a pig is of course totally unnecessary and wrong. However, humans are carnivores by nature, and it is only by free will that a handful decide against this. You wouldn't critisise a lion for killing and eating a deer would you?

I am a payed up member of "Compassion in world farming" that demand animals be treated ethically ( even though i consume no farm produce myself apart from cheese). They brought about the ban on battery hens, comes out next year i believe, respect the soil and all life that walk on it .

It takes 7 lbs of corn/soy to make a pound of pork
it takes 14 gallons of water to produce a pound of wheat but it takes 441 gallons to make a pound of meat (more than 1/2 of water in the US goes to livestock)

Y'see we're supposed to be compassionate. Animals not. It is proven - we know, that we don't need to eat meat to survive. So why all that cruelty & violence on animals? To satisfy our tastes? Pretty disgusting thought if you ask me...

Why is it okay for lions to tear through a gazelle, but we can't eat meat? Would you argue that we are "higher" than animals in a religious or spiritual sense, so shouldn't eat meat like animals? Well, the Bible, Qur'an, Torah etc. clearly has people eating meat in them.
Or maybe we're atheists? In that case, evolution proposes that it was the introduction of meat into the diet of early man that stimulated our brains to evolve, and thus become humans.

Every single culture throughout the entire history of mankind has eaten meat. There is not a single TRIBE even of humans who have never eaten meat. Are the aboriginals of Australia, to the eskimos of North America, to the Zulus of Africa - all immoral?

Every one of those behaviours you mentioned are undeniably considered deviant - they are clearly not the 'norm' of any society and never have been. Meanwhile, eating meat has never ever been considered deviant behaviour by any culture - it has always been, and still is, considered the norm.
My overall point is that the morality of eating meat is not so clearly defined as rape or murder, and shouldn't be seen so one-sidedly.

correct. I agree on your points. The meat industry has been the cause of many, many problems however. Its frequently misunderstood to be only about animal rights - the issues are far wider than that unfortauntely.

Morrisey is right, if i had guests over for dinner i certainly would not let them eat dead animals at my table. I prefer commited vegatarians to make more of an objection to animals being killed for food rather than some of the misguided comments ive read nearby, such as ska2808, you cant sit on the fence my friend, whose side are you on ?

Morrissey's a bastard. I'm a vegetarian myself, but he has no right to tell other people what they can and can't do, enforcing his own beliefs on others. It's ironic, because one of his arguments against eating meat is that we "shouldn't play God", yet that's what he's doing by taking away people's basic freedoms.

I am a vegetarian, but I don't impose my vegetarianism on others, as I don't think that's my right to do so. I know some vegetarians who won't even eat with people eating meat which is just absurd. I don't eat meat, but I also don't let vegetarianism intefere with my life to that extent.
And it's hardly a "profound ethical position", it's pretty straightforward. And those who give it a bad name are the ones who devote their life to complaining rather than just getting on with their own life.

I'm sorry, but if having a basic respect for other people's choices and not forcing my beliefs upon them makes me a bad example of a vegetarian, then I'm not sure I really care to be a "good example".

Your " beliefs" i feel need refining, you seem happy to be a vegatarian and leave it at that, while i would promote the benefits of the diet to a meater, tell them of the animals short and sad life they are condoning and eating, the animals had no choice but to die because someone chose to eat them. Respect people when they show respect for life.

Well you could say that about any omnivore in the animal kingdom, animals who eat other animals. But I don't think these animals particularly care.
I'm a vegetarian because I want to be. I have voiced my reasons for being one when asked about it, but other than that it's my own choice and I have no right to actively force it on anyone, just like I wouldn't want any belief forced on me, regardless of how important it is to them.
Meaters aren't all ignorant, some just don't care.
